Okay This Is Really Starting To Bother Me Now What Is That One Song By A Band That Goes Something

Where do you stand about rock songs used for TV Commercials?

This has been discussed before, but I'm not sure in how long. I figured I'd ask this current wave of users.

It's a couple of questions-

1) the one in the title-

2) Most of the songs used are older ones from the 60s- 80s. (*lots* of 70s I noticed)

This latest Walmart one really annoys me:

There's another for 21st Century Insurance that uses this one:

The question is- if you're not a classic rock fan, (& that's ok!) how do you think you'd feel if in 20 years, your favorite *current* bands' songs were used in tv ads?

As for me- it mostly bugs me. I think it kinda takes away from the power & legacy of the songs. Sorta cheapens them, imo.

On the other hand, I realize that in many cases, the artists themselves are the ones who handed over the songs to use & probably could use the $$. I can sort of understand that w/ artists who didn't reach the heights of say, guys like Zeppelin or The Beatles.

But when I see Target using "Hello/Goodbye" & Cadillac using "Rock & Roll", hmm...no real excuse for it I think.

Do you just hate it when a person wears band shirts of bands that they don't listen to?

I can recall a time I went into an Urban Outfitters to get a couple of plain t-shirts. When I went up to the checkout counter, the girl who worked there had on a Led Zeppelin shirt. Sweet! I thought. It just so happened that I was deep in my Zeppelin phase at the time and couldn’t stop listening to I, II, and IV.“What’s your favorite album?” I asked. And she said, “Oh, I’m not sure. I don’t really listen to them. My dad just had this shirt, so I took it from him.”You can imagine my disappointment.Another example would be my sister. My older sister enjoys “recreational” activities. Me and her have a good relationship where we text each other often and see each other regularly. One day she texted me,“I’m getting a Jimi Hendrix shirt. Can you help me pick a good one?”Hmm. I thought. “Can you even name a song by Jimi Hendrix?” I asked.“No,” she said. “But he’s a bad-ass guitar player.”“What about all those times I tried to sit you down and get you to actually enjoy his stuff?” I piped back.“I don’t like it. It sounds…old. Everything’s off. The drums sound weird,” she said.Despite that, sure enough, a few weeks later, I see my sister walking around her condo in her Jimi Hendrix shirt. You can imagine how annoyed I was.Long story short, I totally agree that people who wear shirts of bands they don’t know are just doing it for the image that comes with it. It’s annoying, frustrating, and reduces something genuinely meaningful to someone to just an image. What can you do about it? Scold them amicably, and move on. There are enough people out there who’d agree with you and do the same. Eventually, the poser might get the message and play a track or two.

Why does anyone like the band Radiohead? I can't name one of their songs. I have tried listening to random offerings of theirs and haven't found anything I could stand for more than a minute.

Perhaps “listening to random offerings of theirs” doesn’t do their music enough justice. This method works fine for many pop bands, because pop music is made for easy, accessible enjoyment. Pop bands often write singles which can be listened to independently of each other, and their albums are essentially compilations of those singles. However, Radiohead hasn’t been a pop band since their debut work. They make concept albums, in which each constituent song ties into a greater theme. Their albums are like books, where randomly starting with the fifth chapter is confusing and meaningless. For instance, listening to “Treefingers” (the fifth track off of Kid A) on its own is incredibly boring because that just isn’t the song’s purpose. The song is a beautiful, ambient interlude which acts as a transition from the hopeless, depressed first half of the album to the uplifting, optimistic second half. In fact, the next song is titled “Optimistic”, which further suggests how their albums are like stories. The important idea to take away is that a Radiohead song often requires context—namely the rest of its album. If you lack the patience to listen to an entire album, then maybe Radiohead isn’t for you (this isn’t a blow at anyone—listening to albums is time consuming and involved. There’s a reason why most people prefer throwing on pop in the background: it’s easy). If you are willing to give one of their albums a go, consider starting with a more accessible one, such as OK Computer or In Rainbows (they are vastly different from one another but I’m listing both as I don’t know your taste). If you are insistent on listening to singles, then here is one accessible suggestion from each album:“Blow Out” - Pablo Honey (1993)“Street Spirit” - The Bends (1995)“Karma Police” - OK Computer (1997)“How to Disappear Completely” - Kid A (2000)“Knives Out” - Amnesiac (2001)“There, There” - Hail to the Thief (2003)“Jigsaw Falling into Place” - In Rainbows (2007)“Lotus Flower” - The King of Limbs (2011)“Decks Dark” - A Moon Shaped Pool (2016)If you end up liking one of these, then maybe give the rest of its album a listen, because again, they are an “album” band not a “single” band. Afterwards, you might end up liking the song even more.If not, then Radiohead probably isn’t for you. That’s of course a normal part of having your own taste.Enjoy!

