Obama Admits Voter Id Laws Not Keeping

What's so wrong about the voter ID laws?

The Republicans are always whining and moaning that we have too many laws, that the govt. is getting too involved in every aspect of our lives. But here are laws that are clearly unnecessary since fraudulent voting has never been shown to be a problem.

In one of the states (Pennsylvania, I think) the new law would require something like 100,000 people to get photo ids in just a few months. The courts said the effect would be to disenfranchise people, mostly older, poorer, and minorities. They said the law could be put in place AFTER this election, giving everyone 2 years to comply. Otherwise the state itself wouldn't have time to process all the new requests for photo ID.

And remember, this comes in the wake of many proven Republican subterfuges--long lines and broken machines in Democratic districts, inferior machines in Demo. districts, and the famous 'felon purge' in Florida in 2000.

Katherine Harris purged 70,000 names from the Florida voter polls, the overwhelming majority in Democratic districts. She purged felons, people who had the same names as felons, and in some cases people who had only the same first or last name. Then she borrowed another list of felons' names (from Texas!) and purged those tool Nobody was informed that their names had been purged, they wouldn't find out until they came to the polls on election day, and by then there wouldn't be time to fix it. The Republicans themselves admit a 10-15% error rate, meaning that at least 7,000 people were unfairly disenfranchised, overwhelmingly in Democratic districts, in an election Bush won by <700 votes. Harris should have gone to jail, instead she spent a term in Congress (where she would also be surrounded by crooks. 8^) ).

The voter ID baloney is just more in that vein. I don't think it will work this time, though, because the election is not going to be that close.

Are Voter ID laws really as bad as the Democrats claim? If so, what could be done to convince the Republicans to support their removal?

This question will become more important as Americans go back to renew their driver’s license and realize the old method of renewal will not work anymore. According to the REAL ID Act:Starting January 22, 2018 "passengers with a driver's license issued by a state that is still not compliant with the REAL ID Act (and has not been granted an extension) will need to show an alternative form of acceptable identification for domestic air travel to board their flight". Starting October 1, 2020 "every air traveler will need a REAL ID-compliant license, or another acceptable form of identification, for domestic air travel."[6]As of December 2017, 28 states and territories have been certified as compliant, and 28 have been granted extensions or are under review. [7]This means that all state driver’s license need to be REAL ID compliant by 2020.I’m assuming everyone will need to obtain a birth certificate from the county of their origin to obtain the new I.D/Driver’s License. This will be a shock to the system for many Americans who have moved away from their birth county. The process will be tedious and time consuming for many, but people who fly or drive will get their license in time. Those who don’t (people who use public transportation and who don’t fly) will be caught flat footed.Since driver’s licenses are the main form of I.D. used for voter identification, I’m guessing 2020 will be a down year for voter participation. Generally, my experience in transportation engineering has shown me that Democrats like public transportation more than Republicans.REAL ID Act - Wikipedia

Why are Democrats against Voter ID laws?

The Florida voter purge has nothing to do with ID. Instead of requiring everyone to prove US citizenship, only people on a list approved by the governor were to be purged for being so called illegals. it is not legal to create a purge list like this unless it can be shown to not have a bias based on age, race, party affiliation, sex or similar criteria. The decision as to whether the list meets the criteria is made by the US Attorney Generals office, not the governor. He did not go through the proper procedures called out in the Voting Rights Act. When the voting examiners started contacting people on the list they found a large number to be citizens. Did the Governor know the list was flawed? did he care? The voting examiners have just tossed the list out saying no one will be purged. Illegals will not be allowed to vote should they try whether they are on the registered voters list or not. it is not the governors job to try and rig the voting system, even in Florida he has no authority to disenfranchise anyone. That is a task only done by the voting examiners, which they have done quite well without outside interference by politicians.

Voter ID is another issue. what makes you think dead people don't have driver licenses? point being the new crop of laws do nothing to actually stop organized fraud. the only purpose is to try and suppress voting by qualified electors. In fact until very recently, the idea of a national ID card was considered socialism by those very same Republicans. That is why before 9/11 anyway, very few americans that did not travel on passports had any ready documentation as to citizenship status. This is new, it is not business as usual. The time to control fraud is in compiling the registration lists, not when standing in line to vote. And yes, there are already Federal standards requiring that voter registration lists be checked by several methods for ineligible status, including those lists in Florida, new laws are redundant.

no one is pushing to allow illegals to vote, perhaps your idea of illegal is anyone with brown skin. please be advised that not all illegal immigrants come from Mexico, plenty come from Ireland and other countries on tourist visas and forget to leave. illegals know who they are and not likely to do anything stupid, like vote, if it exposes their status.

Why is Obama so against voter ID laws?

Are Democrats losing minority voters?

The GOP would certainly like you to believe this but there is little evidence, not that that means much anymore. Don't confuse minority votes for Democrats with minority votes for Hillary, whose numbers in that regard were disappointing. But I would also caution against assuming, as the GOP does, that their free market "bootstrap mentality" will appeal to people who have traditionally supported strong government programs that have served them well in the past. For Democrats, the problem among minority voters remains not ideology, or even personality as in 2016, but getting people to vote.

How are voter id laws discriminatory, controversial, and not required?

