What are the components of a college essay introduction?

The introduction is the beginning of an essay. It does the same job for an essay as the topic sentence does for a paragraph. In a paragraph, the topic sentence tells the reader what the subject of the paragraph will be and how it will be developed. In an essay, the introduction, which can be one or two paragraphs, introduces the topic. There are three parts to an introduction: the opening statement, the supporting sentences, and the introductory topic sentence. There are many ways to write an introduction, but it is necessary to include each of the three parts:an opening statement or question that attracts the reader's attention — this is often called "the hook",supporting sentences which link "the hook" to the thesis, anda thesis statement that states the purpose and plan of the whole essay.

Need help writing descriptive essay on first day of college?

Here are some guidelines from an online website. There many others--just google "how to write a descriptive essay" if you want several pieces of information. (Or see sources below)

Once you have written your essay, take it to your teacher for help with grammar and sentence structure, or talk to a counselor about how you might be able to get a tutor.

How to Write a Descriptive Essay

Descriptive essays are often subjective tasks. The first issue at hand is to make sure you know what type of paper you are writing. The descriptive essay is often creative, personal, or simply artistic. Discuss the assignment with your professor or teacher before you begin.

Even though your descriptive essay is more personal than a standard five-paragraph or compare-contrast essay, there is still quite a bit of homework to be done. Here is a list of important rules to follow as your write this essay.

Understand the concept
Do your research
Outline the paper
Write the paper
Re-write the paper
Edit (outside editors)
Descriptive essays rely on their nominal stature. It is more important to use imagery and metaphorical language than scientific data. Descriptive essays are not mathematic entries, nor are they always factual. They are opinions. Consequently, you can try to write and describe anything you desire. You simply have to do it well. As horrible as that sounds, your professors and teachers will tell you the same thing.

Here are some tips to remember when writing your descriptive essay:

Actually describe something
Use concrete and abstract images
Use concrete and abstract ideas
Do not go overboard with adjectives and adverbs
Do not go overboard with similes and metaphors
Give it to someone else to see if your essay actually describes something
While it may seem rather vague initially, sometimes a descriptive essay can be the most liberating and pleasurable essay to write. You are just writing something as you see it. If you can prove and describe an idea or image in language, then you have accomplished your task. Documentation and hard research are not always necessary components (although they may be).

How should I start college admissions essay?? PLEASE HELP ME?

Aloha!

Isn't essay writing super-fantastic!?! ;-) In any case, it strikes me that each child in a birth order faces different experiences. Being a middle child, you may not have gotten as much attention as a first child or as the "baby." I'm not sure if this applies to you, but if it does you might want to try starting there. Think about something you may have done or said -- something that really sticks out in your mind -- when you were trying to get your parent's attention. Or, maybe your older siblings and your younger siblings got into it a lot? Maybe you can think of an idea that has to do with you being in the middle of that?

Really, don't stress too much. I'm sure you'll think of something really clever. I have found that if you just start writing often times things will come to you ... something that will pull it all together well or a great first line. Also, given your topic, don't be afraid to ask your family for help. Maybe if you give them an overview of your idea they might be able to help you with a first line!

I hope I could help in some small way. Good luck!

What is the best introduction for a college essay?

The first step to write an effective introduction for a college essay is to visualize the paragraph as a triangle with the point facing down. This is to show that the introduction paragraph starts off at its most broad and gradually becomes more and more focused. The introduction is the first chance you get to interest and inform your audience about the topic. The introduction is comprised of three parts: the hook, the main points, and the thesis statement. The first part, the hook, should be a way to draw your readers in and to have them read the rest of your essay. Here are some examples of hooks:The rhetorical question. Asking a question that helps draw the readers into the central debate you're discussing can help get their attention.A shocking statement or statistic. Starting with a shocking statement or statistic relevant to your topic can help get the reader's attention. An anecdote. Starting with a short anecdote relevant to your thesis can help draw your readers in.

What is the best way to start out college essays?

You need to have a compelling hook that does three things:1. It signifies that you are different and unique. If you read your first two sentences of your paper and it could apply to anyone in the country- redo your hook.2. It gives a sneak peek into the story but it leaves the reader wanting more. This is how you get your admissions board member to really care about your essay and be invested in you as a person.3. It should be related to an idea that is in the end or toward the end of your paper. I think that this is important because it means your introduction is dually valuable- it serves as a great attention getter and leaves the admissions board member with something to think about after they are done.I've attached my hook (and conclusion) here to illustrate what I mean.Is anybody not ready?" I ask loudly across the room. My audience looks up in anticipation, ink pens hovering over the legal-size paper, ears ready to listen to every complex argument that escapes my mouth. My heart is beating a thousand miles a minute and I take a deep breath, press the start button on my timer, and begin.ConclusionAs I begin my senior year of debate I realize how much it has affected me since that fateful day my freshman year. I will miss high school debate and as I leave to begin the next chapter of my life I have to ask myself a question: "Yash, are you ready?" Debate allows me to decisively answer "YES."I had a lot of people read my essay and give me feedback so that I was sure that my hook was engaging and meaningful. What a good opener for this essay?

Capture the readers' attention with a graphic or descriptive opening line. Impact will vary depending on whether you write in first, second or third person perspective. Consider the property of knives. Compare them to other weapons such as guns. Here are a few examples:

Guns must be aimed and are subject to misfire, they are not easily hidden, often noisy, ammunition is costly and used only once.

Knives, on the other hand, are easily hidden and transported, available in the blink of an eye and deadly silent. Wash them off and they are good as new. Knives also trigger (no pun intended) a primeval fear in everyone.

"I remember the glint of steel ..."
"It's going to be a knife fight, he thought as the two men circled each other warily ..."
"Shadows covered the man in the alley. The only sign of life was the occasional flicker of light against steel, as he sharpened his old knife."

What's a good hook sentence for a college essay...?

She's an amazing woman who is passionate, and a little bit wild.

I like that start, and best of all... it's your words!

I have read hundreds and hundreds of essays, and most start with the same basic sentences. The most interesting and dynamic essays are to the point, honest and positive.

That sentence above would pique my curiousity instantly, and would provide you the opportunity to discuss her attributes and how they captivated you and engaged you as a student to learn beyond her classroom. The sentence would also allow you to set an ambient as well as enthusiastic tone to your essay.

Laughter is good especially when celebrating the positive influence of a teacher upon students.

Good Luck
