Need Advice About Going To Uni

What should I declare my major in? Do you have any advice?

Once I finish my GE credits at my community college, I'm going to need to my finish a BA degree... However, I'm debating on double majoring or choosing one or the other. Which is Art and Business. Because if I were to go the Art degree route, I would try and get into Grad school so I could become a secondary elementary school teacher (teaching Middle School specifically). But I also love the idea of working Hospitality or Marketing. The thing is though, I'm not so sure how I would do (all day) being around young kids. I know it might be a long shot, but I've always wanted to be an animator somewhere (either Nickelodeon, or Disney).

And then teaching could be my back up plan if I didn't get work after a internship (right?). I know majoring in Art isn't really a secure field. But I've always loved it. Should I give it a shot? My dad thinks I should major in Business, because I could then get a job right away (If I got hired somewhere of course) out of school. But I know even with a Business degree it's still hard to get jobs out of school. Should I go with my gut here and major in art? I'm finishing my Associates in Computer Science, and then transferring to a University. Thanks in advance for the help. Should I major in both? Or apply just to Art school?

Advice on how to break into IT industry?

I'm a law grad from the UK seeking a change. I'm interested in IT. I know a couple of programming languages and I'm studying for the CompTIA A+ certification which I hope to get next month. I don't want to go to university again. All the IT roles ask for experience but I only have legal, admin and some customer service experience. I've applied for a couple of internships and IT apprentice roles. What else can I do?

I don't want to go to university but have no other choice, any advice?

Only you can know what is right for you but maybe hearing someone else's experience might help? I did a music Btech (total waste of time) then a foundation year to study music tech and physics. I hated school and everything to do with it and I was semi decent at music so I just signed up without much forethought. When I started the foundation year I discovered that actually I really enjoyed mathematics and my tutor suggested I switch from Music tech to Maths for the employability advantage. I passed the foundation year and started a dual honours degree in maths and physics, halfway through the first term I realised my heart was with mathematics and not physics and I switched to just maths. I graduated with a first and I'm now in a good graduate scheme with a company I like, working an interesting and challenging job. I also have a young family so the employability factor actually played an important role, even though I didn't know at the time. In summary the foundation year was the best decision I've ever made and gave me more opportunities than I thought were ever available to me. However, I knew I wanted to work hard from the beginning. I basically did no work in my btech and my mind was itching for a challenge so potentially a very different situation to yourself.

What should I do before going to university?

I just saw an article about this the other day. I am assuming that you are to begin university in the fall. The best advice is to live on your own. You can live in your parents house, you just can not live there being a child. You need to get up every morning, make your bed, breakfast and go out in the world and work. When you get done working for the day, I hope you packed a lunch, you need to make sure you fix supper and have everything ready to repeat this for an entire week. At some point, you will need to go grocery shopping for the meals you are preparing. You need to make sure you have things like toiletries and anything else you need for the bathroom. Of course, you will need to keep your living area clean which will include your bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living area. Have you been washing the dishes. Oh, don’t forget about laundry. You can’t have mom do any of this now. Plus, anything you need, you will have to pay for it. So, if you have to have that Starbuck’s Latte, you will need to find out where the money for it is coming. You will need a budget and pay your bills for such things as rent(to your parents if you are living there), electric, gas, cable, phone, internet and any other utilities you may have. Do you read a paper(you should be up on current events in the town you are living)? You will need to pay for that or go to the library to read it. Oh, don’t forget about gasoline, auto payment, car repair. So, you should have the point by now, live like you do not have another family member to do these things for you because they will not be there. You may think that you can just run home on the weekends, but other things will come up and you will need to know these things. It does not matter if you plan on living on campus and there is a meal plan, these are life skills that are better learned before college rather than after with tons of credit card debt waiting for you when you graduate. Good luck and enjoy college, it will be one of the greatest times of your life.

I am in Upper Sixth (Senior). I study French, Spanish and English. I recived my AS results at the summer and got A,A,B. I was considering going to University in America. How do I go about doing this? Would I ned to sit another type of exam?

Or do I not have a chance getting in? Let's just keep our fingers crossed that it's true Americans love the Irish!

Thanks

My parents are trying to force me to go to university?

Hes your dad, he only wants whats best for you.

If I don't go to university, am I making a mistake?

I don’t know. But I know the following. If going to university/ college is something you are considering because where you live such is the path of most young people just like you, then doing it is probably (potentially) a huge mistake. A much bigger mistake than staying out of it.Why?Because people go to college/ university for all the wrong reasons nowadays. Most of them do. They think that it’s necessary. That without this degree they will be nothing. That without this degree they won’t be able to get a job. That their parents will disown them. That people will talk. That they will be perceived as losers, or as less smart/ less intelligent/ less everything. That they will waste their only chance to become somebody. This kind of reasoning.More and more people got used to treating a college degree as some kind of a validation of a person’s intelligence, smartness, skills, etc. And it sucks. And makes a bunch of assholes very rich in the process (those who bullshit you that college / university degree is everything). So, really, I don’t know. Depends on your motivation - why do you want to go there.Make sure to make your own decisions. Don’t follow the same script that is followed by the vast majority of young people. Don’t do it to make someone else happy (your parents, family, HR department). If you’ll do it, do it for yourself. Not because it’s needed, not because everybody around you is scared to death, not because it’s what “wise” people do.Do it because you want it and because you need it for yourself.Otherwise it’s a fucking waste of time.
