My Kitten Is Sick I Need Help

My 10 week old kitten is sick. can anyone help?

I have a 10 week old kitten. She has been with me for 2 weeks. Up until now she has been extremely lively, mischievous, and alert. Her bowel movements have been normal, her food consumption has been good. Her favorite activity since she has been with me is to chase my 1 year old cat around the house incessantly . Today when I got home, I noticed that there was a very loose stool in her litterbox - it was not completely watery, but very loose and of a light color. Then, thirty minutes later, she began to cry and she vomited (a very small amount - maybe a teaspoon of clear liquid). Directly after she had another bowel movement, but this one was tinted red and had a gel-like consistency. She did not strain to pass it, but the stool itself was clearly abnormal. After this, she became lethargic for about 30 minutes and her eyes looked glazed. She has since done this two more times - each bowel movement has been of the same gel consistency and has had a red (possibly blood?) tint to it, and each time she has become lethargic directly after. She then snaps out of it and begins to play normally. She has been drinking water, and she ate about a tablespoon of soft kitten food, but she soon vomited that food up.

I am very scared for her, knowing that vomiting and diarrhea in kittens can be very serious. Does anyone have a suggestion for what this might be? Does anyone have advice as to what I can do. I can take her to the vet in the morning, but (and I know this is a brutal way to look at things) I sadly cannot afford an emergency vet visit tonight. I also cannot afford to have her stay at the vet's for very long (i.e. I can't afford for the vet to indefinitely put her on fluids and 'wait and see' while the vet bill goes through the roof). In addition, while I am very attached to my kitten, the thought of her making my other cat ill is absolutely out of the question. Can someone tell me what I should do tonight to make my kitten comfortable? or can anyone tell me their opinion on the seriousness of this issue? I need more than my own emotions here. I need outside input.

Please help with my sick kitten!!?

My first question is what are you feeding the kitten? Kittens need special kitten food. I would stop any canned food, give only water to drink, and feed a high quality dry kibble to see if that helps. Remember, the fastest way to start diarrhea in a cat or dog is to change its diet. You have to pick a food and stick with it.

I feed my cats Royal Canin dry cat food. A while back they came out with the Purina Challenge - pushing the Purina O.N.E. Well, you can only imagine ten large cats all with diarrhea. I followed the instructions about gradually switching them over, etc. They still got the runs from the Purina. Needless to say, we are back to Royal Canin.

There is also an over-the-counter thing they have at the store where we buy our cat food. It is called Pet Pectolin. It stops diarrhea and you give the dose according to the instructions on the bottle. I foster orphaned and abandoned kittens, and they usually go through a spell of diarrhea right after I get them. This is due to the change in diet from momma's milk to pet food. The Pet Pectolin works very well. Do not be tempted to try Immodium. Not only is it toxic to cats, but it is meant for a totally different purpose.

The over-the-counter wormer is good for round worms, which is the most common type of worm animals have. The only way to tell if your cat needs a more specific and prescribed by a vet wormer, is to have a fecal sample done. Getting rid of worms is usually a two step thing. You give one dose to get the adults that are in there, and the second gets the juveniles that are left before they are old enough to make more.

Antibiotics can set up a case of diarrhea in cats. It happens with people too. I would think that, perhaps, your kittens problem is more dietary than anything.

Please help! Is my kitten sick?

I foster cats and I have had to take a cat back to a vet or a different vet because their first guess was not right. I would switch your kitten to Purina one sensitive stomachs with either lamb and rice or turkey and rice, this will help them out a lot, don't feed to much wet food as this can cause the runs as too when the food is too rich in nutrients. You need to call up your vet and tell them that the eye isn't getting better. Now you told them about the perfume incident? if not this you may need to tell them again. Also what kind of medication did they give you for the runs?
was it metronidozole? if so this needs to stay in the fridge if not it will loose its value!
Get some Fortiflora powder pouches that go into the cats food daily, this helps out re-build the good bacteria in the cats digestive system. Other then this I would advice shopping around for a different vet.
keep up the medication and don't miss a dose but do call a tech at the vets and let them know about that eye. I am surprised they didn't give you a tiny tube of yellow'ish gel.

Best of luck!

you sound like a really sweet person I hope it all goes well and from a stranger to a stranger I am super proud of you for taking your pet to the vet :)

My kitten is sick?

It sounds like he might have a kitty cold, which isn't too bad.

Pay attention to the color of his mucus, if it gets thick and green or yellow, you need to call the vet. Also pay attention to his energy level, his appetite and his litter box - if he's acting sad or has no energy, if he's not hungry, or if he's not pooping/pissing, those all mean "take me to the vet now."

