Only I Am Being Called Out At My Job Others Are Worse. What Recourse Do I Have

How do I get out of a verbally abusive relationship with a mother figure who I fear?

I'm 21, and I am renting from a woman whom I've known for a very long time and considers herself to be my mother. She is very manipulative and wants to control me, and for years I've let her, until recently. She calls me names, sometimes outright, sometimes she tries to act like she is joking. Today, she called me a slut. I know exactly what she is doing, but she is in denial. I know if I said what I want to say, if I told her to leave me alone, then she would want to fight me. I don't believe in myself enough to go against her outwardly. I don't have a good enough job yet to move out and away from her. I hate her so much for the pain she has caused me, I almost wish her to die. I know my fear is what puts me in this cage, but I don't know what to do. I don't have the courage or confidence to stand up for myself.

Is it illegal for your employer to call you names in front of others?

My boss calls me names in front of others when I am at work. I have told him that that is not my name and please do not call me that anymore. He just laughs. I am so hurt by this name calling that I don't want to go to work. It took me 3 months to find a job in the town that I live because employment is really bad at this time. So, I don't want to quit my job. Any ideas on this subject? This has happened three times already. Please help!

Called in sick, 3rd day, need doctors note but have no insurance/money/transportation...

The other answers are incorrect = the employers need the sick note to prove that you are no longer contagious when you return to work. Showing up sick, just PROVES to them that you are sick and need the sick note to prove when you can work and not infest the entire company with your sickness!!

What do you do? If you want to keep your job, you figure out a way to get to an urgent care and pay for the appointment.
- if you are sick for 3 days and are still bad, it's what you should be doing anyway.

How bad is it to call out from work 2 days in a row? (walmart)?

Honestly, if it were me then I'd want to fire you.

Unless you're coughing up a lung or bleeding from your eyes, just go into work. If you're so sick that you really shouldn't be there then someone will tell you to go home and value the fact that you were willing to give it a try.

One of the things people remember about Michael Jordan was his heroics playing for the Bulls when injured. Pansies call in sick. Hard workers give 100% unless others tell them to leave.

What can past employers say about you in a reference check?

Is there any legal recourse if my past employer speaks ill of me to a potential new employer. I know it is mandated that past employers can only answer questions that verify my work history including timeline, salary, etc. but if my old boss (who is notoriously hot headed) speaks badly of me is there any thing I can do?

I am very well trained in my field with previous management experience and certification required of only the higher ups. In this job climate, I am struggling to find work and have been applying for even lower level positions. I have had several interviews that have gone very well. One interview even extended into a luncheon with higher management because they found me so "delightful." After several hours in this particular interview I was assured a follow up within the week after they did their routine reference checks, etc. They called the first two references, no problem. Then after the third check to my hot headed boss, they suddenly stopped calling. Then I got a very curt email indicating that they were not able to offer me a position at this time.

I was suspicious that he had spoken poorly of me after other great interviews had led nowhere, but now I am convinced that he is saying something horrible about me to potential employers. What can I do?

Denied a job after it was offered to me ... now what to do.?

I was offered a job with a firm earlier this week. Was planning on starting on Monday, but was told an hour ago that my background check wasn't up to what they are looking for.

This sucks as I turned down 4 other employment offers this week in accepting this one. Now they're telling me, "My background isn't suitable with them" and my application of employment is not hire-able.

Does that happen to people? I've been out the employment loop for a few years but aren't they suppose to run an background check before giving candidates an offer? Do I have any recourse for time wasted and other employment opportunities not taken because of this?

When did business get this sloppy? I really needed this job, to be hired this week as I'm broke and past due on all my bills.

What could there be in my background to where an employer is willing to take an offer off the table? I've never been in prison/jail, heck I don't even have speeding tickets. I don't do drugs so I know I past the drug test. My credit isn't good but that can't be the case as I've been hired by their competitors. My resume information and dates are accurate.

I was told I would get a letter in the mail next week stating the reason why I didn't past their background but I don't understand, why she just wouldn't tell me over the phone?

I've been denied the job and I don't know what to do. I stopped interviewing this week and I decline 4 solid employment offers. Now, Monday (Xmas week) I have to start all over. This can't be happening! Do I have any recourse at all with this firm?
