One Of Your Customers On Your Newspaper Route Is Cheap With Her Tips. Do You Ever Toss Her Morning

Christmas bonus for newspaper deliverer?

My boyfriend delivers newspapers at night. Its the 1st time he has done something like this, but the guy who bags his papers next to him told him that they put christmas cards in the newspapers around thanksgiving time, with a note that says if you wish to send a bonus, not to send it to the company. And he also said he includes an envelope with a return address on it. He does around 300 papers 7 days a week, and over 450 on Sundays. Has any ones paper guy given a christmas card. Should a tip even be mentioned? And how much do you usually tip your paper guy if you don't tip regularly, just on christmas. Ive gone with him and the route takes over two hours, plus he drives half an hour away and half an hour back just to get the papers. The money isn't bad but i wouldn't say its exactly worth it, the job is alot of work, in the middle of the night, alot of gas, and its getting cold out. Is a christmas tip expected and how should we go about putting these cards in the papers. And what should they say? I want to help him do this right, so he doesn't make any of his customers mad.

What is an appropriate Christmas tip for a newspaper carrier?

I have been a paper carrier for the last 19 years, and I'm going to e very honest. I pay attention to who is a good tipper, who is a great tipper, and who never tips. With newspapers constantly trying to reduce their overhead, by skipping equipment maintenance and buying poorer quality unprinted newsprint, the quality of the papers is suffering. My great tippers ($50.00 a year or more) NEVER get a torn paper. Their paper is always in a bag, and if they have special requests I do my very best to accommodate. My good tippers ($20 to $45 year) always get their papers in a bag, and I do search out good papers for them as well if I can. My non-tippers get what's left. I don't do this to be mean...nothing makes me happier than an easy day with un-torn papers...but because tipping should matter. Please remember that I absorb all the costs of delivery: my vehicle, my insurance, my gas, and I also have to buy the bags and rubber bands. I wish I made 20 cents a paper like the one guy said...13 cents per paper is what I'm paid and they're trying to knock that down to 11 cents. Add in the cost of bags, gas, etc., to get the papers to my customers everyday and I can promise you that tipping is often how I show a profit. Anyone who has ever done a service job understands that you are more likely to try harder when appreciation is shown. Compliments are nice, but a good tip makes all the difference. Also, for the people who think it's "tacky" to ask for a gift please understand, this isn't a "GIFT", it's a TIP, one that I am up at 12:30 am, 7 days a week to EARN. Your waiter or waitress spend 30 minutes to an hour serving your food, and expects a 15% tip, which you also expect to pay. Your paper carrier is out in every kind of weather, every day of the year and you think $5 is a good tip...for the WHOLE YEAR. You might want to rethink that, and see if your paper service improves.

What is the cheapest thing that you've seen someone do?

I used to live with seven girls in a two bed room apartment in Michigan, USA. There were two girls Avanthi and Lakshmi who were very stingy and they always try to take things without paying for them.I was the last to join the girls in the apartment. The day I arrived, in the evening these two girls asked me to come to CVS with them. I went with them as I also needed some things and didn’t understand why other girls refused to come and also they were giggling. They told me to be careful and all and I ignored them thinking what would happen at CVS that would put me in danger.Reached CVS and was looking around. I came to cosmetics sections and I see these girls painting their nails, then and there itself . My eyes literally popped out with shock. went to them and asked what they were doing. They said they are using ‘try me’ bottles. I tried to argue with them that it’s to test on one finger nail and that you don’t sit there and apply to all nails. They didn’t listen and didn’t move from there either. They also tried acting as if they are looking around so that they can apply second coat as well. I got scared and moved away from them. I was literally in the opposite side of the store, took things I wanted and checked out without even looking at them. I walked/ran back to the apartment as if there was a ghost chasing me from behind. I was scared and sweaty.I came back to my apartment with shocked and scared look on my face and the other girls were smiling at me saying now you understand why we didn’t go with them. I was angry at first because I also might have got into trouble because of them but then smiled along with them. Some other things these two girls used to doChange the tags on dresses they want with cheaper ones. They look for the ones that have sticky tags.Go to candy section in Walmart and eat candy directly without taking them in a cup and paying for it.Walmart near our apartment used to have bakery section. They order from bakery. Go to isolated isles, eat it off and put the cover in some aisle there and not pay for it.They were always doing these things so all the other girls Justin stopped going anywhere with them.Edit : Looks like some people are having trouble with 8 people living in 2 bed room house and are blaming and being rude to me. Our consultancy put us there when it was training us in SQL and BI. The owner of the house is head of consultancy. So stop talking as if we signed some lease and got people illegally into the house.

