Small Business Grants.... Info For Free?

Grants.gov is the main resource for grants, and it was designed to be the one-stop source of information on grants. They have a link to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance http://www.cfda.gov which is the federal database listing all available government grants.

I am unsure why you would think that these resources; probably because you are be looking for grants to help a for-profit small business start or expand a business and can't find any. Unfortunately, hardly any grants exist for those purpose. Most grants are available to non-profits, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments.

Take for example Grant 59.043 Women's Business Ownership Assistance - this grant is given only to those who will create women's business center that will train women entrepreneurs. Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program, on the other hand, is given to minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT. These are very specific grant information from CFDA.gov

Even if you buy books on grants or pay for lists, all they will give you are rehash versions of the CFDA database. Still, you'd be hardpressed to find anything that will give free money to small businesses owners for the purposes of starting a business.

Your best bet is to check with your local small business development center, local non government organizations and local government if they have some assistance to small businesses. To cite an example, a Washington DC area nonprofit called Community Business Partnership recently entered into an agreement with the Association for Enterprise Opportunity to promote the DHL Advancing Micro-Entrepreneurs Program and the DHL Cares Project. They have been asked to select ten clients who meet the criteria for AEO/DHL program participation. Those ten clients who agree to participate in this program will receive $1000 for business development as well as free and reduced cost shipping during the program's duration. This is the type of programs available for business owners.

Business major with a Graphic design minor... What do you guys think?

I think its a great idea. The obvious thing that come to mind when I think of Business and Graphic design is "Marketing", but I wouldn't limit myself to just this one discipline.

I personally majored in Design(Architecture) and minored in Economics. It might seem like a odd combination (I thought so too in college), but it has proved to be extremely helpful in advancing my career as an architect.

Being able to quickly switch gears from Creative mind set to a Quantitative/analytical one is a skill that I think very few people have in the workplace. I could be solving design problems with designers in my office one minute, and get on the phone next minute to talk to the client about strategic financing for his new development.

What would happen if all unnecessary business was eliminated and replaced with massively funded research facilities dedicated to advancing the human race?

What would happen if all unnecessary business was eliminated and replaced with massively funded research facilities dedicated to advancing the human race?Who decides what is “unnecessary”? Surely you can imagine just how arbitrary that would be. Shall we remove baby toys? Playgrounds? Puzzles? Knitting needles? Skating rinks? Who gets to decide such an important thing? You? Me? Shall we vote on it?How about instead we refer to what we know. Our creativity is part and parcel of our ability to innovate and improve our living conditions, which in turn extends our lifespans. What you may deem unnecessary another might need to spark that flow of creativity. That creative flash may be the next breakthrough in medical technology disguised as a video game component. In essence you would be removing the very thing that is needed to accomplish the goal you claim to want. The phrase “cutting your own nose off to spite your face” comes to mind. Rather than advancing a humanity by such actions, humanity would stagnate and die out in fairly short order. If you want to further humanity, take care of your fellow citizens, support scientific research. Stop trying to fix what isn’t broken and fix things that are actually fixable.

Do you regret becoming an engineer?

No, but as with every profession there are negative aspects to be aware of.

1. Relating to other people.
Engineering education doesn't usually teach us how to do things like:
temper our approach or interpretation by reading body language; understand the importance of knowing what motivates others; present technical views from the perspective of other people's values, not just the technical problems or solutions; use of psychology and interpersonal skills in general.
Skill in the above not only helps professional growth and advancement but makes for a lot more pleasant work environment.

2. Experiencing the Humanities.
Benefiting from the wisdom of others through the ages helps us grow outside of our own egos and experiences, and appreciate not only the views of others but appreciate others themselves because we will understand and relate better to others.

3. Develop non-engineering interests.
It is too easy to focus on mastering and applying engineering skills in the workplace, to the extent it may make us spend too little time in enjoying and appreciating our family, or enjoying recreational interests such as learning to play a musical instrument or sail competitively, or just exploring and enjoying the whole world outside of engineering.

4. Develop the habit of life-time learning.
When an engineer first graduates, the needs are to satisfy an employer and build a life. But, while advancing using the skills one learns in the University, the technical world itself is expanding, changing emphasis and direction, developing new skill requirements, developing new markets, and so on. It is absolutely vital to realize engineering is a lifetime learning process, not only a lifetime profession.

There are other caveats to be aware of to avoid negative pitfalls, such as economics, reasonable investment skills, employability in desirable fields, and a lot more, but the above were some I found very important as an engineer but weren't taught very effectively in the Universities I attended.
