Harddrive not showing up in my computer?

Try this:

1) Open the start menu, right click on "Computer" and click manage.
2) On the right hand side click "Disk Management". If you can't see it make sure you have the "Storage" option expanded.
3) Locate your drive and right click on it. If the drive is color coded black (unallocated space) then right click and select new volume. Otherwise click "Change Drive Letter and Path"

If you're not using Windows 7 then it may be slightly different but i'm sure it should be similar if you're using any version of Windows. If you're using Linux or anything else then I don't know but I'm sure you can find a guide somewhere.

Hope this helps! =D

External hard-drive not showing up.?

My girlfriend's dad has a Western Digital External Hard drive, which I think is the 80gig version. He has used it quite a bunch, probably owned it over a year now, and has most of his media files stored on it.

Well, one day, it stops working.

Currently I have it plugged into my laptop, it uses the USB plug, and it is installing the drivers, as it shows in the task bar. Well, it has done this a few times now, and every time the drivers are installed (it says) but it never pops up the window that gives me the option to do anything. Also, it never shows up in My Computer.

If I right-click My Computer, then try and Manage it, the external drive isn't showing up in disk management either.

And as I finish typing this, the Vista balloon just popped up in the bottom corner, telling me this device is ready to use. I also have the option to safely remove it down in the task bar, but still, the hard drive isn't showing up, neither in a pop-up or in My Computer.

Anything I am doing wrong? I have tried rebooting, looked for USB drivers that need troubleshooting, tried My Computer>Manage.

I need some files off that hard drive, so help me out. ;D

What can I do if my external harddrive is not showing up?

How is your external hard drive formatted, NTFS as is usual for Windows?  If you know somebody with a Windows OS machine, connect the external hard disk to it and see if it's indeed a NTFS formatted external hard drive. If so then you need to reformat it to HFS+ (or FAT 32) using disk utility. The Mac OS can't detect, read or write  NTFS formatted disks, alternately you can buy Paragon NTFS for Mac OS X software which I've been using for the last years now.It seems there is an option in Mac OS - which is disabled in the default mode - with which one can read from and maybe write to a NTFS disk  see How to manually enable NTFS read and write in OS X.  Never knew of it so never used it these past years.

My external hard drive is not opening, but it is showing up in my computer. How can I open it?

well i know 2 methods:try this does it work as m quite sure that i might not need to tell the second solution cosidering normally this one always work: 1.go to command prompt2.Type the folowing:attrib drive_letter:*.* /d /s -h -r -s3.Replace the word ‘drive_letter’ with your drive. For Ex mine is G drive so it will have the command : attrib G:*.* /d /s -h -r -s4.Than you hard drive/pen drive will open and show a nameless folder. Open the nameless folder.5.You will see all files/folders originally in your hard drive/ pen drive inside that nameless folder.6.Please do reply to me if it work. Cuz second method works only if u tries this and your hard drive/ pen drive does not open still.

Portable hard drive not showing up in My Computer?

XP: Right click on MyComputer, then click on Manage. Locate the drive under Disk Management or Removable Storage. Right click on it, and (re)format it. If this still doesn't make it visible in MyComputer for you, I suspect you have a bad drive. Contact the manufacturer, or take it back and exchange it.

My external hard drive is not showing up in my computer. What should I do?

Well, a few months ago I faced the same problem as you are facing right now and although there can be many different reasons for your hard drive to not show up but the problem that I faced was the memory was unallocated. That was about the problem and here is what I did and I think it can help you but in doing so you will loose all of your data on your hard drive so try it on your own risk.1.Insert the hard drive to your pc2.open up the disk management by right clicking the my computer->manage.or you can type the command diskmgmt in your command prompt3.the management window will pop up4.then go to disk management and scroll down to see if any unallocated space is being shown on the management window, it should show your external hard drive separately, and if so then right click on it->create new partition->then just the standard procedure of creating a new drive->click finish. It should reallocate the memory and your hard drive should work.5.if you are having the same problem then may be this could help as it helped me.but its not a guarantee that this will work as your hard drive would be corrupt in the first place or it could have some internal hardware problem, in either case it won’t show up your hard drive on the disk management window. If that's the case then expect the above procedure not to work and do not experiment with it. and take your hard drive to the service center.may this procedure work for you!

Why is my external hard drive not showing up in my computer?

Answering to give another option of what MAY be the problem. As you stated the hard drive isn’t showing up in “my computer”, I’m taking this as you mean within the “folder” My Computer (or simply Computer for newer versions of Windows), it may need to be formatted and drive letter assigned. This is a problem I run into every blue moon and after about 15-minutes of fidgeting around I figure out this simple problem.Open the start-menu, and right-click on “My Computer” (or “Computer” for newer operating systems), then select “Manage”. Once the Computer Manager window opens, on the left side panel, expand “Storage” and you should see “Disk Management”, select it. Within the main window you should see all your drives on display: OS (C:), CD/DVD (D:), and so on. Look for a volume that defines your external hard drive but doesn’t have the parenthesis around a single letter. This is likely your new external hard drive.Right-click the volume, then select “Change Device Letter and Paths”. In the next window click “Add…”. And in the next window click the radio button for “Assign the following drive letter”, then in the drop-down to the right, select a letter for the drive. Once done, click OK and back in the main Computer Management window, the volume should now read “Volume_Name_here (F:)”, where “F” is the letter you’ve assigned to the hard drive. The external hard drive should now show up in My Computer (Computer).Again, not saying any of the existing answers wrong, but giving another potential answer due to the lack of details given.
