Female betta acting odd after being treated for fungus...?

There are several possible causes for what you are seeing, but really I think you are completely correct when you mention a new product. I seriously doubt there would be an interaction between the two items, but the new one causes the water to be different, that's what it's intended to do. Is there something wrong with your fish you need to treat or were you thinking of using this to help prevent illness? If you have a sick fish with fungus I would suggest you use a stronger fungus medication to treat the problem. Many are available on the market and the one's from Mardel labs or API are good and very common.

EDIT: Yes, I would suggest you change more water to remove the remaining medication. If there was only one spot on the fish and it was in the right place for an egg spot, odds are good it was an egg spot. Fungus looks much, much "fuzzer" and larger than an egg spot.

Female Betta acting odd...please help?

II have a 20 gallon tank with a verity of tropical fish, One of them is a female Betta she gets along great with the other fish and usually keeps to herself. but reciently she has been acting strange. like swimming down to the very bottom and resting her stomach on the gravel for a bit and them swimming back to the top for air she does this over and over again. Stranger yet she will not leave my male blue ram alone! she swims along side him even touching him. sometimes she swims in front of him to cut him off and just hovers there in front of him at a silly tilted angle. My poor Ram is so annoyed he trys to hide from her, what is this strange behavior!?

What happens when you put a female betta with a male betta fish?

If you simply buy a male and female fish and drop them in the same tank, there's a good chance the male will kill the female.when people breed betta fish, they usually introduce the fish slowly by putting them in adjacent tanks (where they can see each other), or in the same tank but separated by a clear divider and watching their behavior for a few days. If things go well, the male will build a bubble nest for the eggs, at which point breeders will remove the divider. However, betta courtship is pretty aggressive and the females tend to get kind of banged up, then once it's over and all the eggs are in the bubble nest it's likely that the male will start attacking her, so they're not usually left in the same tank for any length of time.

Can a female betta die from being too full of eggs?

I am sorry for your loss.

I suppose a female could swim sideways from being so full of eggs, I've just never seen it with mine.

Swimming sideways is usually an indication of gill flukes or parasites that make the pectoral fin not work, causing swimming sideways. Or swimming sideways is an indication of swim bladder disorder. I'm thinking SBD is the culprit here because gill flukes don't cause death that fast, SBD does.

Female Bettas can die from being eggbound too. Eggbound: if she is unable to release or reabsorb the eggs.
I was able to save mine by fasting her until she expelled them. It took 7 days fasting before she started to expel the eggs. I mention this because when I Google "eggbound female betta" all the information out there is grim/death. So now I know it doesn't have to be fatal. But yes, she could have died from being eggbound.

If you plan on breeding again I Highly recommend letting them breed until she has released ALL the eggs. To only let her release some of the eggs can cause Eggbound. Just let them embrace until the last few times no eggs come out. Then remove her. If you don't want that many fry just use a very very clean spoon and scoop out some of the fertilized egg bubbles and feed them to your other fish or flush them.

How can you help a dying betta fish?

I’m so sorry to hear, if this is your fish. Is his or her death eminent at this time? If your Betta fish is dying and you've done all you can to turn things around to no avail, then comfort is all you can do. Take a glass bowl and fill it with his or her tank water, add a few drops of pure Clove Oil and put him or her to sleep when you feel it is time.[ Clove oil is used in medical procedures for larger fish to keep them alive, but very still and apparently unconscious or pain free. ]A few minutes, and a few more drops and he or she will be gone. I am sorry to the both of you and I wish you well.

How do you treat a Betta fish whose fins are falling off?

That depends what you mean by 'falling off.' Are they rotting or simply disappearing? Either way you need to find the root of the problem. Fin rot - blackened edges on the fins/tail. Obvious and steady deterioration. Caused by poor water quality. Get your aquarium water tested for ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates. Ammonia should be 0, nitrites 0, and nitrates under 40. If they're above that do a water change right away. Most tanks should have water changes at least once a week (heavily planted tanks can be an exception sometimes), multiple times a week for tanks under 5 gallons. To treat fin rot do daily water changes and dose with API Tetracycline, API Fungus Cure, API Triple Sulfa, OR API Erythromycin. You can also add AQUARIUM salt (not table salt or marine salt) with a dose of 1 tsp/gallon to prevent the rot from returning. Fin biting - some bettas bite off their own fins/tail. You will likely not see the actual biting happening, but notice the fins disappearing by chunks. There are many, many reasons for this. Most often it is related to stress. Evaluate your betta's tank environment: What is the water temperature? It should be between 78 and 82 degrees - bettas are tropical fish. Does your betta have plant cover and places to hide? Bettas are not open-water fish. In the wild they live in densely planted rice paddies. Without many silk or live plants to hide in they will become stressed. Are the water parameters where they should be? Are you doing enough water changes? Sometimes the reason for the biting is not something you can control (such as the betta's tail being too heavy and it trying to unburden itself) and in that case all you can do is keep the water clean and warm to avoid any risk of infection. Fin tearing - Usually thin shreds or hole/puncture marks in the fins and tail. Caused by a sharp object in the tank. Bettas have very delicate fins and because of that can't have plastic plants - only silk or live. Plastic will rip their fins. Check all caves/hides/rocks/driftwood/etc. for sharp spots. You can run a pair of pantyhose over the decorations to check - if the pantyhose snag it's too sharp for a betta! Good luck :)

Why is my betta fish turning white?

In my experience bettas "lose" color when stressed. If the area around (especially under) its mouth is grayish/white then it is caused from stress. Maybe the temperature is too low for him. You need a heater. If the temperature is around 78F it's ok. If the temp is not steady and drops/increases more than 4 degrees throughout the day it's totally not good for the fish and may be the reason for this. If the temperature is ok change food. The best food for bettas is Hikari betta bio-gold, I HIGHLY recommend it. Ever since i feed my bettas with that, their colors became twice as vivid. Go buy that or buy it online. Also feeding freeze-dried or frozen bloodworms twice a week helps with color. That's a very beautiful betta btw, it deserves a 5+ gallon tank (preferably 10) filtered and heated. A bigger tank is easier to maintain as it needs partial water changes 1 time weekly or bi-weekly. Also make sure to get silk plants and NOT plastic ones because plastic ones will tear his fins. (Live plants are always the best choice)

My female betta appears to be full of eggs. With no male, what happens?

Your female betta is matured, when plump of eggs, she is able to breed. But that doesn't mean you should breed your bettas. The white dot is the ovipostor, where eggs are developed.

She always had the white dot, it just wasn't visible or you never noticed.

She might drop her eggs, but I have kept bettas for many years, and have bred them. And I never saw a plump female ever drop her eggs. Also, betta females cannot get prego. The definition of prego is: able to bare a child, in this case fry.