How can you tell if your Kitten is sick?

responding to How can you tell if your Kitten is sick? How old is the kitten? I am assuming it is one you got from someone so it is at least six to 12 weeks old.First the eyes and nose should be clear with no discharge. It should be eating with appetite and eliminating in it’s litter box. If it isn’t eliminating and is very young it will need you to take a soft, damp cloth and rub it across it’s genitalia/anus. If this makes the kitten eliminate, then the kitten is still to young to be away from it’s mom. You need to take it to a vet to have it checked out and get an approximate age and if you need to give the kitten some kind of Kitten Milk Replacement. The kitten’s skin should resist being pulled out from it’s back. This would mean that the kitten is hydrated. If the skin is flaccid it means the kitten is dehydrating and you need to get it to the vet soon. Note also that kittens need to be kept warmer that a cat. They do not have the ability to control their own temperature. And if the kitten is “listless” for long periods of time it is sick. Please note that a healthy kitten will go like hell on wheels for an hour or so playing then collapse and sleep. That is the nature of young animals.

I have a sick new born kitten. How do I take him to the vet safely?

Taking the whole litter (and the mother) to the vet would be a very good idea because this might be something the other kittens could catch. It would also avoid the problem of the kitten becoming very stressed and distressed during the trip or at the vet.Otherwise, as others have said, carefully wrapping him in a towel and putting him a basket is the best way to transport him. If possible, put the towel down where the mother and other kittens will lie on it (such as in the nest) for a short time. That way, the towel will smell reassuring and comfort the kitten a little. As for when he gets back, check with the vet to see if there are likely to be any problems (such as a treatment they’ve given making the kitten smell strange). If there’s no problem, then that towel that smells of the kitten’s mother and siblings will help by transfering some of the “family scent” back onto the kitten.Gently put the kitten down by the mother and watch carefully, just in case of a problem, which is unlikely. The kitten will probably be crying for his mum and this will help to stimulate her protective instinct. Cats with a litter of kittens will often take on the kittens of another cat that is too sick to feed them or is not with the kittens. As long as you’re careful with the kitten, the mother should be happy to have her kitten back safely.Again, I would recommend taking them all to the vet if you can, so that you don’t have to take another kitten to the vet the next day and another the day after that, and so on. Not only is it less stressful for the kitten, it’s less stressful for you.

Can Makeup make my cat and kitten sick?

I just moved and lately my two cats have been into everything. I had mistakenly broken a bottle of liquid foundation. My cats actually jumped into it and now it's all over them I tried washing it out but it's not coming off. But now they are licking the heck out of themselves. Does anyone know if they can get sick off of this?

How do I help this sick cat?

Never give human medication to animals without vet advice. Giving this poor kitten human allergy medicine won't help it will only cause more issues. You kitten very likely has cat flu.Which is for young kittens can be lifethreating. When your family chose to take on the responsible of pet ownership that means vet bills. It is against the law not to seek vet care for sick or injured pets. You parents need to either take him to vet, take him back to his breeder or sign him over to a no kill animal rescue so he can get the care he desperately needs. Sorry but people like your parents should have pets.Upper respiratory infections can be caused by anything from allergies to deadly diseases. Your cat really needs to see a vet. There's no way you can guess which of the hundreds of possibilities is the real cause and treat it yourself.DO. NOT. GIVE. YOUR. CAT. HUMAN. MEDICINE! Cats have different digestive systems than we do, and medicines that we can take all the time can kill a cat if given once. Don't try to guess what this is. Don't try to treat it yourself. Just be nice to the cat, feed her well, keep her warm, and don't stress her out with loud noises. If she continues to be sick, try to find someone who will take her to the vet.

HELP!!! My young Orphaned Kitten is Sick - Lethargic, Limping, & Eye Problem! Can't afford vet. Need advice!

Your kitten is ill - use a rectal thermometer and a little petroleum and take his temp - only inserting the thermometer a tiny bit into the rectum. I usually take the tail in one hand with the cat pointing toward my elbow and up against my side but if you have help it would be best to have someone hold the kitten gently. Be very very careful because if you insert too far you can puncture his bowels - a quarter inch is more than enough depending on the size of the kitten - temp should be normally about 101.5 or 102.5 but higher than that and you have a problem.

Your kitten may have distemper or many other possible problems - if he is ill, he will need antibiotics and will need the specific ones for whatever is wrong with him. I'm really sorry but about the only thing at that point you can do is get some help for him from a vet.

The limping is strange - it could indicate an injury to his back or his leg. It could have simply been a jump down or up that went wrong, someone stepped on him or bumped him or even if he has a fever, it could be affecting his motor skills. I'm sure you realize that when the third eyelid is exposed constantly it means there is a health problem so again, we're looking at a really sick little guy. I hope you can find it the help it needs - good luck!!
