What is the medicine for a high ESR?

A high ESR, otherwise known as a high erythrocyte sedimentation rate, Or “SED rate”, is a sign that all is not well with the bodily systems. In the past, the test was very simple. Blood was put in a capillary tube, and the rate at which the red blood corpuscles settled, or sedimented, was noted, such that after one hour, the distance between the top of the red cells and the top of the plasma above can be measured. This is the erythrocyte sedimentation rate, measured in millimetres per hour. We can now measure plasma viscosity, or “PV“, directly. There is no specific medicine, as such, for a high ESR/plasma viscosity. This is because it is not a disease, but merely a marker for something being amiss in the system. In general, a moderately elevated PV, suggests inflammation or infection. An even greater elevation may be associated with a malignancy, and very high levels of plasma viscosity are often associated with auto immune diseases, previously called collagen diseases. Examples of such diseases are systemic lupus erythematosis and rheumatoid arthritis. The expression “collagen disease“ now generally refers to diseases of the collagen. or connective tissue. The “medicine“ for an elevated ESR, therefore, depends upon why it is elevated. If the problem is infection, it may settle on its own, along with the ESR. If it is a bacterial infection, it may require antibiotics, and clearly, if the problem is a malignancy or an auto immune condition, the appropriate treatment will be provided for that disease. A fall in the ESR may be used as one of the indices for successful treatment. As you can see, you have opened up a huge “can of worms” by what appears to be a very simple question! I sincerely hope that my oversimplified explanation assists you in finding the answers you are seeking.

ESR reading is 40mm. What does it mean? I am 23 y/o girl.

The test means that the cellular part of your blood will separate from the fluid (plasma) at a somewhat higher rate than average. That doesn’t tell you very much, does it?The ESR is a very nonspecific test; it tells us nothing in itself. The ESR is elevated in a number of diseases and can be used to help confirm a suspicion; it is not a primary test for anything.e.g. I see a 70 year old lady with a one sided headache; the temporal area is tender on examination; I get an ESR.If the ESR is 5 mm/hr it is unlikely (but not impossible) for her to have giant cell arteritis; if it is 70 mm/hr it is very likely to have giant cell arteritis. We are still talking about likely and there are no absolutes. I will present the evidence to the patient as part of my recommendation as to the need for an artery biopsy. Her choice while understanding that failure to treat the disease, if present, may lead to blindness. In your case, the real question is with regards to why the test was ordered in the first place; the physician is trying to verify or exclude a diagnosis and other factors weigh in.

What is the problem if I have an ESR of 25?

ESR is the Erythrocyte Sedimentation rate. It is a test that measures how quickly erythrocytes (red blood cells) settle at the bottom of a test tube that contains a blood sample. Normally, red blood cells settle relatively slowly.A faster-than-normal rate may indicate inflammation in the body.ESR is done to knowHow is the disease progressing? Is it deteriorating or getting better?ESR does not specifically diagnose any disease, but it can provide information about whether or not there is inflammation in your body.Normal Range of ESR blood test results :Men below the age of 50 must have an ESR rate under 15 mm/hr.Women below the age of 50 must have an ESR rate under 20 mm/hr.Men above the age of 50 must have an ESR under 20 mm/hr.Women above the age of 50 must have an ESR under 30 mm/hr.Newborns must have an ESR under 2 mm/hr.Children who are yet to achieve puberty must have an ESR between 2 to 13 mm/hr.If there is abnormal ESR results it may indicateSome common conditions include:-A disease in the kidneys,AnemiaLymphomaTemporal ArteritisOld age factorPregnancyMultiple myelomaWaldenstrom’s macroglobulinemiaA particular type of arthritisThyroid disease.Don't worry, if you have an ESR 25 that means you have some inflammation in your body if it becomes 100 it indicates some chronic inflammation. If it lowers it indicates you are recovering.

What are the consequences of having high ESR levels during pregnancy?

Elevated ESR is a physiologic sign of pregnancy but it depends on the rate. If it is much elevated and you have some other symptoms like fever, headache and fatigue, you should consult an OB-GYN because it may be due to another condition.

My mother's ESR is 34. Is it too high? What is the reason behind it? How to control it?

ESRNormal ESRFor adults (Westergren method):Men under 50 years old: less than 15 mm/hrMen over 50 years old: less than 20 mm/hrWomen under 50 years old: less than 20 mm/hrWomen over 50 years old: less than 30 mm/hrFor children (Westergren method):Newborn: 0 to 2 mm/hrNewborn to puberty: 3 to 13 mm/hrNote: mm/hr = millimeters per hourSo your mother’s ESR is highAn increased ESR rate may be due to:AnemiaCancers such as lymphoma or multiple myelomaKidney diseasePregnancyThyroid diseaseThe immune system helps protect the body against harmful substances. An autoimmune disorder is when the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys healthy body tissue. ESR is often higher than normal in people with an autoimmune disorder.Common autoimmune disorders include:LupusRheumatoid arthritis in adults or childrenVery high ESR levels occur with less common autoimmune disorders, including:Allergic vasculitisGiant cell arteritisHyperfibrinogenemia (increased fibrinogen levels in the blood)Macroglobulinemia - primaryNecrotizing vasculitisPolymyalgia rheumaticaAn increased ESR rate may be due to some infections, including:Body-wide (systemic) infectionBone infectionsInfection of the heart or heart valvesRheumatic feverSevere skin infections, such as erysipelasTuberculosisControl ESR levels by fixing the underlying condition .

What is the reason for a high-level ESR 40?

What is ESR ?Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate is test used to detect non specific inflammation in your body. The red blood cells are allowed to settle in a tube for one hour and the rate at which it will settle is called as ESR.Why is it used ?ESR is increased in conditions where there is inflammation. Our body counteracts inflammation by producing various proteins called as acute phase reactants like C- Reactive protein. There products will increase the rate of sedimentation of the RBC in the testing tube. What is the normal range ?Normal range ofMales < 22 mm/hrFemales <28/hrHow to interpret ESR ?ESR is not diagnostic of any disease in the body . It gives an information about inflammation in the body.It needs to be correlated entirely with clinical examination. Some Conditions which increase in the ESRArthritisAnemiaInfectionsAutoimmune disordersRheumatoid arthritisPolymyalgia rheumaticaGiant cell arteritisScenario 1: I have low ESR . Does that indicate any problem.Low ESR levels are to be correlated clinically. If there are no signs and symptoms of any disease , Low ESR is insignificant . However if there are any clinically important features,, testing for CRP levels will be helpful.Scenario 2: I had an ESR of 80mm/hr during my last visit to the doctor. Now it is 34mm/hr. What does this mean.Decrease in the ESR is indicative of the response to the medication which you are using. Even through ESR is not a diagnostic test. It can be used for monitoring the disease. Persistent rise in the ESR indicates unresponsiveness to the treatment and speak with your doctor regarding the change in medication.Physiological conditions like pregnancy usually has a high ESR. It is usually < 45 mm/hr in first trimester and < 77 during third trimester. However anemia needs to be ruled out.
