Why is contemporary art important?
Contemporary art is not any more - or less - important than the art of any other period in history. “Contemporary art” merely means the art that is being created at this point in time. Therefore it has precisely the same significance as all art does. It is a reflection - a mirror - of today’s culture.For the last several decades that has been visually difficult for many people, because art has been almost exclusively abstract. Of course, there have been artists doing other things, all over the place, but they have been largely ignored by the critical establishment, and you won’t find their works in any art books.This is because the most recent preoccupation of art has been a reflection of the winding-down of a belief system focused primarily on the rational part of our humanity. This system was terrific - it enabled us to develop science. Today, we are entering a new belief, which will hopefully allow us to become more balanced human beings, and therefore, art is beginning to reflect that - opening once again to the inclusion of figuration, albeit with more complexity than found in traditional art.Art shows us where we are as a culture, and sometimes prefigures where we are headed. The arts - visual and musical - also provide a way for us to access and more fully comprehend aspects of ourselves that cannot be communicated through words. Things such as love, faith, compassion, friendship, charity and many others, cannot be fully understood through the stripped-down, linear means of words. This is why writers use metaphor - attempting to create a picture that will communicate something larger and closer to the truthful fullness of what we mean by these words.Visual art and music, however, go beyond metaphor, and do what words cannot. They engage our deeper humanity directly. And this is why art has existed throughout history. It’s not just important. It must be means for those of society who proudly defy intelligent life with a deliberate attempt to lower their iq to 69. He admitted on camera that he doesn't know why people consider him so highly when as he himself stated, ‘I can just mumble anything and people will accept it as if it's profound. He basically is clowning his own fans by openly insulting them and it should be taken into consideration that they continue to prove his point. So if you haven't heard of him, disregard this answer because I may have just contributed to the very thing I despise. I could go more in depth as he is an alleged rapist, dropped out of school at thirteen years old, and has done nothing but insult real talent but that is irrelevant.
