Why do high school English teachers teach Shakespeare?

Shakespeare was a great writer, one of the best, but he wrote plays, not books. Plays are meant to be watched and heard not read.

Shakespeare did write sonnets as well, but High School teachers don't focus on those, they instead force their students to read his plays.

If English teachers want to emphasize the difference between contemporary English and Elizabethan English couldn't they just pick one of Shakespeare's contemporaries that actually wrote books? Reading Shakespeare's plays as books doesn't do Shakespeare justice.

What is the movie about the poor school in gangs, and the english teacher that changes their mind?

Well, Dangerous Minds is like that, but I think you're thinking of Freedom Writers that came out in 2007 with Hilary Swank.

English Teachers - Teaching Shakespeare?

To get my students excited when we did "The Crucible," I developed this plan:
Scripts: Take the time to make enough copies of the play for each character to hold and read. Students can help you highlight each script for one part. Label each script for the highlighted character. Do one or two extra in case one gets lost. I downloaded scripts from the internet and stapled them together bookstyle (2 staples on one side) so they would feel like real scripts plus be durable.
Casting: Make them familiar with the characters first. Before you cast the play, give them a who's who. Do it on the board and leave it up for a few days. Equate the characters on the play with someone they already know from TV or movies.
Cut to the juicy stuff: explain the implications between characters. Who had a fight with who? What motivates them to be bad, or how did they become a victim?
Tryouts: Tell them they have one day to select the part they want to read. Make them audition so they feel like they have something to really compete for.
Allow for stand ins in every class in case someone is absent.
Post the cast list on the wall outside your room so they can check it before class.
Let them practice reading with partners while you walk around appealing to the ham in them.
Get some students to do simple props and backgrounds.
Others can do sound effects, makeup and lighting. You could even get someone to direct.
Go to the $1 a yard section of material at Wal mart. Don't get carried away, but do something for costumes. Maybe students can bring old stuff from home. A play can take the whole 6 weeks if you play it right, pun intended. Before you know it, you'll have ideas out the yingyang. Invite other classes to come see your 'performance.' Be sure you give them a quick lesson on play etiquette so nobody interrupts.

How did the "cool kids" from your high school turn out?

Well, I've only been to two highschools. The one I'm currently going to, and one in the U.S.I called a friend to help me out, since I still have a year book, I asked her what happened to these so called “cool kids”, and how they turned out after 3 years.Credit to her for helping. That one guy who bullied everyone:He landed in a jail for beating up a girl last year. The guy who always wanted to fight everyone:Also jail. The one popular girl, who called everyone a slut:She had 12 boyfriends, and has two kids. So who's the slut now?The one fat kid, who was kinda a nerd:He lost weight, and now has a girlfriend. The one girl who everyone kinda liked. She moved back to Russia after the school year. That one slavic foreign smartass guy, who was pretty chill:He does comedy standups for the schools talent show every year, everyone likes him.The guy who everyone bullied:He now plays football, and he's pretty muscular. The guy who people knew, kinda liked who was a dancer:He moved back to Ukraine, but would always dance with this other guy sometimes. The short Mexican kid nobody could understand:He learned English, now plays soccer. Who also has girlfriend. The gangster wannabe guy, who always got into fights:Got changed with assault and shoplifing. He got two years of probation, and three months of jail. The guy who was kinda quiet, funny, who always would dance with the Ukrainian guy:He moved back to Russia with his sister and family. Also is a master in the art of smartassery. (Take a guess who that is.)The nice girl who could beat the hell out of anyone, was close friends with only a few people:She has a job, she volunteers at hospitals, and vets. She also pretty much helped this answer. The small group of Russians:They do the same stuff, just more mature and friendly (Pst remember, this school had a lot of Slavic people in it.)The anorexic girl people bullied:She sadly committed suicide. The one kid who was a greaser. He's a friendly badass. He has a girlfriend too.The girl who plays a lot of instruments. She creates her own music, and she wants to be a music artist..This concludes my list. And thanks to my good ol' comrade for helping out with this answer.

If you could teach any class in high school to help prepare students for the real world, what would you teach? It can be a real class or one that you make up.

Over the past 22 years I have taught high school Math, high school English, and high school History. In my school math teachers teach a class called Financial Literacy. Other schools have Social Studies teachers, business teachers, or even physical education teachers teach this class.I have taught this class for 5 years. It is by far the most useful class I have ever taught. Unfortunately it is just a one semester course. I could easily make it a full year course. Some of the topics that are covered include:writing checks and keeping a check registerinterest and compound interesthow to take out a loanhow mortgages workhow credit cards workhow to use a time clock and read a time cardbeing paid hourly and overtimecommissionsalaryhow to read a pay stub and deductionsbuy vs lease a carinsurance - car, life, health, homeowners, etc.what jobs payinvestments- stocks, bonds, mutual funds, real estate, etcretirement, IRAs, Roth IRAs, social security, etcshopping in a supermarketonline shoppingcreating a budgetcollege scholarshipswills and truststaxes - income, property, sales, gift, death, etcIn addition to scheduled topics there is ample discussion in the class about all sorts of things that the students want to talk about. This is a class that you don’t hear, “When are we ever going to use this?” It always amazes me how little so many students know about finances - even the best students. It is my favorite class to teach if the administration allows me to teach it the way I think it should be taught.

If guns are required by teachers in schools, how likely do you think a student would steal one?

Let me first say that I do NOT think guns should be required by teachers, but rather if a teacher wants to carry and is licensed to conceal carry, I think they should be allowed. If teachers were required to carry - then there would have to be some level or regulations about HOW that carry would take place. For example, they must bring it with them, but lock it up in a drawer only when in the classroom. When they leave the room the gun must go with them. This would cut down on the possibility of the gun not being in their possession and potential theft. OR would they be required to carry it on their person at all times? This also would cut down on the potential theft, since it would be carried and concealed and would require either a mugging or sorts to get it off the teacher.Either way, with my suggested way, no one should know who is or who isn’t armed. This would prevent or limits the thefts, in that, who would you rob?

What are the best movies about teachers and classrooms?

Besides the ones that have already been mentioned, I think one of the best movies about teachers and classrooms is Taare Zameen Par(Like Stars on Earth) starring Darsheel Safari and Aamir Khan.It tells the story of a dyslexic boy, Ishaan (Darsheel) who is thought to be lazy and dumb by his teachers and parents. He is a brilliant artist in making who sees the world like no one else, but nobody is able to recognize this part of his life. When he fails his exams, his father sends him off to boarding school. Constant undermining from teachers and separation from his mother, makes him more gloomy. Then comes Aamir Khan, a newly appointed art faculty who realizes that Ishaan is suffering from Dyslexia and helps him overcome it.This is beautiful story giving a message that "Every child is special" and a direct jibe on the Indian Education System which tries to weigh every child on the same scale of grades and pointer. The movie has a marvellous soundtrack. I guess the song "Maa" will leave you completely in tears.
