How can I make a transparent blur layer? So that anything that is behind it will be blured, like a blurry window. Is that even possible using Photoshop?

I did some research and to my knowledge it is not possible to create a single layer that acts like a blurry glass window. However, the best way to do this right now is to convert your existing layer(s) into smart objects.Right click on the layer you want to have blurred and select “convert to smart object”.Then you can add your blur effect to this layer and stay “non-destructive”. What does that mean? By double clicking this layer you can still edit everything, nothing is lost. You can even add type and other layers to it.As an example, let’s say you would like to alter an image the way shown below. I have already converted it to a smart object and added the blur:I want to add some more layers to this image, but they shall all stay underneath the blur. Just double click on it and a new window will open:Notice that this new window is called a .psb file, which live inside your main document. I will now demonstratively add some additional layers to it:You can do anything in this .psb file that you could do in a normal .psd photoshop file. You could even create more smart objects and nest multiple .psb files this way. I’ll keep this for now, save it and close the .psb file. Now this is what my main file looks like:Now that I’ve done my edits, I see that the blur is too intense for my taste. So I will reduce it and add some type on top:Now I’m ready to export. Or go back and refine my edits, with nothing lost in the process.Hope this helped :)Image Credit: Sunrise - Monument Valley - USA photo by Willian West (@willianwest) on Unsplash
