What are you predictions for MLB standings in 2018?
Sadly, I could not even venture a guess. Even though I love baseball and do know a lot of the history, particularly of what I call the “Golden Age” between 1920 and 1980 I have ceased being a fan of the game the way it is practiced at the Major League level. The games are too expensive and too long. Each player has to have their entry music. To me it’s like professional wrestling. Bill Veeck once said “ what will ruin baseball is not the high price of talent, but the high price of mediocrity.” I find the modern product mediocre. A .240 hitter who might not even make a AA roster in 1968 making 3,000,000.00 plus a year. I know they say it’s market value, but that is only because they play in palaces subsidized by middle class taxpayer. I do venture out to a minor league game from time to time or a semi-pro game or even American Legion. The players at that level still care about the game. I guess the breaking point for me was an interview I saw with a prospect who was being queried about some of the past greats and actually said when asked a question “who’s Willie Mays.” That prospect never made the team, but that ended my fandom with Major League baseball. Okay, rant over. Sorry I didn’t answer your question, but I had to get it off my chest.
What are your predictions for the 2017 NFL standings?
At this point in time September 11, 2017 (Assuming no more significant injuries (which we know will happen):AFCEast: NE, Miami, Buff, Jets. One of the easiest divisions in football.North: Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Cleveland, Cincy. Ravens defense will be best in league, Pittsburgh offense best. Cincy is on the decline, Cleveland on the rise.South: Tenn, Houston, Jacksonville, Indy. Houston wins division if Watson emerges quickly and they get some consistency from O’line, D will be fine. Tenn emerging with a good D. Indy just has zero depth and no idea when Luck is back.West: KC, Oakland, Chargers, Denver. Toughest division in football. Division winner will probably not get bye in playoffs because the division is so tough. I could see any of the 4 teams win the division… Chargers, if healthy, surprise of league.NFCEast: Dallas, Philly, Giants, Redskins. Second Hardest division in football. Giants O-line coupled with Mr interception Manning struggles all year. D can’t carry them. Dallas depth prevails. O strength with O-line, Receivers and running game carry team. Philly on rise, but still a year or so awayNorth: Green Bay, Detroit, Minnesota, Chicago. Detroit if healthy is never out of a game. Minnesota is perpetually over-rated. Chicago will be a surprise, but GB is the best team in the NFC.South: Crapshoot. Atlanta, TB, Carolina, NO. But I could see any team but NO win this division. Atlanta takes a step back offensively but improves defensively. TB improving, but I’m still not convinced they are there yet. Carolina still has the weakest QB but a good D.West: Seattle, Arizona, LA Rams, SF. Seattle walks away with this division. Arizona looks old. I’ll wait to see the Rams play someone before I get excited.AFC Playoff seeds: 1.) NE, 2.) Pittsburgh, 3.) KC, 4.) Tenn, 5.) Baltimore 6.) OaklandAFC Champ: PittsburghNFC Playoff seeds 1.) Green Bay 2.) Seattle, 3.) Dallas 4.) Atlanta 5.) Philly, 6.) DetroitNFC Champ: Green BaySB Champ: Green BayBut…..”Any Given Sunday”
What are your predictions for the remainder of the 2017–18 NFL season?
Here’s how I think the playoffs will turn out:AFC Seeds:(WEST) Chiefs: 12–4(EAST) Patriots: 12–4(SOUTH) Texans: 10–6(NORTH) Steelers: 9–7(Wildcard) Broncos: 9–7(Wildcard) Jaguars: 9–7NFC Seeds:(EAST) Eagles: 12–4(WEST) Cardinals: 11–5(NORTH) Vikings: 10–6(SOUTH) Saints: 10–6(Wildcard) Rams: 9–7(Wildcard) Seahawks: 8–8I think a couple of things:Houston is the real deal if their offense keeps clicking and the defense begins to play team football. Playing in one of the easiest divisions in football, they’re practically guaranteed a playoff seed. The Panthers are atop the division but Cam isn’t looking like healthy Cam and that scares me. I don’t think they can sustain an offense without his running ability.Russell Wilson and the ‘Hawks squeak into the playoffs, carried by their strong defense and resurgence of CJ Prosise in the passing game, but they are seriously hampered by their abysmal offensive line. The Rams look good, but the youth on the team may not be able to withstand the longevity of the season. With the addition of AP and a running game, the Cardinals just need to wait until David Johnson comes back from his injury and they become a serious contender. The Jaguars are 100% reliant on Fournette and his running ability. If he gets hurt or is slowed by injury, they could easily go the rest of the season winless, plagued by their poor special team play and Bortle’s inability to pass the ball downfield.Packers don’t go to the playoffs without A-Rodgers. Sorry, but he’s the entirety of the offense in my opinion, and the defense simply isn’t good enough to win games if they’re on the field for extended periods of time. The Browns and 49ers both win one game.

How well can statistics predict the NFL?
Let’s look at 2 angles.1 angle is rote prediction. You take all the factors you know and put them complex puzzle, then you try to factor in things like weather, whether the QB’s girlfriend is mad at him or not, whether that DB followed his normal game day ritual of 2 bowls of Wheaties and not 2.5, and you’ll find that it can be convoluted. For what is predictable, there are studies and variables, but even in the end, the success rate isn’t more than .500. This might be what you do if you an analyst on TV or the radio talking football. The other angle is Vegas. Bookies in Vegas get paid to handicap football games and they are REMARKABLY good at it. Their rate is 55–60% at handicapping games. The idea they have there is to dispassionately look at the determining factors as to what makes things happen in a game. Some of these are things that are absolutely measurable, some are not. Never is it just a “hunch” though. These guys make a living of deciphering facts and chewing up numbers to come up with real answers, then applying numbers to those answers to create a bet that people will bite on.Is there a singular statistical model? Not likely. And if there was anything that resembled something that was close to a 60% winner, no one would ever tell you, because that guy is making some serious $$$ betting football games.
