Non-productive Cough. What Could It Be

I have a productive cough but feel fine?

Do you smoke? Because I don't think people cough up brown unless they are smokers. If you don't smoke, that may be a sigh of an infection like bronchitis. A lot of times losing your voice and bronchitis go together.

Dry cough 2 months-non productive?

We don't have insurance either, but it sounds like u should see a doctor. It could be many things really, coughing for that long is pretty serious.Just to name a few things though,it could be:
TB
Asthma
allergy
bronchitis
hepatitis

I am NOT a Doctor, but I have known people with these problems and they too suffered a dry cough for long periods of time.My mom suffered from a cough for OVER a year before she was finally diagnosed with asthma.

What is non-productive coughing?

A non productive cough is a condition which doesn’t produce any phlegm or mucus. It manifests with an uncomfortable sensation in the throat, and most of the times is the result of an infection by cold or by some flu viruses. Still, a non productive cough doesn’t necessarily imply that no mucus is present. The lungs can contain some liquid, but it would be impossible to expectorate it through coughing. This type of cough usually appears after a respiratory disease such as any flu, cold or sinus infection. Also, it can appear to a person which took contact with different irritants such as dust, smoke or any other chemical fumes. If the person in question also suffers from asthma or any type of allergy, it will surely experience a form of non productive cough. What will make a nonproductive cough, productive!?

A steam bath - best if you can put a little eucalyptus or tea tree oil on a rag in a tub with the shower on as hot as it will go. Sit on the edge of the tub - you want your face as close to the running water as you can get and breath in the steam deeply. Sit for 15-20 mins and you will be impressed by how much looser your cough is. I do it with my kids even - morning and night for a stubborn cough or congestion, I've never had to do it more than 3 times.

Peace!

I have a dry non-productive cough when I stand up or sit down. When I lay down,I stop coughing. What can I do?

Suck a whole clove without chewing it to soothe a cough. Apples bring a great relief to a person with dry cough. To relieve fits of coughing due to dryness in the throat, suck a few pepper corns. Check out http://usefulinfo-cough.blogspot.com/ for more remedies and information.

Is it wise to suppress a productive cough?

Tough, tough question, particularly since there are all kinds of "productive" coughs (mucus, blood, pus, etc.), and each one has a different set of treatments based on the various etiologies. >.

What would cause a chronic cough, non productive, and a painful lymph node in the jaw, with a normal x-ray and spirometry?

Since an "x-ray" was part of some individual's evaluation for the stated condition, WHY would the OP solicit non-specific opinions from us strangers on the internet, who don’t know him/her "from Adam" nor have access to the medical records and are TOTALLY UNABLE to examine him/her?I know why? To obtain opinions that are worth less than used toilet paper! Just tell that patient to ask his Physician. Quora is not the place to get 2nd opinions from!

If guaifenesin allows for more productive coughs, why am I not coughing up any more phlegm?

Short anwer:Because Guaifenesin (like other OTC cough medicines) don't work.Long answer:Guaifenesin was approved by the FDA way back in 1952, when no proof of efficacy (and safety?) was required.Research done on over the counter cough medicines are of low quality, and according to the famous Cochrane Collaboration are at best ambiguous about the efficacy.Although prescribing cough syrups was very popular in the fifties and sixties, after the seventies of the last century, when it became known there was no proof they did anything good, they weren't prescribed anymore.  Lay people still believing in them buy them OTC.  This is even true for the more modern ones, like bromhexin, in spite of all the marketing efforts of the producer. In short, although some drugs claiming of work by thinning the sputum can be found in lung tissue after oral ingestion, it has never been proven clinically they do thin the sputum or do anything else worthwhile. My Professor in 1973 summed it up like this: how could you believe drinking a syrup, which enters the stomach but not the bronchi or lungs, will do anything helpful in the lungs?
