Opinions And Stories From People Who Did High School Or College Track

Should I do online high school?

I'm sixteen and a sophomore in high school. I have terrible anxiety, particularly relating to school, and depression mostly stemming from my anxiety.

In school I don't have close friends and am just generally unhappy. My therapist and parents have suggested online high school and I'm really thinking about it, but am hesitant.

I feel like online high school might make me socially awkward because I wouldn't be interacting face to face with people, other than my family, on a day-to-day basis. I just want some other opinions and maybe stories if anyone has shared a similar experience. Thank you!

There have been several transgender girls winning girl's high school state track and field competitions, what is your opinion of this?

In international and NCAA competition, there is a set guideline for the hormonal levels for female (and male - for the purposes of identifying performance enhancement drugs) competitors. So if these transgender athletes have completed their hormone therapy, then they are female athletes. In high school, it’s a different story. There is no such testing programs. So an athlete who are not fully biologically female can compete and given their natural difference in abilities, they can win girl’s competition, and I do not think that is fair. In order for them to compete in girl’s meets, I believe that they have to provide a medical evidence that they have completed their therapy. There are some posters who belittle Bruce for insensitivity. I truly feel that this is a legitimate issue, and and fair question, These posters are not answering the question, but questioning the OP’s intent, without knowing who he is and where he stands. I don’t have ANY problem recognizing other people’s sexual orientation and do not condone any discrimination or social persecution. We had a transgender student in my son’s junior high and high school. I explained to him to the best of my abilities why she chose to be who she is, and why we need to support her choice. I had been a vocal advocate for the transgender rights even when the school district did not giver her the girl’s locker room rights and it made national news. Believing that there is something not fair about transgender athlete in high school competition doesn’t make one a bigot or an insensitive person. This is about fairness, and the advocates of LGBT are using this as a slippery slope to accuse others of being insensitive. The transgender student I was referring to was on the girl’s track team even before she started her therapy regime. The lower limit for transgender therapy is 16, so biologically, she was not fully female. She was not talented, so it was not an issue for most parents, but there were some girls in the district who were relying on their athletic achievements to get to a prestigious schools or get scholarships. There are many girls who have been training their whole lives to compete at the highest level with hopes of becoming a state champion or an NCAA D1 athlete. Having a person who still is mostly biologically male competing with them is not fair. A lot of us here are making a lot of a simple question, and throwing their judgement on other people along the way.

High school students- what is your opinion on open campus?

1. Your stand, are you for open campus or against? And why?

Yes, of course. To me personally it's a wonderful idea because I could do something so much more useful then just sit there staring at the walls in free period, and I don't eat at school so it just wastes more of my time.

2. What are the benefits that you see in having an open campus? Any disadvantages?

Advantages:
Students get more freedom and more responsibility

If a student forgot something at home they can run and get it

I think it's a good way for students to get refreshed, rather than just sitting in a close room for for free periods or just sitting and eating in a cafeteria.

You can go out to eat, in other words your not limited to just the school lunch.

If the requirement is a high GPA then that would certainly push students to go the extra mile so they can leave when they want instead of feeling like there locked in a cage from 7:30 till 2 or however long you high school hours are.

Disadvantages:
Students would most likely not come back to school if it was an open campus, or some would simply run late and cause commotion.

Students who drink/smoke. do drugs, find it as a free pass to get out and do stuff like that, then when returning to school it will cause problems.

It would also cause problems for teacher since they would have to be watching the doors at all times to make sure no suspicious people come in and hurt students, if people are instantly going in and out it would be hard to see who who's coming and going.

Also just keeping track of people would be hard, if the school wanted to find someone or contact them due to some trouble, being an open campus it would be hard to do so

3. How would you get around to the closet restaurant to your school if you had open campus? (car, foot, bike, bus ETC...)

Well if my school had a close restaurant, say between 10-15 min of walking, then I would certainly walk, I can't drive yet :( Even if I could drive, if it were close I would walk.

When I can drive I probably would drive, but sometimes I may decide to walk there with my friends.

What you think about schools?

School is a great idea executed very badly.First let me tell you why it’s a great idea. You get to meet new interesting people, get new friends and experience a lot of things like embarrassment and happinessYou get educatedYou learn to do things without your parents for a whileNow let me tell you why it’s executed badly. It starts early in the morningNobody wants to wake up at 7 or 6 AM. Schools should at least start at 9 or 9:30,for students to wake up,have breakfast perhaps even meditate. It ANNIHILATES creativity and individualityYes yes yes! Believe it or not students also should make choices. Some student may want to learn Psychology instead of Biology or Politics instead of Chemistry. If students choose what they learn then they’ll get motivated to go home and do more research on what they learnt at school. Most of the students will forget most of the things they learn in class, because they don’t care and they don’t need to care.Like come on! Look at this picture from 1900sNothing changed in 100 years! Teach children how to use google to get what you need, teach them how money works, teach them about taxes. These are all the things they will actually use in life.More about what is wrong with school in my previous answer: Murad Shah's answer to Why do many students hate school?

Lets Be Real....College is Too Expensive and potientially a waste of time... Do You Think So?

I'm NOT saying that getting an education is a waste of time...but PAYING thousands of dollars to become stuck with a just a piece of paper in a picture frame is kinda pointless...DEPENDING on your major.

Medical Field seems like a good thing to enter...because there is a demand. Teaching as well..

But everyone doesnt want to cut, poke, or fix people....and others don't want to take the time to teach anyone anything...plus teachers don't get paid as much as they should...(in my opinion)

College cost way too much...other countries offer college for free, as well as free medicare....why cant the US do the same...

I was in college for 3 yrs and left cause I felt that I wasting my money on a something that I didnt need a degree for...I would say Undergrad is pointless...Grad school is where you get the serious education....

Some jobs require a degree, and its understandable why, but most of the others seem pointless...

Just a discussion question...Whats your Opinion

Did you like being homeschooled?

I LOVE being homeschooled. I have been homeschooled for five years now, and it is awesome. You can go at your own pace, rather than being subjected to other student's paces who may be below you intellectually.

I am 15 and I graduated this year, because I have been able to do two years in one, for the last couple years. I am performing at the college level.

Vacationing and taking breaks comes much easier when homeschooling. Also, alot of the "busy work" is cut out.

Since schooling is not a situation of "One size fits all" with homeschooling you can cater alot more to each student, and overall may come out ahead.

I would say there are also cons though. I have talked with homeschoolers who feel like they have no social life. For me, this was not a problem, because I have so many friends that are homeschooling as well, but if there aren't any others out there in your area it can be tough.

Another con is that often parents are not willing to put school first and make it a priority, and so you have kids that "graduate" with not the knowledge of a snail. If these children ever decide to go onto college, acceptance may come harder.

Some parents are just not cut out to be teachers. They don't have the know-how or patience to deal with their children.

"Different strokes for different folks". Homeschooling may work well for some parents and children. Others, it may be the death of them. An honest evaluation of the situation is definitely needed.

I hope this helps! Good luck!

I need a lot of opinions about GED's, ASAP.?

GED=Highschool diploma

There is no distinction between the two in any way later in life. Most of the classes offered to you in highschool are intended to help you do better in college and exceed what is required by the state for a diploma. You know this is true, or there would be no such thing as a GED in the first place.. the test is to insure you have an education equal or better than the states requirements for highschool graduation. I dropped out at age 17 just 3 weeks before the end of my Junior year, and went on to college. My friends where still doing their senior year, when I was attending my freshmen year at college. The key is not to wait to take your GED test. In fact, you can take it while your still attending Highschool... and then ride through your senior year in HS without a care in the world, because you already have a diploma!
