One Letter As A Nickname For Someone

Is a nickname in a letter of recommendation a problem?

If your nickname is a commonly recognized one (like "Bill" instead of "William" or "Ted" instead of "Edward," you will have no problem at all. It would be nice if the supervisor had written out your full legal name in the introductory paragraph ("I'm writing to support the application of Fredrick G. Wimbledon for entry into law school.") then go on to use your nickname ("Fred is actually Superman in disguise") but most people don't know enough to handle it that way. It is for this reason that we all sit through composition classes and English literature -- details matter in written work. The only problem you will face is if your nickname is not one which can easily be connected to your legal name (You are "Eugene," but everyone calls you "Red") and the supervisor failed to mention your family name anywhere in the letter. In that case, you have a couple of choices. One is that you can explain that his wonderful letter, for which you are eternally grateful, might get misdirected, and could he please send another copy with your legal name mentioned. Another is to write to the school yourself and explain the situation. A third is to do nothing and let the chips fall where they may. In all likelihood, since they deal with letters of recommendation all the time, they will be able to figure it out. And if your file ends up one letter short, they may contact you to ask about it, at which time you can take action.

With just a name and zip code, can you get a letter to someone?

Yes and no...and no.A five-digit ZIP Code is more or less a crapshoot.  If you're me, with a unique name and someone who talks to the folks at the Post Office whenever I have business to the point that most of them know me, there's a pretty good shot that mail will get to me, regardless.  Someone will find it and redirect it to me.Where the chances go up dramatically is the name and the ZIP+4.  Those each map to either a Post Office Box or (if I remember correctly) no more than ten lots on the same side of a street.  So, unless you live next door to people with the same name, the Post Office used to say that they'd deliver with just a last name and a ZIP+4.However, with what's more or less a failure to convince people to use the ZIP+4 routinely (seriously, do you know yours?), the Post Office isn't really as geared to using them as they were twenty to thirty years ago.  Instead, my understanding is that they now use computers to recognize the written address and try to match it to their records; that's then encoded on the barcode that you see on pretty much everything they deliver to your house. So, there's still a chance the computer will figure out your house, but five digits probably aren't nearly enough and I'd bet on needing your carrier to recognize your name.

Do you need a name to mail a letter?

You can drop mail in a mailbox anywhere without posting a name and return address. However, this is highly frowned upon in this day and age where the mentally ill send powder packages, illegal materials and the like sent through the mail. This could cause investigations on the receiving end, if something suspicious is found to be in the package. And it is likely the receiving party will be able to identify the identity of the friend who sent it.

Cool 6-letter-max nicknames? (:?

I need a cool preferably one word nickname, with a maximum of 6 letters. They don't need to do with my name - just like an english word which sounds cool lol. Words a bit like Lunar, Cosmic, Infinity, Sonic, but a less common one maybe, well doesn't have to be. Long as it a one word , with exceptions i guess, and a max of 6 letters. Give me as many examples as more then 1 would be appreciated ^^

Can I name my child using only one letter?

That's sort of ridiculous.

I don't know if it's legal, but either way it is an awful idea. Your child deserves a good, proper name, and there are so many nice names out there to choose from!

Think about it - would you have liked to be named "L"?

I misspelled a name by one letter on an international flight ticket for ANA airways from Tokyo to San Francisco. Will I be allowed to board the flight?

A couple of years ago, I booked ticket to France for my family. I used an online consolidator and got great fares on Delta. One of the names was misspelled by one letter. I called the consolidator within an hour or two of booking and paying for the tickets. After about 20 minutes of being transferred and put on hold, I was told that I’d have to contact the airline.I called Delta. After another 20 minutes, I was told that only the consolidator could make the change. I called the consolidator back, and got a similar answer. I emailed both the airline and the consolidator,I made a long trip to the airline ticket counter a month before the flight in the hopes that a face to face encounter would help. It didn’t.A customer service person from the consolidator finally told me that he could cancel all of the tickets and try to rebook them, but that it was extremely unlikely that I’d get the same fare or itinerary. He finally advised me just to go the airport and hope for the best.I spent many hours trying to get that one letter changed with no success. On the day of our departure, we presented our passports and tickets at the ticket counter, to the TSA thugs, and to the gate agents. None of them commented on the misspelling either coming or going.I literally spent weeks worrying about the error, countless hours trying unsuccessfully to fix it, and in the end it didn’t matter.

Can you have a single letter as a legal first name?

Mr. T, of 1980s fame (Rocky III, The A Team, etc.), legally changed his name from Laurence Tureaud to Mr. T. He was fond of saying his first name was “Mr,” his middle name “.” and his last name “T.” In most states you can change your name to just about anything. I know of a man who legally changed his name to Trout Fishing in America as a homage to Richard Brautigan’s titular novel. In short, I’m pretty sure the answer is yes, at least in the United States.
