If you are using the DISH Network DVR receiver, you will not be able to use the fast forward or rewind or pause. There are different levels and quality of support for CEC, it seems to be one of the worst implemented parts of the specification. I wouldn't be confident of anything working that was using CEC unless it came from the same manufacturer.

Yes, you can buy a Universal remote and consolidate all your current remotes into one. The Universal will come with a code book and instructions on how to program it. You will need to look up the codes for each individual piece of equipment (by component type and brand name) and try each code listed until you find the right one. Sometimes it's the first code listed and other times you may have to try a few before you find the right one. If the brand of one of your components isn't listed, then you can still program it into the Universal provided that you have the original remote. You will have to "teach" the Universal what each button is by pointing the 2 remotes at each other and pressing each button individually. The Universal will then "learn" what the commands of the other remote are. The instruction manual will go into more detail about this process, but it really isn't too difficult. Good luck!

The Blu-Ray player remote talks to the player through IR (infrared) signals. iPhones can't do IR remote directly. There are apps that work with external IR devices such as the Griffin Beacon by essentially turning Bluetooth signals into IR commands:But you didn't want more equipment. Your best bet without buying anything is to make use of one of your other remotes. Most Cable box remotes and many TV remotes are actually universal remotes and can control your Blu-Ray player. (If your TV or cable box is older it's possible that the remote does not have a built-in code for the player - for a cable remote this should be solvable as they are generally upgradable -- call your cable company -- but most TV remotes are not). If the above doesn't work your best option is to get a new universal remote.