Did One ever have a part time job as a teenager delivering newspapers?

Actually, my little brother had a paper route. He was also in scouts, and sometimes went on a camping trip over the weekends. Now and then, he was sick, and in bed. At all these times, Mama made me deliver all the papers. Money? I never got any money. When I asked, Mama said it was my brother's route, so he got the profits. Fair? I didn't think so, but Mama thought it was only right, so that's the way it was.

I often said, there are 2 ways to do anything. Mama's way and the wrong way. That rule applied here.

When I got to be 15 or 16 I began babysitting for families in our neighborhood. 50 cents per hour, and 75 cents per hour after midnight. That was the going rate back then.

Newspaper carriers many people do not care about them?

My daughter took the job of delivering newspapers to make ends meet when her husband was out of a job and she couldn't afford a babysitter.
She was paid per newspaper even with 3 routes she was making maybe 200 a month.
She had to buy with that money the plastic sleeves and even the rubber bands! They were sold at the office for more money than than at Office Max for the same items!!
She had to be up at 4am in the morning and fold them for an hour and if it was raining put them in sleeves. Then she would take her new van and do stop and go's in the cold and the dark .. the rain and the fog. Half the porches were not lit so you couldn't see the address if you tried.
Some people demanded they be exactly on the porch, in a mail box, or on a particular part of the driveway.
There are no days off, no holidays, no vacations and no benefits.
If you were sick you had to find someone else to deliver your papers you try to think straight when you have a fever.
The newspaper office bills the customers because too many kids were getting knocked down and robbed of the money by cheap hoods and gangs. Changing delivery from late afternoon delivery to morning really stops any teen from delivering on their bikes unless they own a car.
So its really hard to get to know the customers between 4:30-6am most are not even up at that time!
Eventually newspapers will just be delivered by the mailman or picked up at newstands. Home delivery should be a thing of the past its just a totally thankless job for little money.
Totally understand where your coming from!

If you were a server in a restaurant and your customer did not tip you, would you chase them outside of the restaurant and confront them for that?

When I was serving in college, We would routinely have about 8+ tables per server. During happy hour (it was college after all), things would get extraordinarily busy.I never cared if someone didn't tip me if they were in and out quickly and easily. Heck, I didn't even care if I was stiffed on a bigger table that just drank pitchers all night because it wasn't a big inconvenience to drop off a pitcher or two when making my rounds. There was one time I got super pissed at a customer though. It was a two-top, paying separately. One customer I don't even recall. If he was as dissatisfied as the jerk, I never would have known it. But the jerk is the point of this story. So when you're slammed as a server, you do your best to bring everyone what they need as quickly as you can. This customer asked for extra sauce. No, another extra sauce. They needed a refill on their drink. And each time I happily complied, I got the worst attitude from him, like I'd kicked him in the shin the day before. I honestly did my best to bring him what he needed while also serving 40 other people. I don't think my service was bad. I was attentive and accurate, I just wasn't fast because, you know, 40 other customers. So they ask for their checks and I settle them out. The annoying customer paid with cash, which was another hassle. There was one drawer to make change from and about 12 servers use that same drawer so when it's busy, all the small change has already been used. His bill was $8.45. I did not bring him the full $11.55 change from his $20, which was common to do at this restaurant, because finding and making change was such a difficult task for the servers. Generally we rounded to the closest quarter because who tips less than a quarter? I brought him back his change from a $20: a five dollar bill, six singles, and two quarters.I visit the table a little while later, as they haven't left yet. This guy wants his nickel. The one I shorted him. He did not want me to have his $0.05 either out of spite, or poor service, or to make some grand point. My head was about to explode because this guy was such a pain in the ass and so rude, so I grabbed a handful of quarters out of my apron and tossed them on the table and asked them to excuse themselves from the table as others were waiting to take it.It was the best. So cathartic.TL;DRAbsolutely not, unless you straight up piss that server off in the process.

