My computer turns on by itself for some reason?

Hello,

It's a BIOS issue. If you are unfamiliar with the system BIOS, read a couple of the previous articles about changing BIOS settings and be sure to see the note below.

You typically enter BIOS by restarting your computer and immediately pressing the Delete key repeatedly until you enter the BIOS Utility Screen (usually in blue). The fix is fairly easy.

1. Once in BIOS, go to Power Options (refer to the owner's manual if you do not know where it is).

2. Scroll down to Wake On LAN and/or Wake On Ring and change them to Disable. This will prevent Scroll down to Wake on LAN and / or Wake on Ring and Change them to DISABLE
This will prevent the computer from being able to come out of its power down mode whenever the phone rings or if LAN activity occurs (ie: you have another computer in the house on a network and someone logs on to the network from there).

Press F10 and choose YES to save settings and exit. Your system restarts and the problem should be fixed.

This will not be a windows scheduled task because it cannot run if the PC is off.

Why does my PC keep turning off by itself?

Chances are its overheating and turns off when you are doing intensive cpu/gpu work like watching videos or streaming youtube or gaming etc, either this or the charger is not the correct one and you dont have enough amperages supplied when necessary. You need to place the laptop on a flat hard surface when operating it and not on your lap or bed where it prevents the cooling system from working. However, You also have to clean the fan and exhaust system to allow proper cooling and at least once a year perhaps more if you have pets and carpets and a lot of people or useage and cooking or smoking going on.Youtube offers videos on how to do this and new cpu heat sink paste may be a good idea to keep older laptops running smooth just only use a tiny amount of it and dont get the arctic silver paste on any components lest they could short out during operation.

Why does my computer turn on by itself?

My computer is a custom built cyber-power PC with a windows 8 OS. Recently, it has been turning itself on at random (Or so I believe) times during the day and at night while I sleep. However, when it turns itself on, the computer won't let me type or use the mouse and then I have to force it down and flip the switch in the back before I can turn it on properly.

I changed the BIOS settings so that it wouldn't wake up by other means (LAN, mouse, keyboard) and opened the task scheduler to make sure nothing was forcing it on. But neither of those would explain why it freezes when it starts itself.

Also, not sure if this would affect the problem in any way, but it didn't start having problems until I bought a Samsung 24'' monitor.

Any help would be appreciated.

Why does my iMac keep turning itself on?

Both those guys are wrong. You Mac doesn't have a virus. There are no MacOs X viruses out right now. It's also not a software or hardware problem. In the energy saver control panel, the power adapter settings, you can set the iMac to restart automatically after a power failure. If you have any glitches in your power, a quick on/off, that will cause the iMac to restart. Also check in the energy saver control panels, the "Schedule" section. You can set the iMac to turn itself on and/or off on different days of the week at different times. See if anything there is messed up. Also check your surge protector (I assume you have the iMac plugged into a power strip), sometimes they go bad. And one more thing, check the power cord, is it in all the way to the computer and where it's plugged in? I had one person who kept bumping her chair into the outlet where her computer was plugged in and it would turn on and off.

My PC turns on by itself sometimes from sleep mode. How can this be?

Could be one of various reasons. As the others have stated - sleep mode is very easy to come out of. If the same happens in hibernate mode or even after a full shut-down - then read further:If nothing is "wrong" then it might be a setting (possibly in BIOS) which turns the PC on if some "event" happens. E.g. a mouse move (bump the table), key/click (placed something on the keyboard), or "wake-on-lan" (if you've got a network/wifi and other devices try to communicate with your PC), or any number of other such things. It could even be due to a timer (as in start at this time each day). You'd need to find out what setting it is and then disable that.If something is "wrong" it could be other things too. E.g. a loose wire inside the box touching a jumper and completing the circuit for the turn-on switch. It could even be due to dips and peaks in power supply. Try ensuring all connections inside the box is firmly seated, all metal surfaces are kept well away from the motherboard, and get yourself a UPS to sort out power fluctuations. It might be a faulty component - in which case it would need replacement.

Why does my computer turn on by itself?

Several possibilities. First one that comes to mind is you have some sort of remote assistance software installed and enabled. The list is long, but some are: AMMYY, VNC, GoToMyPC, GoToAssist, TeamViewer, Chrome Remote Desktop, LogMeIn,... And Windows has Remote Desktop built in. My personal choices - I do this for a living - are TeamViewer, RDP, and Chrome Remote.Again, the list is long, this is just the first few that popped into my head. Some have good reputations, some (like AMMYY) have bad reputations that they don't deserve. But reputation doesn't matter much for this question, what matters is: do you have something like this installed, and how is it set up?Most remote access software can be configured to run a service or process at boot, that allows a remote person to log in and access the machine. If the laptop is sleeping or hibernating, the Network Adapter can be set to Wake On LAN. In fact, it's set that way by default on most machines. And remember, you need not have anything installed, Windows RDP can be setup to allow this without any additional software. Remote Desktop (RDP) Hacking 101: I can see your desktop from here!Obviously, if this is happening you need to put a stop to it. Look at all your programs, see if one of them is a remote access tool. Refer to the above article and make sure RDP is off, or set correctly to prevent this. If you can't figure it out, take it to a pro. Or just reinstall Windows, and then turn off RDP.This is not the only possible explanation, there are others that are probably less disturbing. As I said, it's just the first one that comes to mind, probably because I do this every day, helping my clients and accessing the servers I admin.
