What is conventional card catalog?

A card catalog was used to search for books in libraries before the use of computers became commonplace. The cards were kept in large file cabinets that were alphabetically labeled near the front of the library. If you knew the title, the author, or the subject you could look in the file cabinet that corresponded to your book. You then got the call number from the card, and went to get your book.

From Wikipedia:
Goal

Charles Ammi Cutter made the first explicit statement regarding the objectives of a bibliographic system in his Rules for a Printed Dictionary Catalog in 1876. According to Cutter, those objectives were

1. to enable a person to find a book of which either (Identifying objective)

the author
the title
the subject
the category

is known.

2. to show what the library has (Collocating objective)

by a given author
on a given subject
in a given kind of literature

3. to assist in the choice of a book (Evaluating objective)

as to its edition (bibliographically)
as to its character (literary or topical)

These objectives can still be recognized in more modern definitions formulated throughout the 20th century. 1960/61 Cutter's objectives were revised by Lubetzky and Lubetzky and the Conference on Cataloging Principles (CCP) in Paris. The latest attempt to describe a library catalog's goals and functions was made in 1998 with Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) which defines four user tasks: find, identify, select, and obtain.

What do you do if Geek Squad steal customers computer parts?

First make a list of things that are missing..and make sure they are missing...
and have proof you had them at one point.
How do you know they are missing besides your friend detected "The stolen parts"
Make a letter saying if the hardware they took was malfunction and when you will get the replacements...dont accuse them of anything until they say or have an explanation..
then from there you move onto the next step.. depending on their response

the sueing part.. the geek squad and best buy have their set of lawyers ready to win any battle against them.
which meaning... they may accuse you of slander and such for accusing of them doing that...
also void your warranty for opening the laptop..since on some hp computers u need to have it done professionally or it voids the warranty...and so on and so fourth

Is it normal to feel like you did something wrong as a parent when you find out that your kid has autism?

Trust me, autistics are born that way. Autism is not a learned condition. [My grandson is autistic.] It's not the result of anything you or the wife did. To use the lay term, it's the way your son's brain is wired.

But the good news is that caught early proper therapeutic training can condition the autistic person to live a normal productive life. [Again the grandson.] Five years old should be early enough, but you need to get started with proper care ASAP.

One of the key issues with autistics is socializing. They can become the kid whose school report card says "Does not get along with others." And they'll live with the incorrigible label for their entire time in school...and after.

So you and the wife have to ensure whatever school your son goes to is well versed in how to handle autistic kids.

And that might take a lot of encouragement on your part to convince the school to properly handle your son. It might even come to threatening to sue the school system if they don't cooperate. [Personal experience of my daughter in law.]

Anyhow rest assured it wasn't anything you or the wife did. it was just the luck of the draw. But on a parting note...both Bill Gates and Albert Einstein were autistic (Asperger's) and they seemed to have done alright...don't you think?

My autistic grandson...he's running for Class President at Lewis and Clark University this year. He's learned to get along with others I think.

Does PTE Academic has a human factor to evaluate your performance or is it all automated?

PTE Academic is one of the leading tests in Australia and it has been used to prove English proficiency for student visas in Australia for last many years. Recently, the Department of Immigration & Border Protection of Australia has validated PTE Academic for granting temporary graduate, skilled, work and holiday, and former resident visa programmes as well.PTE Academic is easier than IELTS; that’s one main reason for its popularity. While in IELTS, a student is required to speak to a rater which tends to be worrisome for those who aren’t as fluent in English. PTE gives you the benefit of speaking into a microphone so the students have a better chance of scoring high sans nervousness and anxiety.PTE Academic is totally computer-based. Its results are far more accurate and unbiased. What more, the results are available online within five business days of taking the test! I have found a very detailed comparison of PTE or IELTS . movie maker is the most well known free software for making a movies but it was limited to many formats.

There are also many other slideshow maker software can do this.

The most easy and powerful one is Photo Movie Theater which supports all video formats. Collect photos and video clips, insert music, import them to the storyboard of Photo Movie Theater. it never loses.

Computer networking questions....?

You have been hired to consult with a local architecture firm and suggest improvements to update its LAN. The firms staff of 35 full time and 8 part time employees hasnt had time to pay attention to the network, which was set up many years ago by another consultant. Currently, the LAN consists of 30 desktop pcs, 8 laptops, and some peripherals, such as printers. Employees use their laptops at home as well as at the firm, so they have been configured for use with broadband internet connections. At the firm, a router connects the LAN to a local ISP through a T1 link. Connected to the router are five switches positioned at different locations around the building. Each network client connects to its nearest switch. Every client is assigned a static IP address based on the group of addresses the firm leases from its ISP. Not surprisingly, staff have reported frustrations with maintaining this setup and worry about whether it will allow them to increase the size of their network. What steps do you take to simplify the firms client IP assignment process? What measures will help conserve IP addresses as the firm grows? Draw a simple network diagram that includes the firms LAN clients, its existing connection to the internet and all necessary connectivity hardware to implement your suggestions."

What are five components of a computer? How do they help a computer function?

Well, I’ll just list you the most basic ones.Let’s start with Power Supply. It’s the component which receives electric energy from your home system and sends it to the rest of the PC. It converts AC to DC which produces quite a lot of heat, so it needs this big cooling fan at the top. Pretty much that. Then you have MotherboardWell, motherboard is what connects all the components. Here, you have, a socket for the processor, and a few card slots, for graphics, RAM, sound or other expansion cards you choose to have in your PC. At the upper right corner of this picture, you can notice the same ports you see at the back of your PC case. It’s where you connect USB stuff and so on, you know the protocol. Other components, like HDD or power supply, are connected using cables, since you just can’t fix it to the motherboard. It also has BIOS on it, but i don’t really want to get into details.Next thing is Processor (CPU)CPU (Central Processing Unit) is what some people call “the brain” of the computer - a little chip which - just like it’s name says - processes information. It decomposes complex problems into basic math problems, and solves them that way. It controls what happens inside your system. And then we got Graphics CardIt’s a card which generates graphics and displays stuff on your monitor so you can see it, nothing much. You usually have a GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) integrated into your processor, but nowadays nobody uses integrated graphics - they aren’t enough for most peoples’ needs.Let’s proceed to RAMRandom Access Memory (RAM) is a volatile memory which stores the data you are currently using. It’s much faster than HDDs, but still much smaller - so it’s not being used for storing stuff temporarily. When you are working with some files, they are copied to RAM, which delivers them to processor with bigger speed, which is crucial in working on a PC properly. And the last, but not the least important is Hard Disk DriveThis is a non-volatile memory, which means that you temporarily store your data on a HDD, and it keeps it even when power is off. It works using magnet heads that can be damaged easily, so you shouldn’t play basketball with your drive. Nowadays, HDDs are being repressed by newer and faster SSDs (Solid-State Drive), but they are still too expensive to entirely replace hard disk drives. And that’s pretty much it, if i missed something, I’m up for corrections. I hope someone finds this thing helpful.