Although it seems to make sense that you would want to minimize voter fraud with voter ID laws, the number of voters prevented from voting by these laws exceeds estimates of related voter fraud by multiple orders of magnitude. It can be likened to killing flies in your house with a shotgun. One comprehensive study found only 31 accusations (accusations — not necessarily proven) of voter fraud over more than 1 billion votes since 2000, which might have been prevented by voter ID laws. This compares to the 4 states with the most draconian voter ID laws where over 3,000 people were rejected for not having “acceptable” ID. That doesn’t count people who simply stayed at home because they knew that they would be unable to satisfy the laws. Some people have spent months (even with the support of lawyers) navigating the barriers to obtaining problems that originated with things like typos in their birth certificates or having their name changed unofficially (e.g. when their mother remarried). The Washington Post has a pretty well researched article on the Federal Court’s criticism of the North Carolina law, which it said, targeted the black vote “with almost surgical precision“. North Carolina actually argued in court that it’s justification for the clause banning Sunday voting was that "counties with Sunday voting in 2014 were disproportionately black" and "disproportionately Democratic". Legislators also used racial statistics to determine which types of ID to accept and which ones to reject.

Why do Republicans want Voter-ID laws?

The laws are written by Republicans and are specifically designed to allow the types of ID that Republican voters would have but exclude IDs that Democratic voters would have. For example, the voter ID laws in many states specifically exclude student IDs, while specifically allowing gun permits and passports to be used. Students tend to vote Democrat, while gun owners and people rich enough to travel abroad tend to vote Republican. Driver’s licenses are another example. Very poor people often cannot afford cars, and people who live in cities often do not have cars because parking is very limited and expensive. Both of these tend to take public transportation, and have no need for a driver’s license. Note that a drivers license costs an annual fee, around $40/year in most states, so having a drivers license just so you can vote once every four years amounts to a $160 fee to vote. No state that requires photo ID has made it free and easy to get one. Even when they are technically free, the places you need to go to get one are always deliberately hard and expensive (using public transportation) to get to. The voter ID laws are deliberately made to suppress the votes of people who vote Democrat, and the people who wrote them have no intention of making it easy for those people to vote.

Why are voter ID laws so controversial? Assuming that state issued photo IDs are made easy to procure, then what's the problem?

They aren’t. Voter ID laws are only controversial in the United States. In Canada, the Netherlands, Germany, Northern Ireland, Israel and most other Western democracies, it is accepted by virtually everyone, from all political persuasions, that for the integrity of the voting system and the trust in democracy, all voters must produce a valid form of ID to vote. In these (progressive) countries, the notion that someone does not need an ID to vote is absurd and would be seen as a threat to democracy. However, when you travel south of Canada to the United States, this is a divisive political issue. Why? Because both parties refuse to accept the obvious solution to the problem for political purposes. The obvious solution is to require everyone to produce an ID in order to vote and also make it really really easy for all eligible voters to get an ID.In Canada, I can vote with*:my driver’s licensea provincial ID cardAny other government issued ID card with my photo and address. If that doesn’t work for me, I can show two of dozens of possible identification including things like my student ID card, my credit and debit cards, library cards, cheques, utility bills etc..This system works well because if you can’t meet these conditions, you probably can’t vote and if you can meet these conditions, you probably can vote. These conditions are so easy to meet that I probably meet these conditions at all times, in multiple ways and so do most other people. Now, why do Republicans favour current voter ID laws? Because it helps them. Plain and simple. Statistics show us over and over again that although the biggest difference in voter ID possession is economic status, not race, race is a big statistical difference here and it favours Republicans. Why do Democrats want no voter ID laws? Because it helps them. Democrats know that more of their voters don’t have IDs compared to Republicans. Having no voter ID laws would bring out more of their voters.Let’s make something clear. Politicians have one guiding principle. Winning. It doesn’t matter how nonsensible a policy may be. If it helps their party win, politicians, from every party, will favour any policy that helps them get elected. By contrast, your opponent not winning helps you win. Therefore, you can rest assured that obvious solutions to problems, like this one, simply won’t happen because of partisanship.*You also need to register to vote which can be done online.

Where will Obama make up the loss of the illegal vote now that the Supreme Court upheld voter ID laws?

He doesn't have to. They will give him the votes voluntarily. He never had to cheat. You ever seen a football stadium filled? And i noticed one of you finally admit the voter suppression is targeted at the minorities white boy. You cant hide behind brother too much longer. The law will be declared unconstitutional but he will win by default. No one wants what y'all are peddling. and shoveling. With that type of stuff, you will need a shovel. Merry Christmas.

Why do some people oppose voting ID laws?

I'll give you a reason I oppose voter ID laws and it has nothing to do with immigration. There are many elderly African Americans that are and always have been legal citizens that were born in the Jim Crow South who’s families moved to northern cities or to the coasts to get away from southern segregation and bigotry. These people are now venerable, some with not many living relatives and no connections to their original states of birth since they have been gone 40+ years.Back in the Jim Crow segregated South, black people were treated as second class citizens. Many people apparently don't realize this, but segregation wasn't just about sitting in the back of the bus, using separate restrooms, schools, water fountains and lunch counters. Another ramification of it was separate systems for records in places like hospitals which were also segregated. Many southern black people during this time, especially ones born in rural areas, simply cannot find or possibly don't even have some of these legal documents like birth certificates, because of the legalized segregation of the time. There are plenty of elderly black people from this era that don't even know their real date of birth.Asking an 80+ year old person now living on a fixed income to travel across the country to a place they haven't been for 40+ years to find a document that might not even exist, is facetious and basically just being used as a dirty trick loophole to create voter suppression. It's just a modern day version of Jim Crow.Voter ID laws are just another underhanded tactic, like gerrymandering, used by the GOP to gain an advantage. The GOPs Attack on Voting Rights Was the Most Under-Covered Story of 2016
