How long does it take to restore an HP laptop to factory settings?

So the other day i tried to turn on my laptop, and it didnt go to the regular windows startup menu....instead it went straight into a menu that was trying to restore a system and error and it said it could not be fixed.

Im wondering what i should do, i tried playing around witht the options, and it seems like the only way to save my computer is to restore it to factory settings (which kills me :/ )

And if i do restore my computer to factory settings, how long would it take?
A friend of mine said it could take around 5hours...is that really true?

Oh and btw i have and HP laptop, with windows vista.
