My Dogs Collar Stinks.

Dog has rash on neck and stinky odor?

Hi y'all my dog (Half German Shepard Half Rottweiler) has this really terrible rash under his neck around the collar area that also stinks really bad. The smell itself is hard to describe. It's this musty lingering smell that you can identify from several feet away. I gave him a bath 4 days ago and I put his collar on a little to early, his fur was still wet. The other day when I was playing with him I noticed the smell and thought that it was coming from his mouth and was his breath. So I gave him a dentistix hoping it would resolve the issue. Today while I was with him I noticed the smell had worsened. I also realized it wasn't coming from his mouth. I took his collar off and the smell became really strong. I checked around and noticed a red rash where his collar had been. I just finished giving him a warm shower and worked a good 30 minutes on the rash. He doesn't seem to be affected much by it. No sign of pain, but he has been licking the area. I'm taking him to the vet tomorrow but I was praying y'all could help me help my dog get some kind of relieve and possibly have some kind of answer for the smell. I'm praying that I didn't do this to my little guy by putting on the collar way to early. Thanks!

My dog has a bad smell coming from his neck, around his collar?

this is completely normal and has started from the collar its self. when your dog goes swimming or or goes into a liquid with his collar on, the collar will suck up the water and eventually rot and begin to smell. that is my explanation if it helps. : )

Dog collar really stinks?

Vinegar. Works like a charm. Soak it in a dilute of 2:1 vinegar to water, let it sit for as long as possible, then wash normally. It's how we always used to do it, and our dogs got into some pretty nasty stuff..

Does salt water ruin leather dog collars?

My two dogs love to go swimming in the sea, because of their breed type they love the water and they take any chance they get to jump in. They both have these lovely leather collars. I was wondering if the salt water will do harm to their collars (they're new so we don't know yet). If it does I can buy some new cheap nylon collars just for swimming. Thanks :)

Is taking off your dog's collar when he's inside a good idea?

If your question is whether your decision to take his collar off just before you lost him had any negative impact on your dog, or wether him having worn it at all times before that did, then please do not torture yourself with such worries. Taking the collar off can of course only add comfort, but wearing a well fitted, light nylon collar isn't more uncomfortable to a dog than wearing a wedding ring or a hairband for us; they really don't notice. As for whether in general a collar should be taken off or not, it really depends on the dog and living situation. Personally I would take the collar off whenever I am sure the dog is safe, and have him wear one if he's not reliable or is in an unknown place. In my case, my dogs generally don't wear collars at all. They don't wear them at home because the collars mess up their fur and I like that they are natural and unrestrained at home, and they don't wear them outside because they are very reliable and they often work in rough terrain, thorny bushes etc, and I don't want them getting stuck. Also we've noticed that ticks have a tendency to attach around the collar.BUT:Our senior Lad always wears a collar with our phone number because he's getting a bit senile and sometimes wanders off.New dogs or visiting dogs always wear collars with our phone numbers in case they get away from us and can't find their way backAs do our dogs when we travel, for the same reason.Again, don't worry about what you did with your previous dog; it really didn't matter to him. If anything, it was nice of you to let him be free and natural in his last days. As for any future dogs, do the same for them when you can, while making sure they wear collars with contacts in any situation where they might get away from you (and when in doubt, erring on the side of over-wearing is obviously better than them being found somewhere they shouldn't be without).

How long does a skunk smell last if your wash your dog?

So - our girl dog considers skunk stink to be Chanel #5, provided they don’t hit her right in the face. She comes back with a huge smile on her face like, isn’t this awesome, Mom? I smell a lot! As a consequence of this, and living quite rural, we deal with this frequently. First of all, this is not going away in 15 minutes.Immediate shower with soap? Nope. Completely ineffective. Tomato juice? Never tried it, it’s 4 miles to the first paved road, so you don’t just pop out for tomato juice in a crisis. Tecnu wash, which claims to have skunk stank mitigating properties? Nope. I mean, it takes the eye watering edge off, but the dog will be pretty whiffy for weeks.I’ve upvoted the other folks who’ve recommended Nature’s Miracle Skunk Off. That’s the only thing we’ve found that eliminates the horrible stink in a day or two timeframe, not weeks. It has a chemically floral scent that sends people who do not approve of non-natural products around the bend, but that wears off fairly quickly and you are left with a (largely) unstanked dog. I, personally, prefer a sort of air freshener scent to skunk any day, but others may choose differently for themselves and their dogs. Note: Skunk Off that’s been sitting around on a shelf for years does not seem to be as effective. I avoided it for years after using some ancient Skunk Off at a friend’s and that was a mistake.

Why does my bullmastiff stink so bad?

I have an 8 year old Bullmastiff, and he is pretty stinky too. He gets bathed but the folds in his face smell.

Do you walk your dog on a leash or let him out the back? The dog may be rolling in something if he is unattended.
Also, it may very well be the food. Try switching foods gradually and see if that changes at all. If the food is not agreeing with him, he may be secreting a smell through his coat.

Do others think your dog smell too? Or is it just you?

How can I clear a dog's stuffy nose?

Get some saline vials from the chemist. The injectable kind (think it’s 0.2, or .02%), OR the BABY nose drops (that is basically the same as the saline vials). Then put a couple of drops in the effected nostril, wait, then do the other. Repeat if necessary, do not exceed 5 drops in each nostril in one sitting of 15 mins.DON NOT USE HUMAN PRODUCTS! They’re poison! Your dog with foam at the mouth and it could be fatal.
