Why does the steering wheel lock up while driving?

What Causes the Steering Wheel to Lock Up? | eHow Losing control of your car's steering is a terrifying experience, one that can lead to a crash with horrific consequences. If this happens to you, then you must try to bring your vehicle to a stop at once and determine the cause of steering wheel lock-up before you drive your car again. There are a number of reasons why your car's steering has suddenly locked up including:Key MechanismNot every steering wheel problem occurs when you have the transmission engaged and are heading down the road. Sometimes, drivers report that their steering wheel stays locked even after inserting the key into the ignition. When that happens, the car probably cannot be started let alone driven. More than likely the key assembly has worn out and needs to be replaced. However, before calling your auto mechanic, try to move the wheels to the left and to the right as sometimes the steering column "catches," a problem that can be resolved if you jiggle the wheel.Lock PinGeneral Motors issued a pair of recalls for the C5 Chevrolet Corvette (1997-2004 models) due to problems with locked steering. In addition to being locked while starting, owners complained that in some cases their cars could be driven but with no control of steering. This problem is due to a lock pin that fails to withdraw fully, allowing contact between the pin and lock plate. Visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA ) website (see Resources) for information about recalls #04006B and #04006C or call your Chevrolet dealer.ConclusionWhile the three causes mentioned here are among the top reasons why a steering wheel may lock up, there could be other reasons. Contact an auto mechanic for assistance, or if you are handy with repairs, consult a Haynes or Chilton repair manual (or anything similar) for guidance.

As a truck enthusiast, what does your rig say about you? What kind of modifications have you done to personalize your truck?

Mine is a 1996 F-250 4x4 5 speed. From 1994 to 1997 Ford put their new Powerstroke turbodiesel engine into the 1990’s “old body style” (OBS) chassis. This created a truck with classic looks but the performance of something a decade newer.I bought mine for dirt cheap with a ton of miles on it, over 300,000 now. I put snow tires on the factory wheels and bought a second set of wheels and mud terrain tires (pictured) for summer. All my tires are OEM size (about 32″) for maximum fuel economy. Someday I might swap the front TTB’s for a solid Dana 60 and do a little lifting, but it will sit at stock height until then. The previous owner put F-350 springs in the rear plus add-a-leafs. This gives it a stiff, rough ride but I can carry enormous amounts of weight in the bed. I added a tool box for lockable storage and in the summer I have a full size ladder rack on top which I use for kayaks and canoes. It looks better without the rack though. The body is in much worse shape than it appears in this backlit photo, but each little scratch and ding is the scar from a battle won and a memory made. The front bumper was stock until I hit a deer with it. Pete Green's answer to If you hit a deer and it was severely injured and suffering, would you put it down if you could safely do it or would you wait for the police? It was rendered unusable so I replaced it with a bumper off an old camper trailer that just happened to fit pretty well. I plan to weld up a custom bumper with D-rings over the summer.Inside I have three aftermarket gauges: one for boost pressure, one for exhaust gas temperature, and one for ambient cabin temperature. Green LED strips tied into the dimmable dash lighting illuminate the floor and match the gauge cluster. I added the EGT gauge when I installed a 6-position tuning chip.I hope what this rig says about me is that I do care a little bit about presentation, but the emphasis is definitely on utilitarian performance. It’s a workhorse above all else. Thanks for the a2a.

Will a faulty transmission control module cause a car not to start?

When you say won’t start, is that meaning will not turn over, or will simply crank and not start, big difference. Transmission neutral switch will prevent engine from turning over, but transmission module is a shift control and will not usually prevent car from starting in my experience. If anything, clean connector contacts for some are located in area which collects road grime, so check connections. If you simply put shift in neutral and try again. Moving shift lever through all positions as you are trying to start will sometimes give you your answer if it starts. You need to be more specific as well as make and model to get accurate answer. In the case of no crank situation, here is a way to analyze your starter control module. Most vehicles have a gear selection indicator in dash, so with ignition on, simple watch indicator as you shift from P park to R reverse to N Neutral and each of 1–2–3–4–5 gear positions if you have the typical select shift transmission option. If the indicator coordinates with your shifter, it is likely not your transmission start module. Always try to start your vehicle in the neutral position as well is an easy way to narrow down problem. If it is a dirty transmission position contact, this may solve your no crank situation, check for bad plug connections as well, this is common problem on many models where location of transmission control module is exposed to elements. Again, there are many issues which can stop an engine from starting, so more specifics and model and options would be needed for more accurate answer.Forced-Success-System.com

Can I drive my automatic car in overdrive all the time?

