My Dog Sounds Like He

How do you think we sound like to a dog?

Probably pretty similar to how people who speak a different language sound to us only more familiar. Studies have proven that many dogs have the ability to understand vocabulary and grammar at the level of a human toddler and that they are BETTER at reading human body language than even we are. Much of what we say is genuinely understood. For example, if I say "I need to take a shower" or "I need to go to the bathroom," my dog does nothing at all. If I say "let's go to the bathroom so I can take a shower" (because my dog can't be unsupervised for even a hot minute) he will get up, go to the door, and lead me to the bathroom. He understood the context of what I was saying, not just responding to the keywords "bathroom" or "shower."Of course, they are certainly not fluent in English. But like we can understand the gist of what others are saying by context clues, familiar sounding words/words that we've learned from the media and casual exposure to the language, and gestures, so can dogs which is pretty freaking cool if you ask me. My dog may not understand a word of me complaining about a crappy day but he understands I'm upset and insists on giving me a hug. Most dogs have a similar level of intelligemce. My doggo isn't particularly brilliant lol.

Why does my dog make a pig sound?

I have a shi-tzu puppy -- about 1 year old. A couple months back, she started making this noise that my son refers to as a "pig sound" It looks like she is tryiing to cough, sounds like a honk or snort, and sometimes will sneeze afterwards. she will do it several times a week for a couple weeks, and then we won't hear anything like that for another few weeks. She acts healthy and at regular checkups has been pronounced perfect. What causes this and is she in distress? Is there something to fix it?

My dog sounds like she has been crying ...?

Sounds like it might be allergies or a mild cold. When in doubt, consult a vet.

I used to have a dog who sneezed when she was happy. The happier she was, the more she sneezed, and she'd do it while her head was in your lap. So you had this big thick "happy tail" going on one end, while the other end was getting huge snot-rockets all over you. I loved her anyway. :-)

My dog has been coughing and makes the sound like a cat does when coughing up a hairball.?

Coughing, hacking or gagging in a dog could be a sign of kennel cough. If your dog has been around other dogs at any point lately, you need to get to the vet. Kennel cough is easy to treat with antibiotics, but the longer you wait, the worse it gets.

It could be something as benign as a "reverse sneeze." These are common in dogs, and could be due to allergies, (see link below).

There is also a (small) possibility that something could be stuck in your dog's throat. When you go to the vet, they will look down your dog's throat as well as listen to its lungs to decide what is wrong.

It is very doubtful that your dog has a hairball, as most dogs do not groom their fur and lick themselves like cats do.

Get to the vet. :)

My dog left ear sound like it has liquid in it, like maybe wax and it smells. what can i do i can't afford a ?

If he is your "only child" you will find a way to bring him in to the vet. You have an obligation and responsibility to provide vet care to him. You can cancel your internet for a couple of months...that should be more than enough to pay for the vet.

I also am on SSI but I'll tell you one thing - I NEVER refuse my dogs vet care!

ADD:
Thank you for the lovely email. There is NOTHING SMARTASS about the truth. If you love your dog like you say you do - THEN GET HIM TO THE VET or SURRENDER HIM to someone who can give him the care he needs! Being on SSI is NO EXCUSE for neglecting your responsibilities and your dog.

You might want to look into the legalities of refusing vet care....IT'S A CRIME and punishable with forcing to surrender him, fines and/or jail time!

**defines abuse (or cruelty) as purposefully depriving an animal of food, water, shelter, socialization, or veterinary care**

What causes my dog to make snort/choking sounds?

It sounded like she was choking and couldn't breath. She is walking very slow and will not eat or drink anything. I watched her for a while and she stretches her neck and it looks like she is struggling to swallow. Any idea what could have caused this?

My dog keeps making a noise that sounds like he's hacking a loogie?

It could be something he ate. Or he might be having heart or lung problems. you should take him to the vet.
