How can we open a corrupted external hard drive without formatting on Windows 7?

You can't. Once the drive becomes damaged or being corrupted, internal file system won't allows any type of read or write actions. Using recovery programs before formatting is recommended if you've saved something useful on it and don't want it to be fade away permanently. I'd recommend formatting only after recovering your precious files. Else, you might lose the entire stored content. Good luck!!

My computer recognizes my external hard drive, but won't read it. What can I do?

Try reading the Drive on a Different Computer. If you are still not able to access your Data...Download the Free Trial versions of:1. Easus Data Recovery Professional or2. Stellar Phoenix Data Recovery Professional. Both are Very Good Data Recovery Software. If you are able to recover your Data using the Trial Version(s), you may buy the Easus/Stellar Licence. Both are reasonably priced. Note:1. Recovery of Data from a large capacity Drive can take a lot of time (days). You will be required to power on your system and drive for many hours non-stop. So, you will need a reliable system and sufficient power backup.2. If you are using the Raw Recovery mode, to save your data in parts, breakup your recovery procedure in parts by specifying the Start and End Sectors.3. Do Not Save your Recovered Data on the same Drive from which you are recovering it.4. Do Not Add New Data or Defragment the Drive from which you are recovering the Data. You may also consider Ontrack Easy Recovery Professional for recovering your Data. It is an Excellent Software but is available on Annual Subscription basis.

My laptop crashed and the only way to turn it off was to hold the power button and when I go to turn it back on and select start windows normally it just gets stuck on the "starting windows" screen and won't do anything else. I called HP and they had me run a test and it said hard dis 1 fault.

How do I fix hard disks?

How is it broken?  If it's just corrupted, format and reinstall the OS.If anything else, I don't recommend fixing yourself.  If you must, here's a few best guess fixes based on symptoms.  I am not responsible for damage. If it makes a scratching sound, the drive heads may be out of alignment. Realign them.If it makes a wobbling sound, try adding a few drops lubricant to the motor. If it makes a clicking sound AND has a head parking feature, two possible fixes.  Either replace the rubber pad that the heads park on, or lubricate the hinges the heads are on.If it makes a clicking sound and is not  caused by parked heads, the platters are probably damaged.  Nothing you can do.If none of the above work, you're on your own.On some hard drive models, you may need to work in a deoxygenated environment.  On newer HGST/Hitachi drives, it is critically important to work in an environment of pure helium, with a gas mask and oxygen tank.

Why does my computer keep freezing up?

If your computer is freezing it is because you have errors in the Windows registry. Errors in the registry are the main cause of computer freezing and crashing. And unfortunately this is not something you can fix manually. You must use specialized software to do it for you.

What is that noise my computer keeps making?

I have a laptop computer that randomly starts making noises and messing up. The noise sounds like "da da da da click da da da click" over and over again. When this starts, my computer becomes EXTREMELY slow or simply won't work. I have discovered that pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL usually makes it stop. But this has started happening more and more often. Why does this happen and how can I fix it?
