How soon before the wedding should I buy a dress?
6 MonthsYou'll need time to get on the books with the Alterations Dept. You'll also need an average of 4 fittings that are 2-3 weeks apart. Of course, you’re thinking that's only 3 months, but what the dress will require won’t be known until your first fitting. More extensive alterations or work on the dress such as re-beading will require much more time. Also, there are many brides who are still dieting during this time and that will need to be taken into account. There are also brides who are nervous eaters and actually gain weight due to stress. I had a bride who went from a size 8 to a size 12. That required ordering extra fabric from the dress manufacturer and putting in gussets. I had another bride who went from a size 8 to a size 14. We had to get her an entirely different dress. There wasn't enough seam allowance or room for gussets without changing the lines of the dress. The manufacturer of the original dress didn't have a larger size in their hanging stock, and they weren't due for a cut date in her size until after her wedding. Trying to start from scratch and not only find a dress, but include alterations in a 6 month time period is nightmarish, but we did it…though it's not recommended.

Did you order your wedding dress online?
I bought my dress of eBay for $143.00 and that's with shipping and handling. It's a knock off of a couture gown. Everything went very smoothly with the seller. I emailed the seller with my measurements, color that I wanted the dress and received it within a month. I understand not wanting to buy from a salon were they mark up the prices and can be some what pushy trying to get a sell. What I would suggest to you is to go to a bridal salon just to try on dresses so that you know what type of dress you would like. Make sure you have someone with you to run interference with the sales people who will try at any cost to sell you a gown. If your going to buy on eBay make sure that they're a reputable seller by checking how long they've been a seller and also there feedback score. Make sure you find out about there policies about returns or what happens if the gown gets lost in the mail. Because the gown will most likely be coming over sea like mine did make sure you have shipping insurance, though some sellers include it in the cost. I hope this helps some.
Will you rent the wedding dresses or buy?
I had my wedding dress custom made by my sister in law, so technically I rented it from her, because I don’t get to keep it, but I got a brand new, customly made and designed by her. The best part is it was free of charge!!! Hehe.If she didn’t make my dress, I would still rent it from a bridal. In Indonesia, usually the bride rent the pre-made one(they can alter the size), or rent the custom made one (so the designer makes a new one, you don't get to keep it but you can make it as you desire). Would most brides prefer to buy or rent a wedding dress? Why?
I think that most women do not have full information about all of their options.If I could not sew gowns and didn’t know others who could sew them, I might opt for a rental if I was young and on a modest budget or wanted a dress that could not be remade or easily sold. I don't believe in keeping a gown to try to force a future bride into it. Nevertheless, I have the knowledge and means to get what I like now. I'm also not a standard size, so looking for a previously loved dress on eBay or another site wouldn't work for me.A custom sewn gown fromviously a private designer or a specialty seamstress who is not a huge celebrity like Vera Wang can be done for less than a lot of the dresses one sees at bridal botiques. I would rather have gorgeous high quality silk in the exact style that I want and made to my exact measurements than a name brand “ready-to-wear” gown that is altered from a generic dress size to sort of fit me. No one sees the label/brand when the gown is being worn. I live in the Dallas metropolitan area where there are places with great selections of specialty fabrics available for custom bridal including dozens of shades from purest white to rich ivory, with or without beading.After the big day, a dress made of a natural fiber like silk can be dyed to another color and altered if desired for use as evening wear. There are fairly simple things that can take a strapless white wedding gown to a stunning evening gown with off the shoulder sleeves added or bodice and skirt changes. I would much rather spend $3000 for a custom silk or satin gown that I can wear for years after it is dyed and altered than to spend $1500 on a one use polyester gown with a cute name on the label. Of course gowns can be sewn for much less, and I have helped women who started early and wanted to learn enough to make most of the things for their weddings on a tight budget. There are so many places to buy or get dresses sewn relatively inexpensively where I live that I don't hear much about brides renting dresses.

save the $300.00 else where, your best bet is to go to a bridal shop and have a custom fitting!! It can cost MORE than the savings to have a dress altered by a pro! I know the dress I wanted was over $11,000.00 in the store, I found one online for a bit cheaper and had to pay close to $400.00 for alterations!! The panic involved was crazy! I actually got my finished dress less than 22 hours before my wedding! By the time I paid for shipping and the alterations and delivery of the dress(after it was altered they charged me to bring it to my home) I spent the same as if I would have bought it at the botique I first saw it!
