My Knee Hurts When Doing The Split

Why do my knees hurt when i do the splits?

Because you do not stretch properly before hand.

Why does it hurt in my hip when working towards the splits?

Hmm. This is a tough one. I want to say that when stretching it is natural for things to hurt. But you said the sides of your hips hurt, which is leading me somewhere else. When doing a split correctly you should feel it in the front of the hip of the back leg (the hip flexor), and the back of the thigh of the front leg (hamstring). What you seem to be saying is that you're having pain in the side of your hip, not the front. When there's pain here you're actually doing the split a bit crooked, where the back knee/leg is not straight on the ground but instead facing sideways. A way to test this is in the picture below, if when you bend your back leg, it bends to the side and not in line with your body, your split is crooked. Here are two ways to fix this: 1 visualize your hips as headlights. Start on your back knee with the front leg outstretched and straight. Then slide down into a split trying to keep your hips both facing forward. Another method is shown in the below photo, but stead of another person, you can use a wall. Position yourself with your knee in the joint of the wall and the floor, your foot facing the ceiling, your front leg outstretched. Then slide into your split as far as you can go without letting the back foot slide down and become crooked. If your toes stop pointing towards the ceiling, you know you're going crooked. Stretch as far as you can with your hips straight, and train that split. It will be painful but hopefully in the front hip flexor and the hamstrings, plus your split will be all correct and it might even allow you to go further.

Hurt my leg badly doing the splits ! HELP!?

You must have been working on a tendon that wasn't ready to do what you wanted it to and was kind of locked up in a short mode and is what is still causing you the pain.
To release it and get you ready for doing splits the right way do this. You will need to be in shorts for this. Lay on your bed with legs pulled up and knees bent. Take your hand down to your hip and follow the muscle group around the front where it meets your body so you are working in the crease area to do this. As you get half way down your muscle you will feel the bump where the tendon is enclosed. Go into your leg to find a place to grab into to put pressure on that cord, it is a little hard to find a spot, but it is possible. Get that tendon between a finger and thumb and press hard and hold. Now relax your body, take a deep breath and exhale and don't tense up any part of your body including your arms, let your hand do the work. After 45 seconds, while holding on tighter, slowly lower your leg outward until it is flat on the bed. Release the pressure but hold your position for one minute. Any problems or questions let me know.

Is it normal if my legs hurt when I do the splits?

Of course it’s normal to have pains at first. You must stretch effectively in stages to get muscles, tendons and joints acclimated and warmed up. Then it’s practice, practice, practice. Please remember that not everyone is able to do a split, You will soon learn if you can go the distance. If the pain is too intense you must not force your body into it.

Are my knees supposed to hurt when I practice my middle split?

A little, but if its really painful you should try stretching other ways. Stretch your middle splits in different ways:
1. go down into them, then put your forearms on the gorun
2. Do them against a wall
3. Lie down put your legs on a wall and open them (gravity does the work)
4. Frog Stretch
5. Butterfly Stretch
6. Sit in your middle splits, reach towards each leg, then reach towards the front

See which ones of these hurts, and just do the ones that hurts more often :). Hope I helped

When you do the middle splits don't your knees need to face up?

Sounds like you're doing really well, keep it up!

Yes, your knees do need to face up and your feet should be turned out or else it puts unnecessary, harsh pressure on your knees which can cause severe injury.

Stretches for Middle Splits:
1. Lay flat on your back.
2. Bring both legs up at a 90-degree angle, so that from the side your body makes an L shape. Make sure they are turned out.
3. Spread your legs out to the sides as if you were doing a straddle in the air. Your body should make a T shape on the floor. Hold that position.
4. Flex your feet to feel the stretch even more.

1. Lunge sideways to the right and hold it. Turn to that direction and hold for two counts of 8.
2. Repeat with the left leg.
3. Go into a very low grande plie with your legs apart, in a wide second position.
4. Slowly lower into a straddle. When you get as far as you can go, support yourself with your elbows. Hold this position.
5. Lower your body the rest of the way so that you are lying belly-down on the floor. Your body should look something like a Y shape, with your legs as far as they can get to going into a middle split. Hold this position

Why does my knee have a sharp pain for a split second when I get up?

It could be the muscle/tendon for your kneecap that has shortened. That causes the kneecap to be pulled up and into your knee. That usually results in trouble doing steps but can also give pain when those first steps are taken because it has kind of tightened in that one spot but movement loosens it enough to get let you walk. Here is how you can release that muscle/tendon:
Kneecap: (Use a chair that has no cross members on it.)
While sitting start with your leg out in front of you extended out to a comfortable length. Wrap your hands around it so you leave a open working area. Place your thumbs about two inches behind your knee and press into the top middle of your leg hard and hold. Relax. After 30 seconds, slowly slide that leg back until it is pulled up under the chair as far as you can make it go. Then release the pressure but hold your leg there for one minute longer.
Be sure to keep a steady pressure during the entire time or it may not work, then try it again.

How do I keep my hips squared when I do the splits?

Don’t necesarily go all the way down into a split if your hips aren’t square. Go down as far as you can without turning your hips, and when they begin to, start your stretching from there. Once you have the split all the way down, check to see if your hips are square by seeing if:your pinkie toe on your back foot is on the flooryour belly button is facing forwardyour knees on either leg aren’t turned outIf not, go back up until they are.Best of luck!

Pain behind my knee while stretching for splits?

I had that same problem... do you have hyper extended knees? If you do, I would suggest lifting up in you knees not dumping weight into them. If you don't know what I mean, stand up in front of the mirror with shorts on or something (so you can see your knees) and make them as straight as the can go but relax them. next, try to "flex" your knees and you will see your knee caps sorta lift up. make sure you are warm and do your splits with the same technique when you were standing and see if the pain has gone away or have gotten better. if it hasn't I would suggest talking to your teacher or your doctor I hope that helps
