Need A Book Recommendation For Working Through Anxiety

Do you have any books to recommend for help with anxiety?

It’s a good question, and I'm confident there are countless books available to alleviate anxiety, however I would personally recommend audiobooks, as a substitute for reading in the midst of anxiety/panic. The library is an excellent source for finding audiobooks with narrators who have calming voices, without spending money in the process.Specifically, I highly recommend an audiobook called “The Music Lesson” by Victor L. Wooten, who is a highly accomplished musician. I am a novice musician, and found the book through my library’s online digital media resource. I had hoped it would be an aid to my music, and found it to be very inspirational on several levels, and extremely calming as well. In fact, I had difficulty making my way through the book because of the relaxed state the narrator (Victor himself), and the other cast of voice actors who voiced the book.In addition to the music themes of the book, which are engaging for musicians, there are semi-spiritual, and zen-like harmony-of -the-universe currents in the book which I was skeptical about initially, but I ultimately found them to be comforting in their implementation. All in all, some good life lessons and wisdom packed in this story, which I find very helpful for my own anxiety mitigation. One section of the Music Lesson audiobook in particular comes to mind with regard to Anxiety, and is primarily of interest with regards to your inquiry. There is a section where the main character is talked through a meditation exercise, which I found to be very effective and helped me get into a very peaceful and balanced state. All this being said, I believe this book is also available in print, and you can certainly read it for what I imagine is a similar benefit to listening. For my money, however, the added aural accompaniment of soothing voices, soundtrack, and pacing of the book is preferred for efficacy in dealing with anxiety.-Peace

I am looking for good resources on anxiety.?

well, you know I have the same problem. A lot of my problem is due to menopause, however, I have always been a bit anxious. I tried Estroven for my menopausal symptoms, and 5-HTP which helps with depression, and anxiety. You can buy these items online, or at any health food store. These are supplements, and are all natural. You can also take a benedryl, or ask the doctor to prescribe you the pure form of benedryl, it is used to calm itching, and nervousness, like before a dental appointment. It is called hydroxyzine. I hope you feel better soon!

Anxiety is ruining my life and my confidence! How do I overcome it?

I am 18 years old and my anxiety is holding me back from having fun and being happy.
Now that I am an adult and I am expected to be more independent my anxiety has gotten horrible. I am terrified when I drive the car and I am always worried im going to screw up and cause and accident or piss people off (Im actually not a bad driver). I am still scared to get my license. I have terrible social skills and I don't know how I will be able to get a job. Sometimes I get so nervous when I talk to unfamiliar people that I freeze when they ask something and I look like a deer caught in headlights. I also stutter and scramble my words when im nervous which makes me more scared to talk to people.

For example... My boyfriend and I were going out to see a movie and we went to safeway to pick up food first and I realized that I didnt have cash so I would have to use my debit card and swipe it myself . I will avoid this at all costs because I have never done it before and I don't know how to work the thing so I will look completely stupid infront of the cashier. Anyway we went to order food and I was so anxious about paying with my card that I wasn't paying attention when the guy asked what I wanted so I got more nervous and started stuttering and I got dizzy, sweaty, and confused. Then thankfully my boyfriend ordered for me. Now I had to go over to pay so i handed the guy my card hoping he would swipe it then he pointed at that horrible machine I was always terrified to use and I stared at it for probably a whole minute before doing anything then I swiped my card the wrong direction and stared at it some more until my boyfriend turned it on for me. then I figured it out sorta and swiped my card again and stood there and the cashier told me to type my pin and I was so embarrassed that such a small stupid thing would cause such a problem for me mentally. Its humiliating!

That is just an example of my anxiety in general. Things like this happen a lot. I am terrified to do new things and go out of my comfort zone because I am afraid I will have anxiety over more stupid little things.

Whats a good job for someone with severe social anxiety?

I'm 18, I've never had a job and I'm trying to look for a party time one. I've tried applying for hot topic but I never got a call back and when i turned in my paper application I had a anxiety attack and was shaking. I don't know what to do at this point, my social anxiety is so bad that I can't do anything by myself unless someone is with me. i'm just wanting suggestions.

Are there any good books about dealing with stress and anxiety?

Hi, Thanks for the A2A and I apologize for the long delay in responding. I've experienced exactly what you're describing and I have a friend who has too. Obsessive thinking, where you think of something and then can't stop thinking about it, is very common. I used to have horrible what-if thoughts, obsessing over worst case scenarios of situations that involved myself and/or others. That's likely what led to my panic attacks and work with a physician to get them and my general anxiety under control. These obsessive thoughts can make you feel nearly constantly anxious and reduce your ability to work and relate to others. What helped me was medication, though I also used techniques I found in books and online.I found the book below, bought in 2011 from Amazon, helpful. Amazon.com: The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook (9781572248915): Edmund J. Bourne: BooksI encourage you to talk to a physician about your anxiety. There is help for this. A good physician won't press you for details about your specific thoughts or obsessions. This type of anxiety disorder is very common and there are established treatments.Good luck and let me know if I can help you further.

What is a good job for someone with severe social anxiety?

You could always try your hand at cooking. As a cook, which there is a line cook, a short order cook, a prep cook, etc...you only have to deal with certain familiar people. The other employees. If you work in a small place like a mom and pop restaurant it is even easier as the employee list is even shorter than in chain restaurants.

Why not try an internet job, such as proofing websites or things of this nature. Research is also a good job for those who don't like to leave their homes. You can research on the web or go to a library and lose yourself in the columns of books.

Many places have jobs that are "behind the scenes" so to speak. Call some up and ask if there are any jobs available that do not require contact with the general public. the worst that can happen is that they will say NO and you will have to cross that employer off of your list. A night janitor in some offices would be ideal to ask about.

What are some good jobs for someone with Social Anxiety?

I currently work at McDonald's and although I don't have social anxiety, I have trained someone who has had it.

One of the first things she said to me was, 'I'm going to hate this', and at the end of the day, I found myself trying to force her to come in the next day with about 6 different promises.

The environment of a fast-food restaurant, is as the name suggests, fast. I've had people say to be, 'but you just make burgers', I always say, 'No, I train people how to make burgers', but actually, assembling burgers is almost a secondary part of your job, your main job is actually working together to ensure that whatever it is gets to the customer in a reasonable time which is harder than most people think. So actually, what a fast-food restaurant is looking for in someone is someone who is going to work hard.

Yes communication helps, and is important. But the way in which you communicate while working is different to that when your socializing. I am someone who doesn't like to shout and I don't like to draw attention to myself, but at work, suddenly shouting from one end of the kitchen all the way to front counter is fine.

She still works for McDonald's, and although she is still a quieter member of staff, there is very little she needs to improve on.

It is a job, and you are right, you cannot pick an choose, and actually, McDonald's isn't often easy to get into either. Go, and try your best to get it. Love or hate the experience - it's a job, it's money, and it'll be easier to move into another job since your already employed. And who knows, you might improve your communication and social skills there, and meet some great people.

Good luck :D
