I know native speakers may say both, but I have to disagree with some of the distinctions made in other answers. Gramatically speaking, either you use 'of' OR the genitive ('s) to denote the relationship but not both in the same sentence:I'm a friend of your mother. OR, I'm your mother's friend.For me, the sentence, 'I'm a friend of your mother's.' begs the question 'A friend of mother's what?', Her dog, perhaps?EDITI noticed a comment that this wasn't strictly possessive, but while we all recognize the similarities between her book and her friend, we also recognize that the first relates to possession and the second still uses the possessive adjective, but to indicate a quite different relationship.As I said at the beginning, natives do use the double genitive. And if we use pronouns in the same phrase, I don't think many would say 'a friend of her' (or 'him'), but would prefer 'a friend of hers/his'.

My ex’s plan was to make sure that I was dead so there wouldn’t be a divorce settlement. He had no intention of sharing assets. That’s why the emotional and psychological abuse was so intense . I OD twice. He was building the set to get away with the perfect murder. What a triumph and how powerful that made him feel ! He had to get me back home and then drive me back to insanity but this time the call to the ambulance wouldn’t be till he was sure I was dead. Then he would play the poor me and concerned husband with the crazy wife he telling everybody, saying I was schizophrenic etc. I never went back. The evidence of his 3 yr cheating popped up. Told him I wasn’t coming back. And I didn’t.House sold and monies in trust with lawyers until settlement was agreed. Because he stole all our saving his family had to go on welfare and rent while toddled off and bought himself a house property. I knew you couldn’t reason with a narc so I took him family court. Papers had been served on him. Let the judge decide. It would be final then and he couldn’t blame me.Now this is where to me he was predictable. He too much coward face a judge. He would be exposed. He couldn’t control anything in that environment. So 3 days before court I get a proposal sent to my lawyer all fair and square. It was all signed up.When it all came out. Mum and dad booted him out of the house. Because he took all our money majority of the household went with me. I left him with all the rubbish stuff as that’s what he deserved.I also removed his side of the family furniture and other bits and pieces purely for leverage. I stored it all at my parents house. I knew he was going to fight dirty. So upon settlement these items were to be returned. Sure no problem. He would have milked this to the hilt. Aww she has my mother’s stuff, how could she blah blah blah. He couldn’t give a crap about his late mum. Oh he was seen to be a very dutiful son but I knew better.So in the end it all backfired on him.I was still alive and I got everything I was entitled to by law. And the houselot. My car. His blood would have been boiling.And still will be !!
