Ok So I Got A Old Gateway. Im Usually Pretty Good With Computers But When I Opened My Word Document

What do you do to ensure that your computer is regularly maintained and tuned-up for peak performance?

OK, OK, as a techie, I'll cop to being a little derelict as regards my personal computer. But I usually run Frankenstein machines that are pieced together from other people's junk, with slight performance mods.

However, what I recommend and do with any computer that I service:

First and foremost, a physical cleaning at least twice a year. Open the case and blow out the dust. Most systems I service with performance problems have dust and blocked vents as a major performance issue. Check to see that all cards, memory and drive cables are properly seated (make sure the power is disconnected and drained and that you are properly grounded to the machine before doing this).

At these semi annual service times, remove all unnecessary software and programs. Remove items from the start menu that are unneeded. Too many start menu items use up system resources, and because they run in the background you usually don't see them.

Empty temporary Internet files. Minimize the number of toolbars you run on your browser. Check around and find out which browsers use fewer resources, especially if you are running an older machine.

On this semi annual clean you also want to defragment your hard drive and run error checking. If you have questions on how to do this, you can do a search for the answers either on the Internet or by using Windows' "Help and Support" feature.

On a weekly basis, run your antivirus/antispyware software. Make sure to update your software everytime you run it, either by directly connecting to the Internet, or if that is not possible by downloading from a connected machine and installing manually. Antivirus/antispyware updates are crucial, as new threats pop up daily. A good registry cleaner doesn't hurt as well.

If running a Windows machine, do Automatic Updates. You can set this a few different ways. As a techie, I have it download and install it later, usually waiting to see if others report performance problems. I then install after the performance issues have been fixed.

If you take care of your computer it can last a long time. Hopefully these tips will help you in doing so.

Can I replace my computer's graphics card?

As others have said, given the information you've given us, its pretty hard to say yes or no.Question 1: Is it a laptop or desktop? If its a laptop, the answer will be NO NO NO NO NO. Did I mention you can't upgrade laptop gpu's? Ok, well, techincally its possible, but considering you're asking this question (no offense), its a definite no. If we're talking about a desktop, most likely, yes. The first order of business is to check your power supply. Considering the fact that you've told us that you're not very tech savvy, I'm assuming you have a pre-built computer. Pre-built computers generally = crappy power supply. I suggest you also post pictures of your power supply including the label. Make sure the wattage is included. While not very common, a bad power supply can destroy your entire system. It looks like your computer is more of an entry-level one so I'll assume the the capacity of the PSU (Power Supply) is around 300-450 watts. While you won't be slapping a Titan X in it anytime soon, there are alot of low-power GPU's to choose from. The first thing that comes to mind is NVIDIA's 900 series which is running off the Maxwell architecture. One of the main selling points of the Maxwell architecture is its power efficiency. You'd probably best be served by a GTX 950 which ranges from $150-175. There's also the 750ti which is about $125-150 and is another low-energy card. The graphics card is probably the easiest part to install in a computer. Most computers have at least one PCI-E slot like this:The PCI-E slot is the top, dark blue one. the bottom slot is a PCI slot.Don't worry if your computer's slot doesn't have the tab at the end, that's simply a locking mechanism for added support but is not integral to the functioning of the card. I HIGHLY recommend also researching a bit more into the subject yourself. You'll find its not really that complicated. If anything, building a computer is like playing with a big, expensive set of Leggos. Good Luck!

Can someone explain how to play Hack RUN to me? I want to get into it but i cant even get past level 3?

When you type 'help', the 'help' menu comes up:
(e)xit
(h)elp
(l)s
(t)ype

To read the files, you have to list the files first [type 'ls']. You'll see something like this:
File list:
readme lk -rw wwr r-x

There's a file called 'readme'. To open it, type 'type readme'. And yes, you need to include the 'type'.

And thats how you beat level 3. I won't say anything else, because you'll get the hang of it.
I wish you luck :)

Edit: Btw this is how you open all files. As you proceed through the game, you'll find more files than just 'readme'.

As an IT professional, have you ever found adult content on someone’s work computer?

Sadly, yes.I say sadly because the one time I found something like that, it was beyond adult content. It was evidence of child pornography.Without naming anything specific, I was going through the Friday routine of erasing/reimaging computers for either reuse or refuse. I always checked the personal files to ensure that we weren’t losing any secure files that might be needed later on.At the time, we were limited on storage which is why we didn’t just perform a mass copy of all files. Space was a premium so I only saved files that seemed important, per my supervisor’s instructions. If I ever had questions, I would ask him, he would vote yay or nay, and I would either copy the file or erase it.In this case, I found a hidden file deep in his user profile that was taking up a lot of space. If it hadn’t been such a large file, I might have missed it.When I opened it, I gaped for two seconds, closed the laptop, carried to my supervisor’s office, closed the door, and said “Ok. What do I do if I find evidence of a possible felony or felonies?”He stared at me for a few seconds and said “Who’s machine is it?”I said, “The departing CFO.”He said, “How bad?”I said, “If I had to guess, I’d say he’s going to jail for the rest of his life.”Then, I passed him the laptop. He opened it and clicked through a few files as the corners of his mouth got lower and lower. He reached over to his phone and dialed the company lawyer. Keep in mind, our lawyer was more of a contract lawyer than a criminal lawyer but she was in the office within seconds. She looked over his shoulder and started taking notes. After some questioning, she wrote up and had both of us sign an affidavit to report exactly what happened and how it was discovered. After that, she contacted the police. They arrived quickly and took our statements.Once the investigation started, it was discovered that this was only part of a larger child pornography ring in the city.Further, it was discovered that it wasn’t our previous CFO who did this.It was his 25 year old son who cracked into his father’s work laptop to store the files.Needless to say, I’ve been rather vigilant about personal files since that ordeal.
