Name Some Critically Acclaimed Artists You Don

After the critical acclaim received by The Artist, will we see other silent movies being released in the next few years?

No. Same reason why you don't see black-and-white movies that often. It's a tool used to tell a story; if overused, the value will diminish.

What is a critically acclaimed film you despise?

The Matrix (1999)I could not understand the movie, but the sad part is I don’t even want to, it doesn’t excite me enough to waste my precious mental energy to understand this.I don’t like the whole greenish look of the movie, though I know it’s the matrix, and a lot of computerish logic has gone into the making of that greenish look, but still, it’s hard to not hate it.There are some really peculiar characters with no human elements in them like Agent Smith, Jones, which further results in apathy. Even the character of Neo is quite mundane. The film is a technical excellence but surely lacks in plot, characters, and dialogues. It more looks an attempt to create a visual stunner than a proper fictional film.It isn’t necessary for every film to have storylines, and this is a film with a very thin storyline, there are some great films with very little storylines as well like Kubrick's 2001 A Space Odessey, Solaris by Andrei Tarkovsky but the problem with ‘The Matrix’ is that it neither lets me delve deep into its spiritual/meditation arena (like space Odessey or Solaris) nor it allows me to get hold of its storyline.People say it’s one of the greatest action and sci-fi movie ever made, but I still scratch my head and wonder How?

Who are some critically acclaimed modern poets?

Well, let's start with form, modern poets, poets writing now write in all forms and styles, there may be more free verse published because there are a lot of poets who do not know how to work in meter and rhyme or form, but it is not the only form out there.

Some poets to consider would be Nikki Finney, who has won the National Book Award; Mark Doty, who has also won that award, among others; Wislawa Szymborska, Nobel Prize for Lit, she passed away a few weeks ago; Seamus Heaney, world famous and a Nobel Prize Winner in Literature; Yusef Komunyakaa, Pulitzer and nominated for the National; Li-Young Lee; Kay Ryan; Ted Kooser; Kevin Young; Bob Hicok; Rita Dive; Mary Oliver; Richard Wilbur; AE Stallings; Dean Young; Donald Hall; Philip Levine; Patricia Smith...

Well those are a few who will get you started.

If you only ever watch critically acclaimed movies, what do you miss out on?

If you are like me, and I’m guessing you are since you have to ask, your taste has a high correlation with what gets critically acclaimed. In my experience, it seems that decent work done by directors and actors that are known to be first-class sometimes gets evaluated overly harshly. If you listen to Roger Ebert, David Lynch is a great director and Mullholland Drive is an excellent movie and Lost Highway is a botched version of a similar idea. However, I’d say Lost Highway is a really good but flawed movie which is not as good as the average Lynch film but better than 9/10 movies out there. Movie reviewers try to put films in context of other films and history, and so movies get “overshadowed” by other movies or seem disappointing in comparison to other work by the director/author/actor/etc. But if you’re not trying to have a point and come at a film with less preconceptions and goals, yeah maybe it’s not their best work, but you’re less inclined to be disappointed and more inclined to be entertained. So, if you just follow the critics, you might miss out on the less-popular work by talented artists.

What is meant by the term 'critically acclaimed' when referring to movies?

Anything that is acclaimed means a movie that critics are talking about and recommending to see. Movie critics; the ones who get paid to spend their working life watching movies and keeping detailed notes on the acting ability, the writing skills, the directing of the movie and the photography sharpness and creativity. Those people, who supposedly have no vested interest in seeing a particular movie do well, will Judge the movies and sometimes give it a thumbs up or thumbs down. Others may use grading system A-F. It helps to know who the people are who are the critics. Movie Mom is a unique critic who gives details for families to consider when choosing a movie for young kids.
Rarely are they critical of the choice of theme of the movie usually its the things that can be judged as I mentioned before that they will critic.

What are a few of the most overrated critically acclaimed albums in American music history?

Nirvana’s Nevermind. It has its place. But to be considered in the top ten or even twenty greatest (critically acclaimed) albums of all time by so many sources? To be called a greatest album of the 90s? The music wasn’t “groundbreaking” as some would have us believe. Sonic Youth, Fugazi, The Pixies were doing this stuff before Nirvana and some argue they were doing it better. And Malfunkshun, Green River, The Melvins, Soundgarden… Mother Love Bone and Alice In Chains… grunge roots predate Nirvana, and although they were around in the late 1980s, they aren’t pioneers in the same respects as the other mentioned bands.Nevermind deserves praise for popularizing a style, for bringing that style of music to MTV and the masses. Nirvana made a smart choice by going mainstream and they got lucky, being in the right place at the right time in the grand scheme of rock. But does that mean this album is a musical masterpiece? Does it mean the album deserves “critical acclaim?”
