Can I increase my basketball IQ by watching NBA games? Do I need to observe the plays?

Yes, you can learn by watching it, but you can accelerate that learning by watching in a different way than most. The problem with basketball is that we’re naturally drawn to watching the ball and, quite often, the ball is where the least interesting stuff is happening (from a tactical viewpoint, at least). So here are two principles:Watch what’s happening away from the ballWhich player are the others trying to spring open? How is the defence responding? Is this a genuine play to get a player open, or a distraction to occupy help defenders? So much on-ball success depends on what happens away from it. How does Klay Thompson get so open? Anthony Davis might pull a beautiful spin move for a layup, but he’s not that strong, so how did he get such good post position? Damian Lillard threw a pass between defenders for a three, but what got the defence leaning in his direction to leave the scorer open? And how did the scorer put himself in Lillard’s line of sight? What I’ve enjoyed over the past few years:Isaiah Thomas in Boston. Watching how much of their system was designed for him—how he’d move away from the ball in order to come back to it and take advantage of a reacting defence. I’ll be intrigued to see if Thomas ever gets back to that level. Even if he physically recovers, will he find a team that maximises his talents the way Boston did?Late-career Tim Duncan was an excellent example of how to play positional defence, of how bigs can get stops when they lack athleticismRewindFind a quick and comfortable way to rewind, and go over plays that look interesting. A lot of the subtleties don’t jump out until after a few viewsResourcesI’m sure Ben Falk had a great article on watching the game but I can’t find it. Regardless, his site, Cleaning the Glass is really good. It’s a subscription site but there’s plenty of free content.Prada’s Pictures on SB Nation is also solid.I find the audio side of Bball Breakdown’s Youtube videos a bit grating, but there’s some good analysis there.Hope this helps

Is playing basketball on double rim good?

Let's start with the layups. Double rims are a bit more sensitive right? (We like to call them more "bouncy")Taking a nice easy layup on a double rim is similar to a layup off a fast break with a normal rim. It's really annoying when you come flying down the court, take-off from a few inches inside the free-throw line, raise your arm, finger-roll the ball..... and bam the ball bounces off the backboard and ricochets off the rim. It's not a bad idea to be practicing full-speed, fast break layups on a double rim. Metal backboards add to the responsiveness. For jump shots, double rims usually force you to shoot swishes. If you want swishes every single time, double rims shouldn't be a problem. However, banks will have to be perfect, or else the responsiveness of the rim will be extremely selective. But hey, in the long run, practice will improve your game. So, if you're playing basketball well, it should be fine.

What would you classify lebron James playing style as?

Thanks for the A2A Ben, this question may have been asked 6 months ago but it’s still very interesting today, especially with the 2016 Finals being such a defining event for Lebron’s legacy.Lebron James is not a “pure” scorer in the sense that he willingly does much more as a facilitator, rather than stubbornly forcing his own shot. However, I can’t help but think that people who say things like that are operating on outdated information.Lebron James has always been a special talent because of his ability to finish aggressively the rim, regardless of whether or not a defender or three happens to be in his way, and because of his unique passing ability. Either skill by itself would have made him a successful NBA player; combined, being able to do both at such a high level is a devastating combination. Because he’s so good at getting his own offense going to the rim, people criticized him for being too passive whenever he passed the ball. This was partly because he had poor teammates in Cleveland (when he was racking up the assist totals in Miami passing to Wade and Bosh the critics were significantly quieter) and, yes, sometimes Lebron was still maturing as a player and as a leader. With great players, there’s the “right” play within the flow of the offense and the “right” play that only that player is good enough to make work. To use a modern example, sometimes Curry will take a 30-footer off the dribble with 15 seconds left on the shot clock, because he didn’t feel the defender was guarding him close enough. Not the “right” play as the offense is designed to function, but when you’re that good sometimes the right play is different for you than for everyone else. It’s always been the same for Lebron; it took him 5–10 years to really consistently figure out the difference. Now he has, and he’s every bit as capable and deadly a scorer as anyone in the league. So after that long-winded diatribe, how to classify Lebron James’ playing style? He’s a playmaker. 100% pure scorer and 100% pure passer. There’s a Christological Incarnation joke in there but even I think that might be blasphemous, as well as overrating Lebron. But only slightly.
