Need Help On Lyrica Question

Lyrica & Fibromyalgia questions?

Crimsonhedemon has given great information. The only part unanswered was the part about stopping Lyrica.

Pregabalin (Lyrica) is an anti-epileptic drug. However, it has been very effective in decreasing the symptoms of FMS. Some points to remember are:

Lyrica does not work in most cases immediately, you need to be on the medication for a while, and stabilize on the proper dose before the effects are optimized. Usually the optimal effects are not seen for over a month.

Lyrica helps relieve the symptoms of FMS, but is not a "miracle drug". In most patients they will see an approximately 50% decrease in symptoms.

Once the symptoms are reduced the other modalities which Crimsonhedemon mentioned will be more effective.

Since Lyrica is an antiepileptic drug, many of us who use the feel that, if you have reached a high enough dose, you should be tapered off the medication. This is not necessary at lower doses.

I also agree that for long term management, proper sleep architecture is a key to management of FMS. Ambien does not allow you to obtain proper sleep levels, so you do not restore the neurotransmitters which are exhausted with chronic pain conditions. Another medication for sleep is a better plan. Some patients are able to use tricyclic antidepressants as Crimsonhedemon mentioned. But for many, I find that using a natural substance, such as melatonin is a better choice for long term sleep management.

Hope you feel better soon.

Lyrica prescribed for Anxiety?

Pregabalin (Lyrica) is an anticonvulsant drug used for neuropathic pain, as an adjunct therapy for partial seizures, and in generalized anxiety disorder. It was designed as a more potent successor to gabapentin. Pregabalin is marketed by Pfizer under the trade name Lyrica.

It can be used for anxiety, but not recommended. In the U.S., it is considered to have dependence liability if misused, and is classified as a Schedule V drug.

Treatments for General anxiety disorder (GAD) include medications and cognitive-behavioral therapy. A combination of the two has proved the most effective in alleviating symptoms; medication alone may reduce some anxiety but will not eliminate it entirely.

SSRIs are commonly used to treat GAD. Examples include SSRIs such as sertraline (Zoloft), paroxetine (Paxil), citalopram (Celexa), and escitalopram (Lexapro). Benzodiazepenes such as diazepam and alprazolam are sometimes used in the short-term in order to alleviate extreme cases of anxiety, but they are not safe for continuous use because of the high risk of dependency. Conversely, it is very safe for a person to be on an SSRI antidepressant for many years. The anti-anxiety drug buspirone (BuSpar) is sometimes used in addition to or instead of SSRIs in the treatment of GAD.

SSRIs work because both anxiety and depression are thought to be associated with the neurotransmitter serotonin; thus a great deal of people who experience depression also experience anxiety symptoms. When both disorders are diagnosed, this is called comorbidity. Other antidepressant drugs such as tricyclics and MAO inhibitors are not used in the treatment of GAD.

I recommend sertraline (Zoloft) or paroxetine (Paxil). Paroxetine has more FDA approved indications than other SSRIs. Paroxetine has a short half life and you can take drug holidays if develop any side effects. All SSRIs might cause sexual dysfunction in most of the men treated. So you may need drug holidays later.

Lyrica, please share if medicine helped or harmed you?

I am being pushed really hard by docs to take Lyrica for M.S. and chronic pain. The problem is that I am diabetic and have had depression before. Neurontin has not helped so I guess they figure Lyrica would. I have heard the warnings on it and am worried. my aunt takes it and has gained 49 pounds and I always depressed. I also have had a problem with certain meds causing me to be depressed before. if anybody has taken the med please let me know if it helped you or not.

Celexa and Lyrica Effects.?

I have to take celexa for my anxiety and lyrica for my fibromyalgia. I am only 28 years old female and since I started to take these medications my sex drive has definitely decreased. I don't have the urge and cannot for the life of me get into it. These medications are supposed to help my life, and in a way I guess they are however, they are destroying my personal life. My fiance has definitely noticed. Please PLease PLease if you have any advice please respond. This is critical. I'm to the point that I'm ready to stop taking my medication but I'm afraid that I will end up in the hospital.

Can gabapentin (Neurontin) and pregabalin (Lyrica) be taken together for fibromyalgia?

“Can gabapentin (Neurontin) and pregabalin (Lyrica) be taken together for fibromyalgia?”Yes. They do not compete, but side effects can be additive. Their peculiarities can allow complementary use.Because Neurontin can promote sleep, I usually recommended 100–1200 mg as a bedtime only dose. Sleep promoted by Neurontin is deeper and segues in a normal manner through the various sleep stages, so it tends to be restorative. This is a godsend for people with neuropathic pain. For those people not noticing Neurontin sedation, daytime usage is possible, but I found such people to be in the minority.Lyrica is not as useful as a sleep aid, so is more flexible in terms of daytime use.So I did occasionally prescribe daytime Lyrica and pre-bedtime Neurontin.
