Unknown Gender, Name Help Needed!?
I am a midwife and one of my jobs is to meet with my patients one a personal and emotional level. One of the things I frequently do is help moms name their babies, which is great fun but also a huge responsibility. I thought turning to the yahoo community would help my clients choose the very best name for their bundle of joy. My client, Jana, is expecting her little guy or gal in two months. Her and her husband are waiting til delivery day to find out if baby should wear pink or blue, but that isn't stopping them from naming Baby! Here are their lists for boys and girls, they already have two daughters- Sadie Grace and Emma Nicole. Boys: James Levi Noah Maddox Beckett Ryan Lucas Connor Logan Christopher Jaxon Cade Girls: Leah Anne Payton Gabrielle Elise McKenzie Sophie Alessandra Allison McKenzie Jamie Madelyn

I think the problem becomes clearer when you try to use it as a gender neutral pronoun for situations where the gender is not known but culturally we assume it is likely a woman. If you say "please have the secretary sign his name here" it sounds like you either know the secretary is male, or that you are making a point of something. Taking this further, you could never really say "please have the mother sign the form himself", which indicates that he/himself is not really gender-neutral so much as it is compatible when both genders are possible but defaulting to male—not the same thing at all. Granted, you didn't mention gender-neutral in your question, but I think the lack of gender neutrality in the use of he is the reason there is resistance to using it for all cases where the gender is unknown. To be honest, I would say that these days it's less a matter of he being "frowned upon" and more a matter of writers simply being uncomfortable with using he all the time. By using a male pronoun, you are providing an opinion as to what the likely or default gender of the person is, and a lot of people don't like doing that so they look for ways out of it: alternating gender, explicitly including both (he/she), or using gender-neutral alternatives that are not commonly accepted by style guides and grammar teachers (they, etc.).It's worth mentioning that for many other European languages the situation is different, because they have gender built into the language in a way that English does not. The Romance languages in particular have no neuter form and have gendered third person plurals (e.g., ellos and ellas).Gender being so built into the language has two effects: (1) it means that gender in the language is more purely grammatical and is less tied to gender identity and (2) it also means that pushing for gender neutrality in the language is a much more difficult struggle because of the degree to which the language needs to be changed. As a result, changes to the languages thus far have been pretty marginal.
Should we find out our baby's gender?
With my 1st we didn't find out, that was 13yrs ago, when most things were unisexed. I am 38 weeks now, and after looking for some things in the beginning, I decided we really needed to know, most clothing isn't unisexed anymore, unless you get plain onesies or yellow or white sleepers. I've even noticed alot of the sleepers kind of lean to one gender or the other so that might be a little difficult too. Unless you kept things from #1 and #2 and could be prepared for either I would find out. Then again I remember the surprise with my 1st when I didn't know. Oh boy decisions,decisions...LOL.. I know I didn't help much probably just confused you more. Congrats on #3. If it were me I would find out.
