What are the pros/cons of non aggression pact between soviet union and nazi germany?

The Pact was a wonderful arrangement – at least in the short term – for both Stalin and Hitler.

But not for the rest of the world: because it allowed Hitler to attack Poland, free of any worry that this would lead to war with the Soviet Union. Far from it, in fact: because, as a secret part of the Pact, the two dictators had agreed to divide Poland – and much of the rest of Eastern Europe and the Baltic States – between them. What Hitler did not anticipate was that Britain and France would go to war against him when he attacked Poland. So the Pact in fact led to World War Two.

PRO’s for RUSSIA (there really were no CON’s for the RUSSIANS):
[1] The Pact allowed Russia to grab control of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, eastern Poland, and a chunk of Rumania, without any fear that this would lead to war with Germany.
[2] The newly acquired territories yielded plunder and resources for Russia.
[3] When Germany did finally attack Russia 2 years later, the extra territory acquired via the Pact gave the Russians a little more space (and therefore time) that the Germans had to cross before they could attack key objectives (such as Moscow and Leningrad). That extra space and time might have made the difference between Moscow being successfully defended (as it was), versus being captured (as it might otherwise have been).
[4] A most important benefit for the Russians was that the Pact gave them that extra 2 years breathing space, in which to repair some of the damage that Stalin had inflicted on the military by his 1937 Purge, which killed off or consigned to Siberia most of the more talented officers.

PRO’s for GERMANY:
[1] The Pact allowed Germany to invade Poland without worrying that it would trigger a 2-Front war.
[2] When Britain and France tried to support Poland, Hitler was able to fight them with his full strength in the West, not worrying that Russia might attack him from the East.
[3] The Pact also involved Russia delivering to Germany key materials for its military machine, such as oil supplies.
[4] Without the Pact, Hitler might have had a much harder time defeating France.

CON’s for GERMANY:
Just one, but a huge one. The Pact encouraged Hitler to attack Poland. That led to WW2. And that led to his downfall, and the division of Germany between the victors.
