How do landline telephones work even without electricity?

Back when telephones started you couldn't be assured that people had the right kind of electricity at home (if any) and public telephones certainly couldn't be assured of any electricity. Also as you cover long distances you introduce all sorts of issues with earth loops and voltage potential. The easiest solution was that the phone exchange provided enough current to ring the bell on the telephone by sending an AC voltage signal down the line. In simple terms this AC signal causes some electromagnets in the phone to move and that rang the bell. These days the phone doesn't use electromagnets to ring a bell, but uses power to make a tone. The phone also gets a constant -48V DC supply which it can use to maintain its internal electronics waiting for a call. There is a value called the REN or Ringer equivalence number which is used to indicate how much power a phone device will drawer from the system. If you exceed the REN allowance on your phone line, and thus exceed the maximum power that the phone exchange will deliver, then your telephones may not work correctly and you may have broken some by-law or contract with the phone company.

Why do hip hop heads hate Macklemore?

So I'm also a hip hop head myself I listen to mainly old school hip hop and and a little bit of underground hip hop and other artists like Jackson, Bob Marley Jimi Hendrix etc. I've never been a huge fan of Macklemore but I'll admit that I do listen to his music sometimes and I think he is a talented rapper, I haven't listened to any of his mainstream stuff yet, so I'm mainly judging him on his older stuff before he reached mainstream success. I've only heard two of his mainstream songs, the one is called "same love" and I think the song was quite good and has a good message to it, the other song I heard I found to be awful, I can't remember the name but the lyrics go. "I'm gonna pop some cash, only got $20 in my pockets."

So Overall I think Macklemore is a decent rapper, and I was wondering why Hip Hop Heads don't like him, is it because he made a song for gay people, which I don't see anything wrong with because gay people are human just like everyone else, but hip hop is quite homophobic at times as we all know.

Meal ideas for poor vegetarian college student?

Whoever suggested Ramen noodles is dead wrong. (Even the seasoning) is so full of sodium and saturated fat, it's ridiculous. Steer clear of that.

Any-who...if you're on a budget (aren't we all these days!) here are some things I've found to go a long way:

~beans (dry)
~rice (brown)
~frozen veggies (like stir-fry style)
~oatmeal
~nuts
~seitan

I eat black bean and rice burritos a few times per month for dinner. The toppings possibilities are endless. The beans and rice are really filling. I make a huge pot of it on Sunday night and eat off it for the entire week. After you cook the rice, simmer the beans and add whatever else you like: onions, garlic, green peppers, tomatoes, jalapenos, etc. It'll cook down. Spoon it into a tortilla and top with sour cream, cheese, olives, salsa, etc. I use whole wheat tortillas. Those are fairly inexpensive. If you have a little extra money some day, you might want to try the veggie crumbles by MorningStar Farms.

I eat rice almost daily. Not only is it good for the above recipe, but it's also good for Asian fare such as stir fry. I am single, but I shop at warehouse stores just the same. I've found a huge bag of frozen Asian-style veggies that lasts me about two months. It saves me a lot of headache to throw on the veggies and cook the rice.

Bowl for bowl, oatmeal is much cheaper than cold cereals. Not only is it great for you, but you can dress it up for whatever fits your mood. (bananas, brown sugar, raisins, etc.).

Nuts are a good snack. They are filling and you don't need too many to get the good fats. Just make sure you go for the unsalted types.

Seitan is wonderful. A box of the quick mix will run you about $2. It's some of the best meat substitute I've ever used. It's versitile nd it lasts a long time (for me anyway).

If I wear a military uniform with no rank, medals, or insignia, is it considered stolen valor?

Wearing a military uniform without rank, ribbons, badges, etc. would not qualify for stolen valor and shouldn’t offend anyone. Buying old GI surplus shirts with patches on them is fine too. If you and your buddies want to put Army patches on fatigues and go play airsoft 82nd vs. 101 Airborne, knock yourselves out. The USMA football team even sews Army division patches onto their uniforms as a tribute to those units.Where it becomes stoopid is when people go out and buy dress uniforms and then pin a bunch of crap on them and then walk around the mall trying to pass themselves off as Air Force Recon-SEAL-Rangers with Bon Jovi haircuts and cheesy-poof physiques.Don’t be this guy:The thing that those idiots don't realize is that they are surrounded by veterans every day. Just because they don't make themselves known, doesn't mean they're not standing right next to you. We have all done pushups for having a ribbon or badge off by just a centimeter, so we know exactly where every badge and ribbon goes, and we know which direction the patches should face. We can spot those mistakes a mile away (Are you listening Hollywood?).If you picked up some surplus fatigues at Goodwill and someone asks; "Hey, were you with _____?" Say; "No, I just got this shirt from Goodwill because I thought it was cool." and he'll leave you alone, but if you say "Yes", expect some very specific follow up questions, ending with you face down in the dirt, or a video mocking you posted on the FaceyPages or YouBoob. Also: I can't speak for anyone but myself, but I find it offensive when people wear military dress uniforms for halloween. Men fought and died in those uniforms. They are not costumes.
