Not Enjoying My Hamsters

Should I let my hamsters hump?

They are probably not the same sex, pet shops are very bad at sexing hamsters.

I would separate them straight away and keep them separate. The female is probably too young but is also now probably pregnant. Female hamsters do not like mating, it's painful and they would rather not - it's only instinct that makes them, if they had a choice they would never give birth.

Once they are separated, start feeding the female bits of high protein, vitamin and mineral foods that will help her and her babies cope. Things such as plain cooked chicken, plain cooked egg, lentils (raw or cooked), tofu, baby food (with no fruit, sugar, salt, onion or leek - meat and vegetable kinds of baby food), porridge made with semi-skimmed milk and bits of raw green vegetables.
Feed her little bits of one or more of these foods every day, but keep the portions small and if you notice she has runny poo cut them down a bit.

Once the pups are born you must leave them completely alone for 2 weeks, don't clean the cage or go anywhere near it except to add food and water. Any extra stress or your scent being around the nest could cause her to kill her young, especially since she will be a young first time mother. Then once they are two weeks old and all of their eyes are open you can begin to handle the pups gently and you can clean out the cage.

Once they are 3-4 weeks old, it is time to sex and separate them. There are pictures online that help sex male and female dwarfs, but if you are still finding it hard you could perhaps take them to a vet or nearby small animal rescue for them to help you.

Then they stay together with their same sex siblings until they are 6 weeks before being sold/given away to new homes. Keep feeding them the high protein foods while they are growing. I personally do not recommend taking them back to the pet shop to be sold there, that just allows them to profit on their mistakes - you might want to let them know that they need to be more careful in sexing their hamsters though.

Hamster toy//chew thingyy ideas!!?

I'm trying to cut back my cost but still make a hamter very happy!!!

SO far instead of buying a hideout i'm using a tissue box turned on its side w/ the plastic cut out. What else can i do to make the cage interesting??

Any ideas are appreciated. But try to be creative not just the toilet paper roll things.

Why does my hamster keep rolling over while on his wheel and in his ball (but while at a complete stop, not from tripping, he’ll be at a complete stop and just roll over purposefully)?

Why does a two-year-old child do exactly the same thing if you give them a few square yards of gym-mat to play on?The answer in both cases is “because the first time they tried it out of curiosity, they *liked* it, so they’ll do it whenever they feel like enjoying that sort of action and feeling. You’ll find yourself forced to the same answer if you ask why anyone masturbates: it’s because it’s a fun way to get something you need.

When hamsters have tumors, do they suffer?

my hamster has a tumor under his chin and its about an inch in length, but its really thin. he has had it for about a month, and after he eats, he makes this wimpering noise. im not sure if he is hurting or if he is enjoying his food. he used to make sounds similar to the ones he is making now when he didnt have a tumor. i heard it was normal for hamsters at the age of 1 year to get tumors, and he is already a year and a half. i want to put him to sleep, but then again i dont. i dont want to put him to sleep if he is not suffering and if he still has a long time to live. but i do want to put him to sleep if he is suffering and hurting. i am not sure what to do. has anyone had a similar situation with dwarf hamsters? what should i do?

What type of hamsters are least likely to bite? How can I prevent a hamster from biting? I've heard that they can make sweet pets but some bite.

They are indeed! Hamsters are very sweet if you take care of them properly. There are many species of hamsters in the world, but only 5 types of hamsters; Syrians, Campbell Russian Dwarfs, Winter White Dwarfs, Roborovski Dwarf Hamsters, and Chinese Hamsters which are domesticated. These breeds are widely known and kept in captivity as pets.Answer to 1st question:Every hamsters do bite. They are rodents — critters after all. Among them however, Robos are the least likely to bite. Instead of biting, they tend to run. A lot. They will escape from your hands easily, especially because of their small body. They're also very quick and energetic, thus considered as 'no touch, watch only' kind of pet. So, even though they don't bite, they're not recommended for beginner owner.Answer to 2nd question:In the beginning, hamster bites you because your smell is new. Give them time to adjust within the new cage and environment. Some other times, a hamster might still bites because your hands smell of food. So see if washing your hand before handling the hamster will prevent this.Syrian hamsters, the traditional kind, do sometimes bite. But Syrian is very easy to tame since they're quite affectionate by nature. In fact, they seemed like enjoying the moment when being touched. They make a great pets and highly recommended for new hamster owner… or even anyone who is looking for small-sized pets. I heard Chinese hamster's personality is similar as well. But to be honest, I don't know much of them so don't take my words for granted.Dwarfs (other than Roborovski) on the other sides, are very bitey. They will keep biting from time to time, even after they're being tamed. They’re just like that. But don’t worry too much. They usually just nibble and won't hurt you a bit. In general, female Russians are most likely to bite because they're more aggressive than males, Especially during pregnancy. In spite of that, keep in mind that each hamster personality may vary.So what's the real conclusion here? Well, the key is patience. It is the true meaning of taking care for pets. You'll soon know that animal bite isn't necessarily a problem anymore, because over time they’ll also learn that you're not threatening them. Being bitten is not always resulting in bleeding. Anyway, who knows, you might get lucky with bringing back a new hamster to your home that just happen to be easy to tame and doesn't really bite.

Why do loads of people HATE hamsters?

Many people think small and furry = mouse or rat. Which is of course nonsense.
Also many people associate rats and mice with uncleanliness and germs, as these animals are typically found in the wild, or in your home if you have enough crumbs and other tasty things about!

Any rodents in pet stores though are specially bred animals and are very clean. Hamsters are no exception. Hamsters are immaculately clean and have no "hamstery" smell at all if kept well. They are also very friendly and sociable animals, enjoying cuddles from their human owners and being stroked.
