Personally I do think that cost should be a key consideration in picking a master's degree program, when you consider that most of us who get master's degrees are doing it to reach a specific career goal. All those kids out there in the Occupy movement who are complaining about having $100,000. in college debt would be a whole lot better off if they had only $20,000. in debt, but most of them didn't give a ton of thought to whether or not their degree was a good "buy" when they started school. I realize most of them are talking about bachelor's degrees, but the same holds true for grad degrees. It's really easy to pay so much that you'll grow old before realizing much of a benefit, at least on the salary front.Obviously some of the comments on this string are correct that you don't want to shop schools only on the basis of cost. Accreditation, school reputation and how well a particular program fits your needs are terribly important. In terms of the available options in lower cost online masters degrees, there's a mix of schools out there who have made an effort to provide affordable grad programs online. I'm not a big believer in state university systems here, because many of them have run into trouble with online degree programs that they did not commit to fully, and are not really up to speed technologically. A few state schools have, however, separated themselves from the pack in online education and offered less expensive programs.
