Need Electronical Help Ripped Off

What does it mean when there's a sticker on an time that says "electronically protected"?

Hi! So today i went to CVS (a drug store) to buy a pretty expensive hair product. Anyway as i was waiting in line to pay i noticed a sticker on the item that said "warning this item is electronically protected" so, basically i was just wondering what this means? Im assuming it has something to do with theft prevention, but how can that work? Just curious :)

Do you read books in print or electronic format?

I definitely use both. I love the feel of a book in my hands, which is part nostalgia, part habit, and part bibliophile tendency, but screens are cool too. I used to carry a book with me literally everywhere I went. Now, no need. Most books I can go either way, but probably, on balance, more fiction happens electronically. I doubt I’d try to tackle a technical manual or textbook on a screen, due to real estate concerns alone. Something where the amount of text displayed at once is not important works much better on a small screen, obviously. One thing I really, really like about reading electronically is that my progress gets synced automatically between my iPad and iPhone. At home, I like to get comfy on the couch with my iPad and a cup of coffee while I read. But when I’m out, I’ll go a page or three at a time on my phone quite frequently. Being synced is incredibly useful for that. And also, despite my misspent childhood where a flashlight under the comforter was the move of choice, it is SO convenient to read in the dark on an illuminated screen instead of having to use a separate light!Enjoy your book, however you read it :)

The U.S. Postal Service was electronically notified by the shipper on October 12, 2011 to expect your package?

It simply means the label was made out and the shipping has been paid for.

Packages often get mailed without being scanned into the system. Delivery Confirmation is only to confirm the actual delivery of the package. It is not true tracking. Sometimes a package will get scanned along the way and other times it doesn't.

The estimated arrival date is just an estimate. It may take a day or two longer. If it was mailed yesterday you shouldn't really be surprised if it takes until Saturday to arrive. You do not state what method was used and I'm going by Priority Mail. If something like Media Mail or Parcel Post was used then expect it to take at least a week and perhaps as long as two.

Is wrapping frayed electrical wiring in duct tape safe?

No. It’s not what duct tape is designed for. If you want to wrap frayed wiring, use the right material. If you can slide it on, heat shrink is a good way to do it. Often it’s necessary to cut the wire back. The strip back each piece to where the insulation is good leaving perhaps half a centimetre of copper exposed. The slide on a piece of heatshrink, solder the two exposed ends together, slide the heat shrink over the join and apply heat. It can even be done multi-core treating each strand separately and an extra, larger piece. It is fiddly and makes a bulky join, but it can help if the alternative is to replace the cable. Note it’s not very suitable for where a cable is constantly flexed. There are also special self-amalgamating tapes which can be used. Standard so-called insulating tape is not suited. Note that local regulations need to be checked to see if self-amalgamating tapes are acceptable for a given use.

Does a plugged-in electric fan consume electricity even when it's turned off?

Take a TV for example. When it's turned off, it still takes in electricity. Most of the energy goes toward keeping the TV in a semi-ready state to turn on, basically keeping it warm so that it does take forever to turn on and be ready for viewing. There is some drain from timers and whatnot, but this standby power is the bid consumer.

Your basic fan shouldn't have anything like this, so you really shouldn't need to worry about it. As long as there isn't a circuit being completed by having the appliance plugged in you shouldn't have a worry. TV and other entertainment electronics are your biggest users of standby power, so once you've hit those you've already hit the bulk of your savings. Little things most likely won't add up much unless you have a lot of them, but you do need to consider inconvenience issues such as the one you addressed too if it's only an extremely minor savings.

Have you ever been ripped off by the ATM?

There was plenty of money in my account, I had just checked the balance that morning by phone.
I was in town and had to pay a bill with cash, so I found the nearest atm and tried to get $20. It even said,"please take your cash and reciept" but neither came out!
I went inside, and they wouldn't do an atm audit. They said I'd have to go to my bank and get a printout of transactions. I did, took it back, and they STILL made an excuse and said they "weren't going to drop everything to go count $9,000 in the atm" Like it would've taken so long to count $9,000! They're bankers!
They told me MY bank had to do some research or something, and send them a report of some kind!
Why does my bank have to do anything?! It's THEIR atm!
I went back to my bank and did the paperwork, but they said it was bullcrap that they wouldn't do an atm audit, because they are supposed to, banks do it all the time.
Anyways, I still haven't got my $20. I guess I'm just happy it was only 20.

Is a contract void if my name is spelled incorrectly?

I recently electronically signed my name on a contract with Body of Change at LA Fitness (rip off, don't EVER give your money to these idiots) and when they printed out a copy, it showed that they had typed my last name incorrectly. In other words, the credit card which I gave them to extract the funds from my account does not match up with the name on the contract. Does this void the contract? Or, will this potentially make getting out of the contract difficult?

Has a patent examiner ever ripped off an undisclosed invention in a provisional patent?

At the US Patent & Trademark Office, patent examiners never get to see provisional applications (Why would they? Provisionals are never examined.). An examiner would have to spend his or her spare time looking through provisional applications just for fun (if he could even figure out how to do that, as the applications are usually scanned in and stored electronically, and not just anyone can look at them), and unless he or she was really bored, then who wants to spend their spare time reading through thousands of provisionals just to find one really good one? If you are asking if the file clerk who processed your provisional application would rip off your idea, then I doubt it, as the clerks do not have any kind of technical background (unless they are students working their way through school), and they probably would not appreciate a great technical idea if they saw one; I doubt that they spend any amount of time reading the applications that they process.Disclaimer: this is my own personal experience, and in no way reflects any official position of the USPTO. This is not legal advice, and I am not your attorney; this answer simply reflects my own personal opinion.