My brother keeps making fun of a band i like and i feel like he is crushing my dreams. what do i do?

Okay hun. I feel like your reading my life from a book or something. Haha let me guess, your brother is like fifteen or something? well hun in a situation like this what you gotta do is be strong, when he comes to you and says your a retard, dont stoop to his level, just look at him and say no im not. set him straight, obviously hes got his eyes set on the wrong role model. sucks for him, when you guys move out, and your a veterinarian with lots of money and a huge family, and hes working at mcdonalds with a tiny apartment. you can just think to yourself that you were strong through these years. when I went through this, what i did was i went to a different school from him and had my friends bring me up and make me self confident again. It was great. Also you should just avoid him and if he shoves you or something, try not and retaliate hun i know its hard but if his friends are around or something and you just get up and walk away, think of how stupid he'll look. That always helped me:)
but honestly just be strong, shoot for the stars babe! Your gonna go far kid, wishing you the best of luck ;)

People who wear band t-shirts as a fashion statement?

This really gets on my chopper! A while ago my college next door "friend" or I should say an acquaintance I am forced to say "Hi" to because she lives next door to me- who considers herself a bit of a fashion statement, caught sight of my Guns n Roses t-shirt, I must say, I love this shirt because of my long love for Guns n Roses, and the fact that they were one of the first bands I started listening to.

Anyway, back to the shirt, it's a girly shirt actually, not your typical man's band tee, it's made of loose material and it's longish. When she saw it she let out an excited yelp and said "Oh I've got to have that t-shirt!"

I think I said something like, nice one! You're a fan then? and obviously it turned out that she wasn't.

Isn't that just the worst, I mean if you're going to wear it you might as well support or at least know the band? and I don't mean:

-"Oh, Welcome to the jungle is my favorite song, I totally love Guns"
-"Oh yea? what other songs?"
-"...They have other songs?..."

Why do some consider the beatles a boy band?

this is something that has always bothered me,with the exception of the fact that they were young and good looking like all the boy bands of the 90's and 2000's,that's where the similarities end.the beatles actually wrote their own songs and played their own instruments, unlike a lot of these manufactured boy bands.come on michael jackson paid 47 million dollars for the beatles back catalog(something i'll never forgive him 4),can you actually see someone paying that much for any of the back catalogs of any of these boy bands or even all of them?

Why does everyone think Nickleback sucks?

Nickelback kicked serious *** up until and during the Silver Side Up era. That is when their music caught on with the masses. This is also when they completely changed. Instead of being the kickass rockers that they once were, they instead chose to divert all their attention to just becoming more famous. They changed their sound. They started playing for the industry instead of for themselves is how I like to put it. They wrote generic pop songs like "Photograph" and "Far Away". They started putting less thought into their albums overall and coming out with one seemingly one after the other. The creativity they once had was gone. Some of that creativity (I will give credit where credit is due) can still be found in the direction of their music videos. Even if the song sucks, the video is sometimes pretty cool.
Plain and simple. They sold out. The reason it reminds you of Bon Jovi's later stuff is because Bon Jovi is a hair metal musician. Success to them was selling out, and that's what they all tried for. So, if that's what Nickelback are attempting (which it seems to be), then they accomplished it.
