Myopic Progressive Add Question .

Is it harmful to wear glasses that are not strong enogh for your myopia?

I am a rather low myope with a .-2.25 diopters strenghth required for twenty twenty. However, I've noticed that while my glasses are great for long distance vision, it makes my vision of nearby objects worse. I can read words more clearly w/out glasses than with them of my strengh. However, my dad also has myopia of -1.75 diopters and his old glasses were of only -1.00 diopters, and i wear those when I read, and the words are clearer, than my naked eye, but blurier when i wear my stronger lens of 2.25. Is this harmful, for my eyes and will my myopia become worse if i wear glasses that aren[t strong enough?

About presbyopia?

Sorry--your near vision will be affected by the presbyopia, and your far vision will still be heavily affected by the nearsightedness, This is why many people wear bifocals.

You can either buy bifocals to correct the problem (you'll have a + prescription in the lower part of the glasses and a - prescription in the far part of the glasses), or you can just get two different sets of glasses, one that you will use for reading, and the other which you will use for distances.

Adult onset myopia/nearsightedness?

am 24, just got my glasses for the first time last year, -0.75, near sighted. I thought near sightedness/myopia you are generally born with, or onset in childhood, not adulthood?

Also, last checkup with optometrist, prescription went from -0.75 to -1.50, why the bit jump in lenses?

Intelligent answers would be great, thank you

Will I get presbyopia if I already have myopia?

Presbyopia and myopia are unrelated in a pathological sense, with presbyopia being an age related problem. So yes, just as people with myopia will surely get older, they will also surely get presbyopia.Myopia means that without glasses, near is clear, far is blurred.Even when presbyopia comes, this does not change. So for a myope with presbyopia, if they take their glasses off, near is clear, far is blurred. The difference for a myope is evident when they are wearing their glasses or contact lenses to see in the distance. So for a myope with presbyopia, if they wear their glasses to see in the distance, near is blurred, far is clear, just like people without myopia.Myopia does not delay the onset of presbyopia. However, for people who wear glasses, sometimes the need for progressives may be delayed because when the spectacle lens sits in front of the eye there is a prism base in effect and somewhat increased depth of focus, which helps a little with near vision. Myopes who wear contact lenses (or who have had LASIK) will need readers at exactly the same age as emmetropes (people without myopia).

How can I cure myopia? It is increasing day by day, and I am using spectacles of 2.50 for both eyes, is there any natural treatments?

i don't know your age or at what age you started being myopic. It usually starts around 3rd grade and levels out about high school graduation or adulthood. My rx is -5.00 in both eyes so I kind of chuckle when I hear you complain of -2.50. As an optometrist I treat patients who have up to -20.00 rx and still correct to 20/20 with glasses or contacts. Don't fall for any natural treatments or eye exercises to reduce nearsightedness. Eye exercises can help your eyes work together better if that's a problem. There has been a lot of movement toward slowing down or stopping the progression of myopia including using multifocal contact lenses and orthokeratology where rigid lenses are fit progressively flatter which modifies the shape of the cornea. LASIK is another option but not until your myopia is stable.

Does myopia or nearsightedness cause blindness?

Great answers so far. Pay attention to what Liang-Hai Sie said about retinal detachment, because that is a problem that needs urgent attention. Basically if you have sudden floaters (lots of them, not just one) in your vision or a shadow or curtain blocking part of your vision, you need to see an ophthalmologist (not optometrist) very soon. As that can be a tear or detachment of the retina. If your vision becomes distorted (straight lines appear crooked to you) or you notice a black spot in the center of your vision that could be another condition near-sighted people can get called choroidal neovascularization (CNV). Usually those people are more near-sighted than you but I have seen it in someone with your prescription. For the most part your prescription will get stronger, eventually you will need bifocals as well and in most cases when you are much older, you will develop cataracts and will require cataract surgery.

How to calculate a prescription for computer/reading bifocals from a PAL (progressive) prescription?

My husband bought a pair of progressive glasses and absolutely hates using them for computer work. He wants to get a pair of lined bifocals with his intermediate power on top and the reading power below. I know that to work out the intermediate power, you take half the reading power and add it to the distance power, but what I can't figure out is if you then only use half the reading power for the add, or if you still use the whole thing.

His prescription is:

+0.75 +0.25 x 115
+1.25 +0.75 x 082
+2.00

So if we order computer/reading bifocals with a prescription of:

+1.75 +0.25 x 115
+2.25 +0.75 x 082

would we want an add of +1.00 or +2.00?

Is a vision of OD -5.00 and OS -5.25 bad?

You suffer from the same genetic flaw that I have. You have progressive myopia. This is a genetically inherited trait that tends to first present itself at or around 8 years of age and progressively worsens until the end of adolescence. Is it pretty bad? I've seen worse but this degree of myopia makes one pretty much totally dependent of vision aids such as glasses or contacts.
