My Parents Are So Religious That They Think Loans Are Evil So Theyre Making Me Go To Community

My parents are kicking me out because we disagree on religion - what should I do?

First of all, it's not as simple as it may seem. They are die-hard, right-wing, "Christian" conservatives - I am a moderate and a unitarian universalist. I don't see the world exactly how they do. I believe in a woman's right to choose, the right for same-sex couples to marry, and I especially don't believe an invisible man in the sky is making the sun shine today or that he alone decides who gets to be saved by one of his miracles or who dies because they didn't get one.

I just graduated high school this year, and throughout my high school years, we've never gotten along on religious or political terms because whenever I wish to ask them something or discuss something, they always try to drown me out with shouting and resort to personal ad hominem attacks simply because they don't agree with what I'm saying.

Around Christmastime last year, I was applying for colleges. Unfortunately, my parents said they would kick me out of the house and refuse to help assist with any of my tuition if I chose to go to a state school (which costs half the amount for the same quality) rather than a "Christian" school.

Knowing that I wouldn't be able to get anywhere in my future without having a place to stay, I reluctantly agreed and applied to several Christian colleges. When I decided on which one I disliked the least, I went on the day in April I was able to tour the college and my parents put down the $200 deposit to reserve my place.

Now it's mid-July and I skipped the day I was supposed to go sign up for classes in late-June and my parents are furious because now their $200 might be going to waste. Why? Because I'm not going to enslave myself to $28,000 per year in loans to a college that promotes something that I don't believe in when I could be truly chasing my dream at a college that is half the cost and tolerates all beliefs. It is my own parents fault for completely ignoring where I wanted to go to college and what I wanted to do with my future.

I can either go on July 16th (the last day to sign up for classes), or I can get kicked out and move in with my grandparents or other relatives in the city and work full-time in the fall and then begin attending a state school in the spring semester of next year.

Do my parents truly love me, or do they just have an agenda to push?

My friend said it's "lame" to go to community college - agree or not?

It depends to be honest. There are colleges around me that don't have a good reputation as far as their degrees. You want to have a college that has a partnership or something with a university so that when you transfer all your credits transfer with you as well. My SIL is up to her eyeballs in debt because of going to colleges which were cheaper, but then when she transferred then she couldn't take all the credits with her, so she basically lost years that she still has to pay for.

I applied for a local university to save money, and got in, and got financial aid. I avoided loans, and got my Bachelor's degree (I took a year to work right after HS and in the middle there) with $5000 debt, which is almost nothing. At University, there were professors who also taught at the local community college and THEY were the ones who spoke about the problems with the community colleges, and how the courses were basically dumbed down, and how they saw it for people who were not intelligent enough for university level to bring them up to speed... which basically meant someone would go to community college for 2 years, then University for 3-4 years, whereas I went to University for 4 years so it overall cost me less. As far as I know, we didn't do associate degrees at my University because they were pointless at the University level.

Is it lame? No. Go where you feel would best serve you. Get the degree that you feel is best for your situation. However, don't narrow your choices. Talk to financial aid advisers at the University, College, Community college... find out what they would recommend. See what sort of grants and scholarships you can apply for (for instance, my first year was entirely covered by a scholarship through a local millionaire couple who would pick 5 or so students who were usually not able to get a scholarship or grant or anything for some reason. Mine was I had waited too long to fill out my financial aid things, so most of the money was gone for the coming year. I had to maintain a 2.5GPA which is nothing, and I had to go to a religious class once a week, again nothing. They even covered books. You don't KNOW what is out there, and what aid may be waiting.) Avoid loans by all means, but don't believe for a second that you aren't going to be able to find grants, scholarships, etc.

If you were raised religious and became an atheist, in what ways did your family and community's treatment of you change?

Since I was born I was raised as Christian. I went to a religious (Catholic) school until I was 13 so I had to go to mass every week, religious classes and everything involved. My parents were not really interested in religion, most of all, they were following traditions, so beside school I didn’t receive very much of a religious education at home. On the other hand, when I stayed as a kid at my grandmother’s house, I was supposed to pray before going to bed, say thanks God for everything and go to mass.I think I never really believed in what I was doing, I was a kid and did what I was told to do. When I was 8 or 9 years old I started to make uncomfortable questions and by the age of 11 I knew I didn’t believe. I talked to my mother, who isn’t much of a believer neither and she asked me to pretend for two more years in my religious school. That way I wouldn’t have to start in a new one. When I was 14 and started high school, I decided not to be taught more religion and finished my relationship with Catholicism. It was not a big deal for my family, they didn’t really care. Only my grandmother thought that it was important and she even took a priest home to convince me to come back. Now, everybody knows about it and, in fact, if I think about my family, including cousins, most of them are atheist.

Why are Black people forgiving whites who kill them?

Seriously, why are these families forgiving these evil white supremacists who had no remorse for killing your families.

Seriously, what is wrong with Black folks these days. I don't care how Christian you are, you don't forgive the devil. It makes Blacks look even more weaker thinking they are going to solve the problem with praying, marching, and forgiving. That is the cowards way out, Blacks are going to have to preach the 2nd amendment the way these NRA white supremacists preach it like its a religion. These white supremacists are getting bold!! They are not only killing you on the streets, but its come to a point where they are coming into your house of worship and killing you.

Also, why are Black folks so accepting of weird @ss white people coming into their church? Jesus would never let the devil walk into his church, yet these people clearly let the devil Dylan Roof walk in. As a matter of fact, Jesus would kick out people he thought should not be in his church, and without remorse.

They should have kicked out Dylan Roof. That is what Jesus would have done.

Muslim mom ruining life to the point where I always am depressed?

Get another job, apply for scholarships and go to a community college if you don't get them.
If you want them to pay for your education, cell phone, etc.-- ESPECIALLY while living under their roof-- you have to follow their rules.
And show some respect, they've given you a great life and amazing opportunities. They could've stayed in Iran or gone back there after their studies, but they stayed here so you could have a better life.

Why Don't Feminists Fight for Muslim Women?

When's the last time you've seen a Feminists go on about how Muslim women are oppressed by a religion who believes women are inferior and can never been seen equal?
