Where I live, there is a program in several cities that is called horseback riding for the handicapped. What they do is have both mentally and physically handicapped kids ride horses with two "spotters" walking on either side to make sure they don't fall off and to control the horse. The kids wear headgear and have a belt or harness they wear with ropes on each side that the spotters hold while they walk. They always pick very gentle, well behaved horses. What the idea is, is that it gives the handicapped person confidence, some extra control over their balance and motion control, for those who have trouble with that, like cerebral palsy victims, and a sense of fun and freedom they can't usually experience. There has been proven help to these kids in these areas which in turn, helps in other areas. I don't know if there is anything like that where you are, but maybe you could plan a project around something like that. I don't know if it would be feasible to find a handicapped person to demonstrate this with on one of your horses or not. There is always a worry, I guess, about injury. But you could at least think about it. If you Google "Horseback Riding For the Handicapped" you will get several hits if you need information. Evidently Michigan isn't the only state that has programs like this. Hope that gave you some ideas! Good luck!
