What is Mass memory in Mobile phones?

Phone memory: The main memory of your phone. This is where the most important stuff is. Avoid putting unimportant files in this memory, as it is usually low. Putting too much files in this memory usually slow down the performance of the phone.
Mass memory: The built in internal memory of the phone where files should be stored instead of the Phone memory. Some phones' Phone and Mass memory are combined into one. If by any chance that your phone has a Phone and a Mass memory, just put files in your Mass memory. Mass memories have larger memory for storage than the Phone memory. Apps are recommended to be installed in this memory.
Memory card: External and removable file storage card. Usually bought in stores. The most common memory card today is the micro SD memory card. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digi... Memory cards are usually for people who want to expand the memory of their phone more. It is also more secure as you can put a password in it, and hide it in case you do not want others to access it. This memory is also good for the installation of apps, but if you remove the card, the installed apps will disappear. Inserting it again will solve the problem.

Why does a 32GB internal memory mobile phone only get 23GB for user use? What about remaining 9GB? And for 16GB only 12Gb usable for user?

Well most of that 9 gigs is part of the system software which includes the operating system which takes up almost and around 4 gigs in latest smartphones including android as well as windows. This is the minimum storage space requirement nowadays with mobile phones. Then in contrast to features like gesture control, fingerprint recognition, voice automation, 4k display, proximity sensor, geo-tagging, video processing these require RAM memory that is known but the computational data also require ROM memory which is taken up in the system memory. So some phone manufacturers like samsung had developed a concept of multi-ROM in which the these partition of system memory is kept on the different ROM which is faster and expensive so is allocated for system usage and inaccessible by the user. This memory partition kept the performance of the phone up to the mark no matter how much space the user may fill up.What apple has done is provided the system memory on the same chip thus allowing users for more storage space but so as to not compromise performance they use a very sophisticated and faster file system the Apple File System( Apple File System - Wikipedia ). So it differs in phone to phone depending on the usage of the file system. Its one of the issues faced by the phone developers so as to manufacture a phone efficient enough to manage the performance with the limited resources. If you agree with the answer an upvote would be duly appreciated.

Why is Nokia behind Samsung in the best mobile phone race?

I'll rather answer you, "why Samsung is ahead of Nokia in any race" Here is what Samsung is capable of manufacturing of its own: Memories(RAM and ROM)Memory CardsDisk Drive (including SSDs)System on Chips (Samsung was the maker  of Apple's A series processor, powering iphone and ipads)Processors (they have ARM license)Displays (OLED & LCD) -- Even nokia use itSemiconductors (discreet and analog)Imaging devices(camera sensors)Telecommunication networking equipmentsLEDs (with Sumitomo LED Materials)Lithium-ion batteriesinfluence Gorilla Glass(Samsung has 7.4% of corning, the manufacturer of Gorilla Glass)and this list go on and on.Enough to make a mobile.Nokia(Pre aquisition) is capable of:Mobile AssemblyMapping or Navigaion (Navteq Acquisition)Telecommunication networking equipmentsThat's itCapital:Samsung Electronics alone has $327 billion in revenues as of last quarter, while Samsung group is a giant, which we cant compare to NokiaNokia had $18 billion  (pre acquisition to Microsoft); now: $15 billionMONEY ISSUES  making hard to sustain long.StrategyEasy acceptance to market changeNokia spent millions on developing Symbian to be iOS. (Both Nokia and Samsung were Symbian users back then)Samsung adopted Android quite well by launching Samsung Galaxy S (the first known iPhone killer, or the Android bringer), just on time.Imagine comparing Galaxy S to Nokia N8Frustrating users:Nokia initial devices (after first iPhone) were quite an harassment for users, like N97 only had 128MB of RAM, a resistive touch screen and a very low internal space, inspite of being a flagship.iPhone had pinch to zoom at that time, making it light years ahead. Nokia keep frustrating its user until N8, but by then it was too late..SORRY NOKIA

Which variant of Redmi note 4 should buy 4GB ram or 3GB ram? Is there any big difference in performance or speed?

I would definitely suggest you buy the 3gb ram for the lower cost.If you are a heavy multitasker, really heavy I suggest you go for the 4gb ram and play high graphics game. But if you will be using the phone for anything except a lot of games, you should buy the 3gb ram. There won't be much differences in speed and performance if you don't play games. But if you do play high graphics game on 3gb of ram and don't clear out your RAM regularly, you might experience a bit lag while playing .Thanks for the A2A :)

Why should you bring your smartphone on a backpacking trip? Why not?

I carry my phone. Reasons?1. I hate carrying physical copies of my bookings. Plus it's more environment friendly2. I come from an Indian family, which means my mother still bosses me around . So no matter where I am I have to update her on my status and safety daily (as part of our agreed terms & conditions, for my solo travels)3. My current point and shoot camera is not working. I am too lazy to get it repaired, given that my latest Samsung phone is a pretty good substitute for it4. I am a lost cause with directions. So I use it to take pics and remember the lanes along the way5. Google translate (my life saver at times )Now apart from above I rarely use my phone on my trips. Why ? I am addicted to my phone and I don't wish to spend my holidays staring down at it.Most of us are digital nomads. In a globalised world it's imperative to maintain balance. As part of solo travel it's a necessity to be aware of my surroundings. With a phone constantly in hand would be a foolish act on my part. Also, I don't want the cute guy at the bar to think I am busy :)
