My Internet Randomly Goes Out

Why does my internet keep disconnecting randomly?

Not enough info.
Are you using wireless connection? If you are you might be having an issue with the reception, or ur wifi card / usb adapter. Depending on the settings of the modem you are connected to it your internet connection can be interrupted many times per day. Client lease time is a time alocated by the router to a client (your computer) for a specific period of time, after which your internet connection drops and your router hands you another (or in most cases the same) i.p. address. Sometimes this process can happen instantly without you noticing it, and sometimes it could take a few seconds, depending on the traffic on the router. That is just one instant on why your computer might loose internet connection. Like i said your info isn't verry specific.
Interferrence is another reason why you might be falling of the internet. If you have too many 2.4 GHZ appliances around the router opr your computer you might have that issue. Thins like wireless phones (not cell phones), or certain microwave ovens, etc. Another reaosn may be your ISP may be experiencing problems, and usually that requirs you calling them and finding out. Or your router could be going bad..... once again, not enough info to go on... :(

Why does my internet randomly cut out?

Hi Ray,

Are both your PC and Xbox connected wirelessly? If so I would say you're probably losing connection locally with your router for a short period of time. Online game anti-cheat software usually have hello intervals where they have to make sure you're still online or else they'll kick you from the server for example, so that could be it. Usually if there's nothing like that it'll just kick after awhile, but would usually wait like at least a minute; but of course this depends totally on the game. This is why you're still connected to Xbox Live, they haven't kicked you out because they don't care, there's a longer time-out period.

If you're connected to your router on wired and still having this problem your router or modem are almost definitely crashing or rebooting or something like that. If it was your ISP they would probably know by now, unless it is the wires in your house anyway.

Plug your desktop directly to the modem and see if the problem goes away, if it does it's the router. If it doesn't it's either the modem or something above it (ISP). I would check to see if any of the lights change on the modem. If there is still a problem at this point this is where you contact your ISP, don't do it until you check this because that's probably what they'll get you to do anyway.

If the problem is because of wireless I would recommend getting a powerline kit for non mobile devices that require a good connection but are too far away for Ethernet:

Hope this helps,

Internet goes out randomly?

I need to ask, but is your PS3 connected directly with a wire or is it connected wirelessly too? To me is just sounds like that splitting the signal is just too much. Some people don't know but makes perfect sense that wireless signals do not provide the same speed you should be getting when you are wired in.

Unless you have a very expensive/high quality router, you will loose about 20%-33% of your speed when connected wirelessly. So if you cable signal is already being split into 3 for phone, TV and internet. That is 1/3 normal power for internet. Then taking that 1/3 and reducing that by another 20-33% for just wireless signal.

Intermittent connections is a common problem and often caused by spliting 1 cable line to provide for 3 items. Solutions:

1. You can get an amplifier to put on the cable connection from the wall to the cable. You can either buy one yourself from or have a Charter technician come out (which will cost you money either way).

2. Pay more monthly for a higher internet speed. Obviously with a higher speed, you wont get interrupted anymore, but no matter what speed you are getting, you will always have a certain % of that wireless signal not up to par.

3. Depending on how many cable connections you have in the home, you may need to split up where all the devices are connected (eg. connect the TV to one of the cable outlets, get the phone/internet connected to another) Im sure your phone/internet modem is the same unit that runs both. If that is the only cable connection in the home, then you can do anything.

I hope this helps. I know 1 and 2 require money but 3 is your best option to not pay anything.

From your added responses: Are you saying that you reconnected your internet to another cable outlet to double your speed or you had already just doubled your speed through your provider?

Has this been ongoing since you had charter services? The only downfall to cable services, is that they can slow down due to traffic. More people in the area using the internet, the slower its going to go. I use to run into this with Comcast all the time. They finally fixed it after a month or so.

Why does my internet connection drop when it rains?

Depends on what kind of connection you have. If you have a wireless connection (unidirectional WiFi, proprietary wireless, satellite, etc.) then that may just not be avoidable. Atmospheric conditions like that will affect transmission strength. If it's wired (cable, DSL, etc.), it likely means there's wiring that's not watertight, and your provider would have to trace down where it is and seal that up.

Netgear WNA1100 disconnects from the internet randomly?

Have you tried moving where your Netgear WNA1100 is? It might be where it is located that is causing these problems. There might be something interrupting it's frequency from where it is located at. If your other devices are working then I do not believe it has anything to do with your router. Anyways, just try moving your WNA1100 to somewhere else and see if this problem persists. Hope this helps, best of luck.

DSL randomly cutting off?

Recently my internet has been doing wierd stuff, I'll go to load a page and it acts like it's not connected but when I refecsh it's fine.
I was thinking it could be the modem since we've had it about 2 years...we're supposed to be getting a service upgrade tommorrow and I don't think vrisus or spyware should be a problem since I have corprate software on here that updates and such... but anyway I figured there's always a possibility of stuff going wrong and this problem is really annoying.
