Why does the picture flicker when I change the TV display capability settings on my com cast basic HD box?

I have an Insignia advanced serious LCD HDTV 1080p 32 inch,120hz(HD capable) ns-l32x-10a and while the TV is on and the HD box is off I take the remote and press the menu button and a menu called pace menu come on the screen and I go to the TV display capability settings and say I select a display capability like 1080i and when I select that the picture on my TV flickers a little)