What can I learn in one minute that will be useful for the rest of my life?

You’re texting someone, or just typing on your mobile and, as usual, you make a spelling mistake. Now, if you want to correct your mistake, you place the cursor in between the word to add or remove letters. But most of the time, it doesn’t fall into the right position and you end up erasing the word and retyping it. Instead, place the cursor between the word and slide your finger on the spacebar of the keyboard, towards the left or right. It’ll fall into position easily.Your’e taking a picture of some important stuff, for example some information from your text book. Your phone’s out of memory? Keep your phone’s camera over that note, and instead of taking a picture, take a screenshot. While camera pictures consume 7–8 MB storage memory, a screenshot takes a few KB of storage. You have a picture/ screenshot of something to share and you don’t want everything on the picture to be visible to the person you’re sending it to.(For example, quora doesn’t allow you to post personal information/ reveal a persons name etc). And your phone doesn’t have inbuilt editing. Turn on airplane mode. Go to Instagram stories. Choose pen option, edit out whatever you want and save picture (arrow pointing downwards on the bottom of the screen.) It’ll be in your gallery now. (Airplane mode because, posting it by mistake might become quite embarrassing).Your phone’s battery icon doesn’t show the battery percentage? Scroll down the notification bar. Press and hold the setting’s gear icon. The gear turns and when you let it go, you’ll get a notification saying, “System UI tuner enabled”. Click on settings, scroll down and you’ll have an option called System UI tuner. It has many options. Check them out. (Only for android users)P.S. Works on stock Android. I haven't tested on others.

What is the biggest tip that you have ever received as an employee?

I delivered pizza for Pizza Hut for a year. Typically people would leave a 2 or 3 dollar tip for an average order of $15–25.There was one guy who lived in an apartment complex in a lower income neighborhood in our area who tipped very well. He was known for that, and he wanted to be known for that. One time he paid me a $20 tip for a $17 order.“What do people say about me over at where you work?”“Everyone knows you’re the best tipper,” I replied. He smiled really big. “Oh yeah? Well it’s true.” Then he handed me the $20.I thanked him for his generosity and went on my way. That was my biggest pizza tip up until I got an even bigger one.I think it was an accident. This one wasn't in a wealthy area either. I delivered to a nice apartment complex where I went often, but had never seen this customer before. He was really nice and had a normal order that was delivered on time.He paid in cash, and said, “Keep the change.” It was like a buck extra. I was thinking that the change was the tip, so I was turning around to leave when he said, “Wait a second.”He was gone for like a minute, and I assume that he was looking for more cash. When he emerged, he handed me a zip lock bag full of dimes. “Here you go!”I gave him kind of a blank stare for a second, as I assumed that it was around $20, which was very, even needlessly, generous. Then I thanked him and went on my way. When I got back from that order I bragged to my coworkers about the $20 tip from coins that I had just received. They thought it was cool and everyone started swapping stories about the biggest tips that they had ever gotten. My shift ended late that night, the next day I went down to the bank to use their coin counting machine. As it turns out, the bag of dimes was over $88!Which was awesome. My guess was that the customer didn't know how much money was in the bag, but then again, who knows?
