My Job Is A Bit Unique So What Should I Be Getting Paid

What are some unique, high-paying jobs that involve travel?

I spent ~3 years in Management Consulting, and in that time:Took 2 or more flights a week for ~50 weeks a year. At a minimum, spent time in two cities a week, sometimes three. The craziest week I had involved four cities in three different countries.Traveled throughout North America, Africa, Europe, and Asia for client work, including far-flung exotic countries most people have never heard of.Had quarterly training in cities around the country as well as abroad.Had some pretty unique itineraries e.g. once took a flight from Johannesburg, South Africa to Sint Maarten (in the Caribbean).Collected an absurd amount of airline, car rental and hotel points to last me multiple years of travels going forward.Yes you’re making less than your peers in finance, but for a first job out of college, it can be exhilarating and exciting. The job itself is obviously great training for a career, but specifically with regards to the travel opportunities there are very few jobs like it.Obviously all of this comes at an incredible cost. Yes it’s fancy to be by far the youngest person sitting in international business class….But you’re also the only one sitting on that plane building a financial model the entire time, landing and then going straight into a full work-day. Yes you are traveling to unique countries…but the client is paying quite a bit for your travel and expects results commensurate to that. Yes, you are probably staying in the nicest hotel in the nicest area of a fascinating city in some country…But you’re lucky if you get time to actually do anything in that city. It’s a stressful and demanding line of work; a couple years of doing this ages you a decade. You do eventually start to miss the stability of having a home life, which hits especially hard when you realize your social life is nonexistent after even just 12–18 months. Also, not all the travel is “sexy” - sometimes you might be staffed in the middle of nowhere in the Midwest, where the nearest healthy dining option is Chipotle. But that being said, Management Consulting is a good example of a “high-paying job that involves travel”!

Why are soldiers paid so little?

I'm a Private in the British Army and my pay is just over £18,000 and there are deductions for food and accomodation that are taken off that.

I got paid less during training but understand that. Alot of my friends are getting paid a good bit more for their jobs.

I know there are extra allowances if you are abroad but I think that given the job we do we should be getting paid better

Why do car mechanics get paid so little?

This isn't correct..."they do car work no one else wants to do"

It's more like a large majority of people don't have the knowledge required to do this job. Just read some of the questions and answers in this forum and you'll see what I mean.
But if a person has the knowledge and doesn't want to do the job, it's usually because the job sometimes can be a PITA because the engineers, who get paid plenty, design the cars with no thought about what the repairperson has to go through.

Other than that, you're correct, a good mechanic is worth a lot more, so is a teacher but people don't like paying for something they think is easy to do.

Should I quit my job?

Stay with your current job until you have another one lined up. Right now the economy is not the best. A lot of companies are down-sizing and it might be difficult for you to find another job quickly. It might take a little time, but you WILL find another job. I can relate to how you are feeling. I feel that way quite a bit with my job but I think about all of those others that don't have a job and thank my lucky stars. It's fine that you want to switch but don't be hasty.

Why do medical assistants get paid so little?

Because that was exactly the role the job was created for: someone to provide LOW cost medical assistance to the physician, so that is what MAs do and are paid for. They are unlicensed and generally have no liability. Next time, do more research on what you want to be: there is plenty of info out there about salaries, duties and working conditions. MAs are discussed here a lot as well.

If I quit a job after 6 hours of orientation, do they still have to pay me?

Yes, you are entitled to the pay for the six hours you spent in Orientation. Orientation is learning the job.

Because you mention there is a uniform to turn in, and six hours Orientation, I assume this company didn't just start. Therefore, I would assume they will be a reputable employer. They must pay you within 72 hours of your last employment. You should have no problem collecting your pay if they are reputable. If you have problems getting paid, contact your local labor board.

So my employer is paying me in cash?

This is my first job ever. I'm going to be working at a chinese restaurant as a hostess.
When I went to get my shirt and instructions this morning, she said that i'll be paid in cash for a bit (idk if she meant permanently or what) but it kind of made me a bit apprehensive.
what does this mean for me? and what should i do?
FYI--I don't know much about the legalities or anything involved...I'm just a teen with a first time job.
