Pain After Hitting Head

Ear pain immediately after hitting head?

About 4 hours ago, I was riding an inner-tube in a wave pool and a wave flipped me backwards and since the water was very shallow, I hit my head on the concrete floor of the pool. I did not loose consciousness at all and felt rather fine when I immediately got up and looked to friends to see if anyone witnessed my amazing wipe out. Normally, I would not think anything of it. However, with the recent news about what happened to Natasha Richardson, I began to worry about head injuries. Within 1 minute or so after the accident, i started to feel pain in my right ear canal when swallowing. The pain has subsided a bit and feels very much like the shooting pain you'd get if you had an ear infection. I have been staying up to make sure that I don't have any other symptoms of head trauma. I am completely coherent - in fact, I'm writing this post myself. I don't appear to have any excessive sleepiness (besides the fact that it's almost 1:30 am). I do not have nausia. I still have an appetite. I don't even have a head ache. I have not had any bleeding or discharge from my ears, nose or eyes. Other than a little soreness in my neck and the mild swallowing pain which is getting better slowly on it's own, I feel good as new. As I said, it's been 4 hours since the injury. I'm afraid to go to sleep and I worry about whether I should seek medical attention immediately or if I can wait since I have none of the tell-tale symptoms of serious head trauma. I'm very tempted to go to sleep at this point and see how I feel in the morning and over the next few days. Since the accident happened in the pool and I did swallow a little chlorine water during the incident, I'm wondering if that could be responsible for my ear pain. If there's a knoledgable person out there who can put my mind at ease and allow me to sleep, I'd appreciate your input. Am I just reading too many news headlines and being paranoid or is there real cause for concern with such a limited set of symptoms at this point.

Pain in neck after hitting head?

Assuming that it just happened? If so, give it a couple of days [could even take a week] and it will feel better.

Since you don't have tingling arms, which would be indicative of a pinched nerve, you just squished your neck.

Don't go crazy trying to stretch it or twist it around. It is bruised and needs to heal. Just look straight ahead and be happy that you don't have a migraine on top of the sore neck.

The best treatment is to put on a moist heating pad or those stick-on heat pads that are disposable. Some people say ice, but on your NECK - who wants ice? unless it just happened heat is the trick. A decent heating pad is worth the couple of bucks vs. cost of Dr. visit.

To give you an example - I once flipped over a bobcat [construction machine]. Hit my head on the roof, I did. Heard the scariest crack you could imagine - like an electric shock through my body. Thought for sure I was not going to be moving my arms & legs. Anyway- I was sore - very sore - for a couple days and now fine ambe me.

Seriously, feel better

Headache and ear pain after hitting water very hard tubing! Help!?

I wa tubing with my friend today and while we went around a huge curve, I flew off and ended up hitting my head very hard on the water! Probably the hardest I have ever hit it. Right after I popped out of the water I could feel intense head pain and nausea. I took a break for twenty minutes and then hopped back on. About six hours later I still have a pounding headache and nausea. Also, both my ears have been a little sore, similar to the pain of an ear infection and I am dizzy. I did not lose conciseness and there is not any discharge coming from my ears. I just need to make sure nothing serious happened! Thanks!

Headaches 4 days after hitting head?

Since this much time is passed and the CT scan was normal you aren't going to die.

That being said, it doesn't get rid of the rest of your problems that were caused by your concussion. I say concussion because what happened to you happened to me. I went to the ER, CT was fine, was sent home told I suffered a fall and all was ok. I was given a list of things to watch out for. I was absolutely normal for about 2 days. Then all heck broke loose. What I found out later was that I had swelling on my brain which until the doctor's see the symptoms they can't diagnose the concussion. So several days later I was diagnosed with a concussion. I still deal with post concussion syndrome 5 years later. I had to relearn how to get dressed. It doesn't sound like yours is that bad. But the headache, dizziness and lightheadedness are all symptoms.

Go research and find the best neurologist in your area with expertise in brain injuries. That is where you need to go for help! And even if it isn't considered a concussion (which I doubt), a neurologist is best for headache management.

If I got hit in the head why do I have chest pain?

Your neck is attached to the spine so a hit on the head can cause more problems for your spine, especially if the muscles were a little relaxed at the time. When the back muscles are tight they often send the pain around your body on the nerves to be pains in the chest area. To get rid of the pain you have to free up your back muscles to release the pressure on the nerves and here's how to free them up:
Back:
(do while sitting)
Place your left hand on your left leg next to your body. Place your right hand over your left shoulder, fingers over the back and the palm in the front and firmly pull down on them and hold. After 30 seconds slowly lower your body forward and to the outside of your left leg, keeping your left arm fairly straight as you do. When you reach your lap remain there for another 10 seconds, release the pressure but rest there for another 30 seconds. Then reverse your hand positions and do your right side.
Even if you aren't feeling it at this point your neck muscles still took a pounding and it would be best to free them up as well to prevent problems in the future. Here's how to free them up if you choose to do so:
Neck Release:
Place your hands behind your head touching your fingers. Press into the back of your neck with them and hold the pressure on them. After 45 seconds slowly lower your head until your neck is fully extended. Release the pressure but hold your head there for another 30 seconds. For both-for best results relax your body first by taking a deep breath and exhaling then remain this relaxed.

Can I go to sleep after I hit my head?

Many things depend on what you hit your head on, how hard did you hit your head, did you loose consciousness, do your pupils dilate and the list continues. If you hit your head hard enough, you lost consciousness, your pupils don't dilate properly or any other symptom that is out of the ordinary then you need to go directly to the hospital or a doctor as you may have brain damage and you will need treatment. DO NOT take asprin or Tylonel or any other meds as this may make matters worse. If you hit your head hard enough and you have a headache or a goose egg you should still go and get checked out, just to be on the safe side, things can go from good to bad in no time with head injuries. You should use an ice pack on your head to reduce swelling and pain but even if this reduces the pain still go to get checked out.If you feel ok after you have hit your head and forget about it but then begin to vomit or feel nauseous go to the doctor or hospital right away as this is a sign of a concussion. If you just hit you head but didn't see stars or have any of the above symptoms you are likely ok to go to sleep. If you are at all worried have someone wake you up every 4 hours and if they can't wake you then call an ambulance and get you to a hospital right away.
