What is the purity of gold and silver found in cell phones, computers, and TV's?
It's kind of an awkward question, like asking what is the purity of gold found in gold ore. It kind of depends on how much work you do to extract the gold or silver from the electronics. There are not just gold or silver wires sitting inside electronics (except maybe some really high-end audio stuff where they use these wires to show off). The gold and silver inside electronics is used either for conductivity or corrosion resistance and is usually bonded pretty hard to the component. For instance silver is put in "paints" and put on circuit boards. To get the silver you would probably burn up the circuit board leaving a mess containing silver. Gold is electroplated onto contacts so you have something that resists corrosion and conducts electricity really well (copper contacts for example, corrode and then the contact picks up serious resistance which messes with electronics). So the gold on there is pretty pure (because electroplating is really depositing molecules of gold on a surface), but the underlying base metal and the gold are pretty connected. You will need some process to extract the gold off the contacts and then you can get gold in whatever purity you want just by tweaking the process. It's not economically feasible to extract these metals from the electronics. You should know that these electronics also contain lead, mercury, and cadmium (and probably other things I don't know about). That means if you got an enormous pile of old electronics and tried to recover the gold and silver you would end up with gold and silver (which you like) and these other metals which you really don't like. If you just melted down the whole mess you would have this amalgam of valuable metals and toxic waste disposal problems. Someone would have to give you a lot of gold and silver to want to deal with a problem like disposing of cadmium. There is, of course, no way to make cadmium non-toxic and anywhere you dispose of it is a problem. You may have noticed that nobody out there is mining old electronics for gold and silver. What is career growth after 3 year in designing field as a mechanical engineer?
I joined an MNC at the same package in simulation and analysis about an year ago. But got in touch with many designing guys of different experience numbers. So I feel myself eligible to answer this one.First things first. What exactly you do? Indian market offers jobs for design and simulation engineers particularly in SERVICE SECTOR which means you get work from your counterpart in some other country working for a TIER -1 supplier or an OEM. You need to meet the standards laid down using the drawings sent and create a cad model or sometimes modify and validate those designed by your customer within a limited timespan. Mark this word. Time is really important for service sector and the pressure faced by your company from its competitors reflects on the time alloted to complete a particular work.Initially its exciting and challenging…. later feels monotonous because same software, drawings, stuff like those faced by software guys. Further more package thing irritates at this stage. Same scenario exists in any company even if you change your company after 2–3 years. So patiency is the game changer. You go on with the job alongside do your M.Tech and aim at completing M.Tech by the time you have fair experience say 3 years.Why M.Tech?First reason if you don’t find your job as promising, M.Tech placements in any good University can help you. Then second reason is GATE + M.Tech pays you stipend some around 12k per month released quarterly. Sounds cool and stupid also.RIGHT!!! Its not easy and also not at all impossible going to college in the morning and night shifts in the company. Believe me I have seen many guys doing this stuff and working really smart and hard.Thats a good story.If no patience to work hard for that salary… silently reject the offer and search some other field or else pursue your masters in a good University.Hope it helps!!!!!