“Overdrive” technically refers to the existence (and use of) a gear that turns the transmission’s output shaft faster than its input shaft is spinning, so that the engine can turn more slowly to maintain a particular speed. Put another way, non-overdrive transmissions tend to have a top gear with a 1:1 ratio — for every one revolution of the input shaft, the output shaft turns one revolution, as well. Overdrive transmissions, however, typically have a high gear around 0.7:1, meaning that a little less than 3/4ths of a turn of the input shaft still spins the output shaft one full turn.In an automatic transmission, “overdrive” gear is just another gear, and the transmission will only shift into it when that’s warranted, based on vehicle speed, engine speed, load, throttle position and pressure and rate of change, and other factors. But if your automatic transmission gear selector has an “Overdrive” (or just “OD”) setting, you should generally use that for all normal driving. Towing might be an example of when you might want to not leave the shifter in OD.There is another aspect of automatic transmissions worth covering, and which is often inaccurately considered “overdrive” — a lock-up torque converter.A torque converter is sort of like a clutch — it’s a fluid coupling between the engine’s crankshaft and the transmission’s input shaft. In the old days, torque converters always “slipped”, so they were inefficient — they couldn’t achieve a 1:1 ratio. That was bad for fuel economy. In the late-1970s/early-1980s, manufacturers came out with “lock-up” torque converters that would physically connect the input side of the torque converter (the housing) to the output side (the stator) under certain situations — basically just light throttle, like cruising on the highway. Often, it’s this torque converter “lock-up” feature that is controlled by a button on a shift lever. And, normally, it, too, can and should be left engaged (so that it automatically locks-up when conditions are right). Again, towing would be a time that torque converter lock-up would not be ideal, because torque converters are relatively fragile, so it can make sense to disable the lock-up function. But modern transmissions and their controllers are adept at choosing the right gear and the proper lock-up status under any driving condition, so it should be better to just leave it in Overdrive and let the car figure out what’s best to do when.

What is overdrive and how should I choose between putting my car in drive or overdrive?

All the answers here are good for describing what overdrive does, but don't really give examples as to when you should use or not use overdrive. Most have said overdrive is good for highway use to reduce the RPM's of the engine and therefore conserving fuel. This is true as that is what it was designed to do.Additionally, overdrive would be safer in slippery situations where ice or wet roads may be a factor as the drive wheels would be much less likely to see a sudden acceleration from loss of grip. However, when do you not want to use overdrive?A good rule of thumb for this situation is to compare it to situations where you would find it beneficial to down shift in a manual transmission. These may include:When you are preparing to switch from a slower moving lane of traffic to a faster lane. Passing. Extended downhill grades, to prevent having to ride the brakes.Extended uphill grades to maintain power Hills when you are having trouble maintaining speed.Curvy roads where engine braking would be beneficial.TowingHopefully this helps.

What does LTZ stand for, on the back of cars and trucks?

Not sure how we got talking about fords and whatnot. … but there's a bit of incorrect info here. So let's straighten some things out. Barring special editions, it's basically 3 different trim levels. I do not recall the “L” designation, but “S” is a level above base model, usually with cloth interior, but some upgraded features. “T” is the highest standard trim level, basically matching that of a cadillac. “Z” is SPECIFICALLY a performance upgrade. Z71, Z24, Z28, etc. 71, fullsize, off road package. Wheel flares, nerf bars, 4wd, lighting, and sometimes other upgrades, like skid plates, lift, lsd/lock, and so on.. 2’s are sport performance, with the engine to match. You can get all z packages in base trim, and even further stripped down. For instance, a true Z28 doesn't even have a radio, sound deadening or power door/seats.

Should a car battery be removed if it's going to be parked for a month or more?

Oh boy… you’re going to get all sorts of answers on this one.On a 2009 Lexus that is going to be parked for a month, I would not even consider removing the battery. There is no compelling reason to do so and the pain and aggravation of removing and re-installing is just not worth the potential problems associated with it.It is not uncommon for a vehicle to sit on a show-room floor or an auto-parts shelf for 30 days, right? If you’re worried about the battery discharging while you’re gone (which is unlikely), a much, much better idea would be to connect a trickle-charger… but if the battery is in good condition, you won’t even need that.Removing and reinstalling a battery is not difficult but there is a procedure for doing it correctly and you risk damaging the electrical system if it’s not done correctly (particularly on re-installation), not to mention the hazards associated with handling an acid-filled, 25 pound lead-heavy component. If the battery is removed…You will lose all (or most) data stored in memory (and on luxury cars, that is considerable). It’s not just the radio settings, there is GPS info, seat-position settings etc., etc.In some cases, the computer will have to re-learn certain protocols. You won’t have an alarmIt can’t be moved in an emergency. On some vehicles (particularly BMWs) you might not even be able to get back in the vehicle with just the key.The worst that’s going to happen is you’ll need a jump-start when you get back.If you do remove it, I can practically guarantee you’ll have a check-engine light when you re-install. Don’t you wish I was your mechanic?
