Not Sure If I Miscarried. The Ultrasound Tech Wasn

Abnormal fetal ultrasound?

My DS screening at 12 weeks, which included bloodwork and an ultrasound looking at the nuchal translucency, came back really bad. I was given 1:20 odds of having a baby with a chromosomal abnormality. I had an abdominal CVS done, which is like an amnio but more painful and slightly riskier. I am SOOOO glad that I did it. Later on, he showed more "soft markers" for DS, and I would be so worried not knowing what was going on. And now I know, with over 99% certainty that my baby does NOT have DS; his chromosomes are just fine. In my research, I did find women with much less odds (1:300) that had their amnio results come back positive for DS. It is really hard to know based on the screenings. A CVS or an amnio is the only way to know for sure. I'm glad I did it. It is the only thing that allowed me to breathe easy again.

As for the risks, with an amnio, if you go to a doctor that performs them a lot, the risks go down considerably to about 1:400 miscarriages. Also, there is some evidence to point to activity as a culprit. Meaning, when they say bedrest for 2 days, they mean it. Mothers that violate this put their babies at high risk. Additionally, some of the babies that miscarry after an amnio would have miscarried anyway because of their abnormalities. Just food for thought...

ADD: My CVS procedure was VERY similar to an amnio. They just use a larger needle for the CVS than the amnio. The reason is that in the CVS they take chunks of placenta out, while in the amnio they are only removing fluid (amniotic).

Did it hurt? Yes. Was it all that bad? No. They numb your tummy with lidocaine, which always stings (like a bee sting). I felt tugging as the needle went through my skin, then nothing until it went through my uterus. Passing through my uterus, I felt something similar to cramping. And I felt uncomfortable while it was in. The whole thing felt like 10 minutes or so. The needle didn't hurt much on the way out. Then I had a couple of drops of blood from the injection site. I cramped for about 20 minutes afterward. For the procedure, I focusued on the baby. I knew I had to stay still, so I stayed rock solid and concentrated on that. And I looked at my husband, not the needle. It was about what I had expected, painwise.

Is it possible for an ultrasound tech. to simply miss the heartbeat at 9 weeks?

Did you see the baby moving during the ultrasound? I had a quick one at around 10 weeks and you could see the baby moving around, jerking, etc. If your baby was not moving and there was no heartbeat, I would be concerned. However, I'm sure mistakes have been made in the past. I would never take the word of just one person at one ultrasound.

Call your doctor. Ask for another ultrasound to make sure.

As far as a D&C goes, I am pretty sure they are fairly safe. I've known people that had them because of miscarriages and went on to have perfectly healthy pregnancies later on. However, if your baby is not ok, you can always choose to wait and let nature take it's course and expel it naturally. There are also medicines you can take that will cause your miscarriage to happen, but I'm not sure till what week they are effective.

The best thing for you to do is talk to your doctor right away and get rechecked first. Don't make any decisions until you know for sure. Then talk to your doctor about how you feel about your options if things don't work out.

Praying for you and your baby

How do you know that you've had a missed miscarriage?

I am asking women with experience. Are there signs, like did your pregnancy symptoms stop all of a sudden or did you have no clue? And I am talking about a MISSED miscarriage (specifically in early pregnancy) not a regular miscarriage where you bleed etc.
I am really REALLY paranoid that I may have a missed miscarriage. I went in for my ultrasound and the tech didn't see the baby's heartbeat. I am just 6 weeks along and i am really stressed out about it. She didn't really take her time so I am not sure if she just couldn't find it or if it wasn't really there and she didn't really explain what it meant. She didn't look too concerned but I AM!! Now I am reading all these horror stories about missed miscarriages and I am seriously stressed.

Miscarriage: I think it was the sonographers fault. Please Help!?

How far along were you? Miscarriages are more common in the first trimester. Also, if there is a chromosomal defect, that would be the cause.

I am very sorry for your loss.

MISCARRIAGE WITH NO CLOTS OR TISSUE PASSAGE? HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?

I was measuring between 5-7 weeks up until thursday night when I started bleeding and having intense cramps. after a few hours of heavy bleeding I passed one, and only one clot/tissue.. It was about 4 inches wide 2 1/2 inches think and redish purple.. I didn't get a close look at it but the ultrasound tech said it wasn't fetal tissue although she looked at it from a distance away and i couldn't bring myself to stare at it. I'm guessing now that it probably was. in the ultrasound she could not identify a gestational sac but saw something that looked like it might be but it measured about the size of 5 weeks (i should have been 7 weeks based on lmp) they monitored my hcg and told me to come back in three days.I bleed like a light-moderate period and didn't pass anything resembling tissue or clots, just blood, and i had very very minimal cramping after the first 24 hours. They gave me another ultrasound monday which showed nothing.. they ruled out ectopic, however they said they were ruling it out 75% because they couldn't be entirely sure. They said my hcg had gone down from around 300 to 20 and it looked like there was nothing, no tissue no anything in my uterus. they gave me flagyl to prevent infection, the bleeding has come to a complete stop as of today but im noticing that...tmi ... it smells like death and im having some moderate cramping on both sides that seem stronger on my right. The doctor assured me that there was nothing to pass, which doesn't make sense .. my last miscarriage I bleed and clotted and passed tissue... he told me I probably just didn't see it... Which is no possible Ive been monitoring every movement and keeping an eye out.. How could I have miscarried and not have passed anything but blood, with the exception of that one giant tissue? I have this feeling its not over even though the blood has stopped.. and the doctor said it was... does the pain indicate that maybe some tissue is retained and i just have a moron for a doctor? has anyone had an early miscarriage and only really bleed? please don't respond if your just going to tell me how you passed clots and such... I've read enough about that..I really need to hear from people who didn't pass clots, or from people that maybe didn't pass them at first but weeks later may have... or perhaps its ectopic and hes wrong on that too.. im terrified?
